A WHO Report Says Cell Phone Use Leads to Brain Tumors

Cell phone use causing cancer - certainly not something we haven't heard before and not something that is going away anytime soon. First we learn that the electromagnetic radiation from cell phones doesn't cause cancer and when I asked you if you were worried about your cell phone increasing your risk of getting cancer, most of you said no.

The latest news? Well it doesn't get more legit than the World Health Organization, who have been working on a ten-year investigation called Interphone to see if there were any correlations between prolonged cell phone use and brain tumors. According to CNN the study will be published by the end of the year, and did reveal that those who had cell phones for 10 years or longer had the strongest risk of tumors.

And another recent study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology supports the link between cell phone use and tumors as well. The CNN article states:

Studies that looked at people who had used cell phones 10 years or longer tended to find the strongest risk of tumors. Researchers found that cell phone users had a 10 percent to 30 percent higher risk than people who barely, if ever, used this technology.

They also touch on Bluetooth devices, which aren't as harmful, but could cause tumors if worn on your ear all day. I don't know about you, but whenever I know I'm going to have a long cell phone conversation, I make sure to pop in my ear piece (not a Bluetooth) so that my phone isn't glued to my head for a couple of hours.

I use my phone calculator to figure out my gas mileage every time I fill up. I reset the trip odometer when I fill up and I just divide that number by the amount of gas I put in to see if I got decent mileage on that certain tank of gas. I know, it's kind of anal, but it's just something I do.

This past week was a busy one with cell phone chatter, as we learned about three new phones that will be making their way to store shelves very soon. For instance, the new and improved BlackBerry Storm2 has just gone on sale in Verizon stores across the US and will cost $180 on a two-year contract after a $100 mail-in rebate. Meanwhile, the fashionable Palm Pixi, which costs $99, will be coming to Sprint stores on Nov. 15. And last but not least, the beautiful BlackBerry Bold 9700, which doesn't have a release date just yet, but is rumored to be hitting T-Mobile and AT&T networks this November. With all this talk about smartphones, I'm interested in knowing whether or not one of these handsets has made it to your wish list or if there's one in particular you can't wait to see in person? Studies Have Confirmed: Sugar, Models, and Clowns

I read a story last week about the small (and shrinking) population of US residents that don't have a cell phone - which included my fellow blogger and friend, Gregory Han, from Unplggd. Although a portion of this group do not have the means to own one, a majority of this population has made a conscious decision to ditch the phone by their own accord. It reminded me of a friend that recently gave up his cell along with his Facebook and Twitter accounts in an attempt to clear his mind and simplify his life.

Although some folks see technology as an extra added complication to an already busy daily grind, I use tech to my advantage, and it actually helps streamline my day. From using my iPhone apps to help me navigate the roads, to using 3G and wireless technology to log in and get work done from anywhere. For me, tech allows me to go more places, and stay in touch with family and friends I wouldn't otherwise talk to on a regular basis. This got me wondering - would you give up and live without your tech on a permanent basis?
