Heavy Metal: The All-Aluminum HTC One Comes to AT&T; and Sprint

Watch out, iPhone 5: HTC is shedding its plastic polycarbonate shells in favor of a sleek, all-aluminum "zero-gap" metal unibody with easy-to-hold tapered edges. HTC One, which launched in February, will be available April 19 on AT&T and Sprint for $200 (32GB) and $300 (64GB, AT&T only) with a two-year contract. Preorders on AT&T begin April 4 and on Sprint April 5.

In terms of industrial design and internal specs, HTC has come a long way since its last effort. While the similarities between the HTC One and Apple's metal-clad iPhone 5 are hard to ignore, perhaps that likeness will position HTC ahead of the other much-anticipated Android, the Samsung Galaxy S4 which opens up to preorders on AT&T starting April 16.

Behind the HTC One's 4.7-inch display is a quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, which packs a 1.7 GHz punch (the iPhone clocks in at about 1.3 GHz). The phone needs all that processing power to fuel what HTC is calling the "UltraPixel Camera." The rear-facing camera has sensors that reportedly take in 300 percent more light than traditional smartphones.

HTC built its own in-house Vine, a video app called Zoe that captures three-second snippets and uploads them to a "motion gallery." The short videos are called "Zoes," and HTC's network integrates these snippets with photos and full-fledged video from the same event to create "highlight films." Mobile media editors can set these films to different themes and music, then share their movie memories via social networks or email.
