Dream Cooking Scenario: A Computer in the Kitchen

My skills in the kitchen tend to fluctuate from the very elementary to the occasionally sophisticated (case in point: a beautiful soufflé that shall never be reproduced). What makes the biggest difference for me is having instructions, and not everything I want to make is in the Joy of Cooking.

I get most of my recipe ideas from food blogs like YumSugar, and my best solution for using a recipe I found online was printing it out and getting it covered with ingredients in my messy kitchen, or keeping my laptop somewhere safe and traveling to it for the next step. But when I saw this Kitchn reader's solution, a mounted computer that the reader's husband scored on the cheap, I swooned. And wish I'd thought of it first.

Imagine, having all the recipes you've saved on the Internet in one place - right where you need it.

Spice Things Up With Rubik's Cube Salt and Pepper Shakers

I thought I had seen the pièce de réstistance in Rubik's Cube products when I found that vintage Rubik's Cube Perpetual Calendar the other day, but now I don't know, because check this out: the Rubik's Cruet Salt and Pepper Shaker Set!

$20 for each shaker, the salt has a solid white block top, while the pepper has a red block top.

Unlike the calendar, you don't have to solve the cube to figure out how to get your seasonings out. And although I would appreciate the challenge if it did, I can get pretty irate when I'm hungry, so not having to solve a puzzle is a probably a good thing for me.

Locavore App Tells You What's in Season Where You Are

To be a locavore is to eat foods that are both in season and produced where you are. For those who are attempting this lifestyle, it can be a challenge to find a lot of these foods.

That's why the Locavore app ($3) is awesome - it uses the GPS in your iPhone to locate you, and then it tells you what foods are in season locally.

And that's not all - the app also tells you what's coming into season soon, where the closest farmers markets are, and it has links to the Wikipedia pages of the fruits and veggies it comes up with, in case you're not familiar with some weird-sounding leafy green.

Special Delivery: An Early Look at the Nintendo DSi

As you know, I've been anxiously waiting for the arrival of the Nintendo DSi (which comes out this Sunday), but lo and behold, I got a special delivery in the office yesterday: a Nintendo DSi cake and the DSi itself! After taking in the craftsmanship of the cake, I dove into the DSi to take a few first impressions.

Right off the top? The DSi's looks haven't changed much from its predecessor - it is a bit lighter, but definitely feels more rugged with its matte finish. As expected, the dual screens have a richer color, and the two cameras (one facing you and one facing outward) take some pretty impressive photos for being just 0.3-megapixels. Actually, some of the funnest features of the camera come with the distortion and customization tools you can play around with, like turning your face into a kaleidoscope. It reminds me a lot of Photo Booth that comes standard with a Mac, and who knows how many hours I've spent playing around with that!

Although I wasn't able to test out the DSi Shop or buy any games with my 1000 free Shop points (it goes live April 5), I had no problem picking up Sugar HQ's WiFi signal, which is a good sign for online play and downloading. I'm kinda in love with the DSi's music feature. Not only does it play back your own music (which almost makes the DSi the only portable entertainment system you'll need), but you can record short sound clips of your own as well. And just like the camera, you can distort the clips - run them backwards, forwards, and even drag your stylus to change the tone.

Overall, the DSi brings the fun of the DS Lite, but with more bells, whistles, and things to play around with when you aren't involved in a game. Stay tuned for a full review of the DSi next week when I can open up the DSi Shop, and really take this baby for a test drive!

It's March 14, and any good geek knows what that means: It's Pi Day!

Yep, 3/14 corresponds to the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter (3.1415926535. . .).

Have you ever wanted to combine your two passions: Cooking and Star Wars?!

Well, don't worry, you can, with the Star Wars Cookbook: Wookie Cookies ($15)! Each recipe in the cookbook is themed to the series in some way, like Crazy Cantina Chili, Boba Fett-Uccine, or C-3PO Pancakes, which sound amazing enough, but how insane will everyone go at your next party when you whip out a tray of Wookie Cookies?

Edible Geek: How to Make Pixel Cookies

Nope, I'm still not over geek-inspired baked goods; are you? Nope? Good!

Instructables has posted a fabulous tutorial on how to make pixel cookies. I like the idea of committing to baking cookies rather than a labor-intensive cake, as amazing as those results may be (ahem, Kindle Cake!)

Did I say less labor intensive? Well, these cookies do involve the use of a Play-Doh extruder, which I don't exactly have lying around (though Instructables suggests Target). Still, these geeky cookies would make a nice and tasty surprise for a party. Or a Thursday night.
