I have never loved an inanimate object more than I love the polished white West Elm Parsons Desk with Drawers ($299, reduced from $329). For months, I literally scoured Craigslist every day until I got a bargain on a lightly used one. Unfortunately, I moved across country a few years ago and couldn't take it with me.

Used to be (well, still is), you had a desk and you just figured out how to plug your electronic life into it, particularly laptop cords and such. Nowadays you can get furniture that's built for such modern uses, like Pottery Barn's Beadboard Space Saving Desk ($500), which features a five-plug outlet in the cabinet.
It's like having a charging station built in to your desk, and the drawers slide both ways, so there's no jerry-rigging necessary to get your tech organized on it.

My lecture hall days may be over, but I'm still loving the industrial schoolhouse aesthetic of this office styled by Canadian magazine editor, stylist, and decorator Margot Austin. From the galvanized metal file cabinet to the linen grain sack pillow, every item seems to have a history. The black/metal desk and sunburst mirrors are a bit more contemporary, which keeps the room from looking too much like a dusty old library.

There's no fighting it — back to school time is here. I've already shown you ways to stylishly carry your laptop, ways to make your studying environment more ergonomic, and which gadgets to toss in your new Fall bag, so here's a simple and cheap way to keep your dorm nice and neat.
From Ikea (one of my favorite places to shop, by the way), this PS Laptop Workstation ($60) allows you to get your term paper written without having to use your bed as a work station, and keeps all your desk essentials in one compact space.

Madrid-based ninetonine furniture makers cater to modern kid. Its fun, versatile designs are created from sustainable sources, using certified nontoxic lacquers. The latest addition to its line — the Deskhouse — is a drool-worthy centerpiece that can serve as a double-sided drafting table, complete with a chimney for crayon and marker storage or a playhouse.

While there's something charming and nostalgic about an old-school desk chair, it's about time it had a modern makeover. The ROSSIN L@p Chair (inquire for price) by German-based Design Ballendat is the second coming of the school desk chair. But, instead of a hefty compartment to store pencils and paperwork, and a writing surface, you can set your notebook computer on its curved arm and call on your hard drive for storage.

While I do think the Crate & Barrel Sloane Leaning Desk I recently showed you is ideal for small spaces like studios, another option is a wall-mounted desk, which frees up floor space. I'm salivating over this MASH Studios LAX Wall-Mounted Desk ($720), in particular. Its English walnut frame is luxurious but relaxed at the same time.

Back in the days of my clunky Macintosh 128K, a light and slender desk like the Crate & Barrel Sloane Leaning Desk ($99, reduced from $199) would simply not fly. But, seeing as so many of us are equipped with oh-so petite MacBooks these days, it's an ideal desk for a home office — especially if you live in a studio. Granted, with only two fixed shelves, it offers little in the way of storage.

Hi CasaSugar,
My boyfriend and I are moving into a small one bedroom, but luckily the living room is quite spacious. As children of the digital age, we always have our laptops out for work or school. Is there some sort of space-saving desk that allows for two workstations at a time?

I just came across this image from the portfolio of interior designer and style consultant Karina Garrick. I'm completely smitten with how she has matched the color of this desk and pair of table lamps to that of the wainscoting. It's completely unexpected and refreshing, especially for a space that is otherwise very traditional in style.
