Colorful DS Bundles Available on Black Friday

I know I don't need an excuse to buy a new Nintendo DS, but if you don't have one yet (side note: Why?), then Black Friday is the perfect time to dive in. Starting November 28, you can pick up a DS in one of two new colors: Mario Red and Ice Blue. This is great news since the majority of you like your gadgets with a little hue on them. But the best part isn't just the new shades. Just like we saw last year, these hot new handhelds are being bundled with two of my favorite games to get you started — Super Mario Bros, and Brain Age.

The bundles will set you back $150 bucks, but the price is totally right for a limited edition color. I'm getting up early to snatch one up as a Christmas gift, although I'm not sure yet who will be the lucky recipient. But really, who wouldn't love a new DS? And if they don't, then it's more DS action for me. Merry Christmas, indeed.

Nov. 21 is the official birthday of the Nintendo DS! And after only four years, it's seen its little sisters, the DS Lite and the recently-announced DSi, come into the world as well.

In that four years, I can hardly imagine not having my beloved DS. In traveling and general lounging around with it in my hands (not being able to put it down), it's become indispensable and close to my heart. So happy b-day, Nintendo DS!

Wii Music: Don't Call It Rock Band

After I got my party on with Raving Rabbids and had my fill with the Personal Trainer Chef Edition, it was time to rock out with the Wii!

Wii Music (coming out Oct. 20), is Nintendo's answer to Rock Band, but is only similar to it in the sense that you're standing-up and interactively making music. Elements of competition are removed, and replaced with the ability and encouragement to play songs any way you want.

Using the Wiimote and Nunchuk controls, you can choose among a ton of instruments like piano, violin, guitar and the cat and dog (you read that correctly), and then play with your friends to make stylized versions of classic songs. The music is a bit more midi-sounding than Rock Band or Guitar Hero, the avatars just Miis, and all the songs super family-friendly, which makes Wii Music a really great option if you want to expose kids to a music game, but aren't that comfortable with the graphics and songs that the other games provide.

Pink on My Gadgets Isn't Always a Bad Thing

I have a love-hate relationship with the color pink, especially on my gadgets. I like sporting the color on occasion, but I don't like how tech manufacturers think that women only like their gadgets glossed in the feminine hue. Thankfully, I can totally get behind the pink ribbon movement that supports breast cancer research, and subsequently use it as an excuse to buy another DS. What? It's to fight cancer!

For a limited time, Nintendo is rolling out a Pink Ribbon DS Lite that supports cancer research and awareness. For each Pink Ribbon DS that's purchased, Nintendo will donate $5.00 to the Susan G. Komen For The Cure research fund, with a whopping $100,000 minimum promised. If there's any reason to go out and splurge on a new DS for yourself or the women in your life, I'm thinking this is your shot! You can get your own on Amazon and in stores on October 19.

My Nintendo DS knows the contours of my thumbs very well — why shouldn't it know the contours of my face? In late November, when Project Beauty launches, it will. Project Beauty, the result of a collaboration between Shiseido and Nintendo DS, is a DS game that will recognize your face from a scan, and will then make beauty product recommendations for you (probably Shiseido products).

Wouldn't it be great if you could get cell-phone apps like this, too? It would certainly make your morning a little easier, even if it's just to tell you, yes, you do look toe-up today.

New Mario and Zelda Games Hitting the Wii

If you've been wondering what's next for the Wii after conquering Super Mario Galaxy and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, then wonder no more. The E3 Summit kicked off this week, and the President of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, revealed yesterday at a press event that new titles for both Mario and Zelda are in the works.

Iwata admitted there is a dire need for quality games like Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii, which I have to totally agree with, since the sub-par mass of third party games and movie tie-ins are getting a bit old. Although he didn't reveal any other info, I'm totally stoked already! Bring on more Mario!

If so, Blik has just introduced Nintendo wall decals, inspired by vintage games, which can make your lair just that much gamier. For some crazy reason I've been craving a good Super Mario Brothers 3 games session! I haven't played since I had to sell my NES to get my hands on a N64, so instead of just downloading the game onto my Wii's Virtual Console, I've been spending a bit more time than usual on eBay searching for an old system and copy of the game (what can I say, I'm nostalgic) to whisk me back to simpler times. Since me and the plump plumber have had a long-standing relationship, I wanted to see how many of you heart the little Italian man and all the trouble he gets into. Wii Fit Fitness Journal: Week Two

I'm absolutely hooked on my Wii Fit, and I'm not ashamed to say it. Although I have yet to get a kick-butt aerobic workout like I do at my gym during cardio kickboxing, I'm finding myself to be more flexible than ever — plus, I think I even stand up straighter! My dominant workouts this week were yoga (I can't believe how much I'm loving it) and running. Taking on the Island Run for the first time was really fun, since I got to check out the lay of the virtual land (which is pretty sweet, by the way).

Plus, once you're finished with your jaunt that's worth 10 minutes in your Wii Fit Bank, you'll surely need that sweat towel (especially if you use my tip from last week to hold full water bottles or weights in your hands while you're running)!

So far, me and the Wii Fit are good pals. He knows how to make me laugh, how to sweat, and shows me what I'm made of — we're a good pair. This week, although a few days short of a full seven days of dissecting WF, it was a good one. I can tell from the soreness in my hips and abs that the time put into perfecting my Hula Hooping skills is paying off. Additionally, I've found that my endless tree and warrior poses are indeed helping my flexibility! Who knew that in the first week I could feel this many results off of a game.

At first, I thought that I may get bored with the same games every day, but thankfully, every ten minutes you put in on the Wii Fit, opens up a new activity. And every time you repeat an activity, a new difficulty level challenges you for a better, longer, or harder workout. Last night I ran the moderate trail on my run and actually broke a bit of a sweat! No kidding! I guess it's a rite of passage that you freak out before your wedding — whether it's over the flower arrangements, the cake, or your body. Although you should never stoop to crash dieting (I know Fit would tell you the same), it may actually help you to chill out by playing a video game. Bonus, if those games are interactive and get your blood pumping, you might just lose a few pounds while you're at it and tip the scales in your favor.

Don't hate me, but I've had my Wii since they first hit the shelves back in 2006. I know, I know, some people are still scouring through weekly Target ads, obsessively clicking refresh on Amazon, and getting up at the crack of dawn to wait outside a game store just on the off chance they might get one in stock. Mario Kart Wii Review: Another First Place Finish

I don't have to tell you that I'm a big time Nintendo fan, what with my DS always in tow, and all my Super Mario Bros paraphernalia that litters my bookshelves . . . oh, well, you probably haven't seen that, have you? Anyway, yesterday afternoon, the Nintendo stork dropped a sweet little box on my desk, and I didn't even have time to tell you since I literally "raced" home (get it — raced?) and started playing my copy of Mario Kart Wii! Yes, racing fans, I got the scoop on one of the hottest games to hit the shelves this Spring, and I just had to test it right away. Who wouldn't? As you might be able to tell, I was totally stoked to get the chance to play MKW early, since there is a special place in my heart for racers. But seriously, Mario Kart Wii is just as fun as you'd imagined.

When I first opened the box, the first thing I noticed was that the Wii Wheel was smaller than I expected, but still fits nicely into your hands. It might even fit into your eight year old's hands, if you'd let them have a turn, that is! But unfortunately, the pack only comes with one wheel, so you should keep an eye out for additional ones so you can play nicely with others. After popping in the disk, inserting my Wiimote into the wheel, and doing a little Mario jig, I was ready to race. Diane Sawyer Wii Skiing: A Must See

Looks like the lovely get fit and have fun Wii Fit will be making its way to store shelves sooner than its expected May 19 release and here's to hoping I can kiss my gym membership goodbye! Said to be priced at $90, (Wii Balance Board included), the Wii Fit may just be your ticket to that summer beach bod you've desperately been trying to achieve — well maybe not. After watching Diane Sawyer and the rest of the Good Morning America crew take the Wii Fit for a test drive, I don't think I saw a drop of sweat or anything that resembled a serious workout. Watch the vid below and tell me if you think this is going to be a calorie burner or not? I say not so much, but then again, maybe "fake skiing" will do a body good?!

Mario Kart Wii Coming April 27

For those of you waiting oh so impatiently for the Wii edition of Mario Kart, you'll have to hold your breath for only another month. Mario Kart Wii will be hitting shelves on April 27 here in the states, but lucky Japanese Wii fans can get their hands on it a whole two weeks and some odd days earlier. I hope we don't have a repeat of the delayed Super Smash Bros. Brawl release where it gets pushed back at the very last minute! I just don't know if my little heart could stand it.

Thankfully, Mario Kart Wii is coming stocked with the Wii Wheel (cause who would want to drive with the Wiimote? Not me!), although there's already sightings of some pretty impressive third-party steering wheels out there. I am not going to deny the fact that there are a lot of exciting tools on the iPhone, but I must admit, it's announcements like this that make me thank my lucky stars that I have a shiny and new iPhone. Brace yourselves: word on the net is that there is a new Nintendo Entertainment System emulator application on Google Code that comes with games like Super Mario Bros and The Legend of Zelda. The emulator has a few glitches and requires several software hacks to work so use it at your own risk. Forewarning: The games don't have sound and they run really slow. A replica of the Nintendo DS Lite, this Nintendo DM Lite even features the token A, B, X, Y and D-Pads, but sadly does not include the new camera and Face Training game add on or Nintendo Wi-Fi connection. Nintendo's Wii Strap Gets Safety Upgrade

Time to put those handcuffs away because Nintendo World Report has just announced that the Wii strap will be getting a much-needed locking clip to replace the existing loose clip. Millions of Wii straps were recalled this year after reports of shattered TV screens and injuries, so locking clips will be put to good use to prevent further Wiimote flying incidences. No word as to whether or not the new Wiimotes will include these clips or if you need to purchase them separately. My advice is to invest in one if your Wiimote has a tendency to slip off your wrist during intense games of boxing!

Upcoming Nintendo DS Game: Dr. Phil In Your Pocket?

Those of us who suffered pangs of jealously when we heard young people in Japan are using their Nintendo DS Lite's as personal trainers, drinking guides and therapists/life coaches might finally be able to rest easy.

Nintendo has announced they hope to expand the gaming market to non-gamers while video game publisher Ubisoft has announced their intention to release a series of games they're calling "Games for Everyone." What are these games you wonder? The main game comes from the "Petz" series, where you care for virtual pets. Also on the list is a game called "My Coach," which according to Switched is heavily influenced by the Nicole Kidman-backed Brain Training series. That series will include a game called "My Life Coach," which is described as "your own personal Dr. Phil." Details are still vague but it sounds a lot like the life coach games being released in Japan.

Not Everyone's Convinced About Wii Fit

I get it. I get it. Not everyone is as excited about exergaming or the newly announced Wii Fit board as FitSugar and me. The folks over at Scarcastic Gamer have put together a charmingly smug video poking fun of the Wii Fit board for being "a little white thing you stand on." To quote the voiceover's best line: "For far too long video game consoles have limited themselves to being fun and entertaining, but with Wii Fit the skies the limit as you explore new exercises like leaning side to side...Standing in place has never been more fun." Touché.

Get Your Wii While You Can!

The geek world has shifted its gaze from the iPhone to video games and consoles this week with the E3 conference and the announcements of cool new games like Wii Fit, which hopes to capitalize on the cardio gaming craze as well as the popularity of the Wii. Released in December 2006, the Wii had people standing in line, buying it off eBay and Craigslist and inciting general hysteria with gamers. While the fervor has calmed down, some people still haven't gotten their fingers on it and word is, it could get worse.

The New York Times reported that Nintendo expects that the Wii console will continue to be in short supply, while Sony said it is already seeing increased sales of its PlayStation 3 after announcing a price cut Monday. Reggie Fils-Aime, who is the president of Nintendo of America, said Wii has not only been a success in terms of sales, but in Wii households one in eight men over 50 regularly use the console. He said that was a first in video-game history.

All I know is, if you want one, you better get it before the holiday rush. No one wants to get caught in that.

Nintendo DS Now With Camera and 'Face Training'

The Nintendo DS has been making a lot of news this past month. First, Japanese game maker Konami, who also happens to be the maker of the ever popular Dance Dance Revolution game, announced a new skin software program that turns your DS into a beauty guide, next Nintendo announced actress Nicole Kidman as the new face of their "More Brain Training from Dr Kawashima: How Old Is Your Brain?" game, and lastly, the love of all things DS was celebrated in the form of a delicious Jello DS Lite Cake. So what's next?

Apparently, the company has moved on from training our brains to training our faces with the release of Otona No DS Kao Training, or Face Training, a set up which includes a camera that plugs into the Game Boy Advance slot on the Nintendo DS and records your face as you play the game. According to Wired, the idea is what the Japanese call "facening," or facial exercises. They hope that by doing certain facial exercises, you can make your skin more elastic and in turn have a prettier face. Sure, there's absolutely no scientific proof, but it sure is entertaining. (The woman in the picture at right seems to be stretching her cheeks in order to make them more flushed.)

Face Training ships on August 2 for 4800 yen or about $38.97 USD.

OMG! I Got An iPhone!

Okay, so I don't have an iPhone yet, but the promise of getting one later this week and the fact that people are already starting to line up at Apple stores got me thinking about the pure, unadulterated joy I felt as a kid when I got a new toy, gadget or tutu. Can iPhone-obsessed adults ever top the infamous kid who got a Nintendo 64 for Christmas? You know, the one who freaked out on home video circa 1996? Well, that kid is all grown up and when I asked my friends how he might react to getting an iPhone, they all jumped at the chance to pay tribute to him. OMG! OMG! OMG! Watch it.

Nicole Kidman Crowned New DS Spokeswoman

Who says Oscar winning actresses can't be gamers? Nintendo has picked Nicole Kidman to lead a print and television ad campaign for "More Brain Training from Dr Kawashima: How Old Is Your Brain?" The game launches across Europe on the Nintendo DS on June 29, which just happens to be the iPhone release date in the US. According to Nintendo, Kidman was chosen by Nintendo because of her universal appeal to mainstream audiences of all ages and backgrounds, as well as her reputation for being intelligent, entertaining and genuine. As you can see from the video, Nicole's "brain" seems to be much older than her real age.

Kidman is quoted as saying: "I love the concept that Nintendo is reaching out to new audiences with their self improvement products like Brain Training. Most importantly, I’ve quickly found that training my brain is a great way to keep my mind feeling young." What does Nintendo have to say about the move?
