Well, I sort of can — with the Twittering Mad Men characters.

The Tweeters are unrelated to the actors from the show, but are considered "brand ambassadors" and Twitter their retro moves — after a slight dust-up worthy of a Mad Men episode, that is (AMC briefly shut them down, but with a "gentle nudge" from their web marketing department, let them resume).

People like Don Draper and Peggy Olson are Twittering, so get on it — their musings might be in the next Mad Men Tech Quiz!

What Do You Do When a Site Goes Down?

I know sites need their "down time" just like anything else, but don't you find it infuriating when you need to get on Bloglines to check your RSS feeds or you want to see what your friend are up to thanks to Twitter and you can't? As soon as I hit refresh and realize the site is either down due to a flood of traffic or for maintenance, I get a feeling of panic and keep hitting refresh over and over. Thankfully the Internet is full of distractions, so I can usually divert my ADD on something else until the site is back up. What about you? How do you cope with website "down time"?

Keep refreshing the page until it's back up.

Just move on and forget about it.

Email a complaint to the website.

If you haven't heard yet, a 5.4 magnitude earthquake hit Los Angeles yesterday. How did I find out? Twitter of course! Not only can Twitter inform you of what your pals are doing and help you resolve customer service issues, but it can now be a source for news and getting you the deets before it can hit the wire!The Twitter Blog is reporting that updates about yesterday's quake began coming in a whole nine minutes before it was reported on the AP news outlet, making Twitter the place to hear news first. With millions of members around the globe, and the ability to Tweet from your mobile device, I'm really not surprised! Do you Twitter newsy events, or are you strictly a social Twitterer? Source

Twitter: when it can be used for good, it's great, and when it can be used for evil, well, it's diabolical. Consider these Twitter videos, which document a (please God, make her fictional) Twitter addict (actually YouTube star LisaNova) twittering, tweeting, and being a general twit about everything she does. It's one thing for her to be addicted to her tweeted actions, but does she really think we are?

When All Else Fails — Twitter It!

Happen to be on JetBlue Flight 647 Sunday night, service from JFK to SFO? Two of our Coutorture staffers were — for five and a half hours. No, not airborne; they were stuck on the tarmac. So what did the ladies do after hunger pains ensued and they realized the plane (which by that time had run out of fuel and filled both waste tanks) wasn't going anywhere? They decided to do what any other tech-savvy gal would do and turned to the social networking service Twitter and started twittering up a storm to JetBlue, who actually responded with jokes, support, and tips for getting on another flight.

News.com reported yesterday that tech-savvy Barack Obama has the third-most followers on Twitter (well, the Obama camp anyway) — with almost 32,000! I keep reminding myself to remember to follow more Twitterers and "tweet" more, but I feel like I either don't have enough time or, maybe I just haven't been bitten by the Twitter bug that gives people the urge to microblog their every move and/or follow the every reported move of fellow twits (heh)! But that doesn't mean I don't like Twitter — I do, in fact, I'm continually impressed with every news story that reports how Twitter kept media and help updated with disasters, like the recent earthquake in China. In any case, I have to know if I'm in the slow lane on this one: Do you twitter (or tweet)?

I'm still familiarizing myself with Twitter, but for avid users, there's a site called Tweet Scan that acts as a search engine for all things related to Twitter. I came across Tweet Scan on Make Use Of and couldn't wrap my head around the fact that a Twitter search engine is a useful tool. . . but it really is! Wondering what's happening in the Presidential race? Or who got booted on American Idol? Tweet Scan has got you covered!

I sometimes start rambling about cool tips and tricks for Twitter, forgetting that I haven't really explained what the heck Twitter is — (OK mom, this one's for you!). Basically, Twitter is based around one question and one question only — what are you doing? This free social messaging utility allows you to stay connected in real-time with friends, family and co-workers via quick, frequent updates.

I can keep rambling on about how to use it, or you can watch this. . . A brilliant short video that explains it in a nutshell. But then again, it's really so simple that a nutshell is all you need it to be explained in. . . OK, OK, just watch and see what I mean! Also, let me know if you are a "Twitterer" below and what you like about it.

It's day 16 of 2008, and for those of you who have getting fit on your list of New Year's resolutions, tweetwhatyoueat helps you maintain your goal by tracking your eating habits and calorie intake. After all, if you're going to be sitting in front of a computer like me, you might as well utilize that nonexercise time!

Keep in mind that you do have to log in with Twitter, which if you haven't signed up yet for reminders, get on it! Once you are signed in, type "follow twye" in your status box and click "update," which will take you to your food diary. During the day, you direct message Twitter from your cell phone, IM, or computer, with your meals and snacks, and it updates your food diary to track your calorie intake. The food diary is private, so your Twitter friends won't be privy to what goes down the hatch!

I love my online to-do lists and receiving text message reminders on my cell phone with Oh Don't Forget, so when I learned that Twitter has a new reminder service, I jumped right on board. With Twitter timer you can get a direct message sent to you at anytime to remind you to do something. Featured on Lifehacker, all Twitter users can get regular "tweet" reminders sent to their inbox or cell phone. I no longer have excuses for working through meetings and coffee dates.
