Do You Prefer a Physical or a Touchscreen Keyboard?

When a new smartphone comes out, one of the first things I look for is whether it has a touchscreen keyboard or a physical keyboard. When T-Mobile's G1 came out, I was mildly surprised that it was physical, rather than onscreen, because I thought it may be closer in design to the iPhone.Not to be outdone, it looks like Android will devise an onscreen keyboard for the G1 as well, leaving you with both options to type. Nice compromise!In the meantime, tell me which one you prefer, since I know that becoming accustomed to the physical keys of a phone like the BlackBerry deterred a lot of people from the iPhone because of its touchscreen. What do you like to type on?

I think I could see these keyboard cuff links on the wrists of a geeky guy that I love. Etsy user BeaG makes these cuff links from old keyboard keys for $9 a pair, but I might like them more if you could choose the initials that the cuff links come in. But cuff links are pretty formal, and keyboard keys may not be the black-tie impression he wants to make. Then again, they're kind of charming, especially as a Valentine's Day present. Would you buy these for your guy?

I'm always amazed at how well kids these days know their way around a computer (oh man, just typing that makes me feel old, but it's true). Thankfully Crayola is catching up with the times by incorporating a new line of tech products for kids, which are bright, durable, and totally kid-friendly. Discussed on engadget, these new products include a $50 Crayola EZ Grip digital camera which comes with a 1.3-inch screen, a Crayola Type n Learn, a color-coded USB keyboard for $30, an EZ Click mouse for $15 and a $10 EZ Frame mouse pad which can also be used as a picture frame. The only product available right now is the camera, but the rest will be here before Christmas.

Earlier this month Apple redesigned their keyboard along with the new iMacs and given the fact that our keyboards are dirty cesspools at this point we decided it was time we upgraded and gave the new models a spin. The new keyboards are made of sculpted aluminum and come in wired and unwired (it uses Bluetooth) models. On both models the keys are set much closer to the actual board than the older version, which both minimizes sound and allows less spring for your fingers. They also have function keys for one-touch access to features such as screen brightness, volume, eject, play/pause, fast-forward and rewind, Expose, and Dashboard.

Most keyboards choose function over bells and whistles, but the Luxeed keyboard from Korea is all about a little extra pizazz. The white backlit model retails for approximately $127 and can light up in unique color combinations. A more simple black backlit version features black keys with letters and characters keys that change color. It is possible to be too geeky, or live on the borderline between geek chic, moderately geeky and "OMG, why would they do that?" geeky. I suspect Kasey McMahon, who created this Text-O-Possum, a Bluetooth enabled, laser projected keyboard built in to the back leg of an opossum, is part of that last group. "An amazing glimpse of this promised future has just arrived in the form of text-o-possum," says McMahon on her website. "A direction technology based on an optical recognition mechanism enables the user to tap on the key images projected from text-o-possum's back leg." Listen McMahon, taxidermy and geekiness don't mix. Even when you mix it with a laser keyboard.

Trying to keep your keyboard free of dust balls, spills, and crumbs is practically impossible. I've already provided some tips on how to clean your keyboard and deal with keyboard spills. However, if you don't want to be bothered with spot-cleaning your keyboard, Sonnet has created a silicone keyboard cover for Apple keyboards and Apple wireless keyboards that is thin and flexible enough to type on. These covers, which I spotted on Gadgetress, will help to repel the dust and prevent any spill damage. Once the cover needs to be cleaned, all you have to do is wash them with some soap and water. Priced at $20. I think I'd use one to cover my keyboard with when I'm not around, but I don't think I'd like the feel of it when I'm typing.

Dishwasher Safe Keyboards

Considering your computer keyboard harbors more germs than a toilet seat, how do you keep your keyboard spotless? I don't know about you, but my keys are covered with remnants of all sorts of things - lunch, tea, cookie crumbs... you name it, it's on there. Usually what I do is give it a quick wipe or take the compressed air can to it and this will do the trick. According to NPR a company called Seal Shield is advertising $50 keyboards which they claim are dishwasher safe. Although companies like Microsoft and Logitech dis-approve with this method, when blogger Scott Moschella put his keyboard in the dishwasher, it surprisingly still worked (after a week of being air dried) and came out clean as a whistle. After short-circuiting a keyboard with only a few tablespoons of water, I say Moschella was just lucky. So if you really want to get wet n' wild with your keyboard, I suggest purchasing one of the Seal Shield keyboards.

Yet again, another excellent fashion meets function gadget! Apart of the larger Me-mo line, a system line based around one gadget central master unit, Peter Norberg has created the chic leather QWERTY keyboard.
The master unit of the Me-mo line allows the user to attach things like a camera, this super tiny QWERTY keyboard, GPS and MP3 players. They work by snapping onto the master unit with jacket buttons. That's right, you can connect anything to the unit with extra buttons. If this Me-mo unit actually works, it might be kinda cool to give it a try.

I might be taking it a little far with the geeky jewelry, but if people really want me to wear my heart on my sleeve I have to admit, I think these keyboard earrings, $7.50, are pretty cute. How To Clean Your Keyboard

While cleaning your computer keyboards is largely instinctual, some of us — namely me! — forget to do it often enough and things can get very dirty. If your keyboard is in need of a thorough cleaning, all you need is three minutes, a little finesse, and some around-the-office supplies.

I've found the best options for cleaning your keyboard are a lint free cloth, Q-tips, cleaning fluid (isopropyl alcohol) or dust buster spray and clear tape. To start your cleaning process, shut down your computer and remove the main plug, unplug the keyboard, and hold it upside down to release any large dust and food clumps that have been caught in keys (pressing the keys is a good way to release it). If you have a can of compressed air blow out any junk from around and under the keys; if not, you can use a little vacuum to clean it out. I opt for using Q-tips with a couple of drops of cleaner on them to take off the soda spills.
