Sex and the City Movie Tech: Miranda and Her BB

We're in the homestretch now of our Sex and the City Movie premiere, and I can honestly say, Christmas came early this year! We've already jogged our memories on tech from past seasons, and last week we learned about some of the gadget gear from the movie! So Samantha has an iPhone, Louise (Carrie's assistant, played by Jennifer Hudson) uses a Sidekick, and Carrie likes to mix it up between cell phones and pay phones.

And what about Miranda you ask? You'll find her with a BlackBerry 8700, which is kinda odd, considering there have been at least three new models out since they started filming!

Did Britney Downgrade Her Cell?

A lot has happened in the last couple of months for Ms. Britney Spears, but it feels like yesterday when she was in, out, back in, and out, and for the last time back in and finally out of rehab.. sporting her blonde bob wig and toting her BlackBerry 8700. Now she has been spotted with an LG vx9900, which is a clear downgrade from the BlackBerry. Call me a CrackBerry addict or BlackBerry biased, but I can't seem to comprehend what Britney is doing with a phone that was popular circa 2006 cell phone? Did she wear out the keypad on her BlackBerry in rehab? Was getting rid of the CrackBerry part of the 12 step process? What do you think?

Geeks We Love: Boy Genius of The Boy Genius Report

Day two of our Geeks We Love Valentine's series showcases someone who is certainly no stranger in the tech world (OK, well maybe he is somewhat of a stranger). You see, he is so "in the know" when it comes to industry info related to all things tech, that he runs a website under an assumed identity, Boy Genius. Boy Genius created The Boy Genius Report after becoming a crowd favorite within the circles of online mobile communities. His website is like a secret society for geeks. . . full of exclusives, tid-bits and "swirling new rumors." He was first to catch a glimpse of the Valentine's Day promo poster from AT&T, was first on the scene to reveal the BlackBerry 8xxx from RIM, and on December 25, his "music industry spy," Just Blaze (shown below), found out that Apple would be announcing a new laptop at MacWorld. Although we're wracking our brains trying to figure out who this person is, you can't help but love a person who is just - that good! Keep reading to find out more about this mystery man!

GS: I'd love to know how The Boy Genius Report all got started:
BG: It was something I did for fun. I had some great contacts who would send me devices and phones long before anyone had even heard of them, and as soon as I saw people's reactions, I knew I had to start sharing this. Engadget gave me a great avenue and it got so popular that I had to start something that I had complete control over.

GS: Of all the gadget/tech blogs I read on a daily basis, The Boy Genius Report seems to have the most "insider info" than anyone else (especially when it comes to cell phones). What is your secret and where do you get all your insider tips from?!
BG: A lot of our sources are close friends of ours who trust us with the information they give us, and that goes a long way when you're in something for the long term and are all about building relationships. Everyone is passionate about what we're doing, and hey, what's better than dropping some serious scoops?! You always got to keep corporate on their toes!

GS: I get the impression that there are a bajillion cell phones lying around the BG Headquarters. How many phones do you have and what are your ultimate favorites?
BG: Way too many to count, honestly. Probably over two hundred phones and devices. Ultimate favorites would be the Motorola Vader v8160, iPhone, and BlackBerry (all of them).

GS: You seem to get some serious blinged-out gadgets sent to you. What are some luxury gadgets you own, and what ones are on your wish list?
BG: Lets see. . . a solid white gold BlackBerry 8700g, an iPhone with white diamonds around the bezel, a Siemens SK65 with white gold back cover, and a Vertu Constellation. If I had to pick something, it would have to be Just Blaze's diamond PS3 controller, except I want an Xbox 360 one. That would be crazy! White diamonds, white gold, and blue sapphires!

GS: What would you say was your biggest story of all time? Rumored and/or true?
BG: There's way too many! We could throw in the Jay-Z + Apple record label scoop, the BlackBerry Curve, the BlackBerry 9000, basically every Motorola phone for the past year, a whole number of HTC devices, etc.

New Blackberry 8800 Is Thinner Than Ever

AT&T introduced the thinnest BlackBerry handset yet last week and I have to say, it was about time. The BlackBerry 8800 incorporates a full QWERTY keyboard, and all the functions of the beloved 8700 Blackberry, which Jennifer Aniston is a huge fan of. AT&T will be the first wireless carrier in North America to launch the BlackBerry 8800 and will begin offering it across its wireless retail and business channels on February 21.

The BlackBerry 8800 has a premium, dark blue finish and Push To Talk on the handset. It features a built-in Global Positioning System, a new trackball navigation system for fast and intuitive navigation, as well as a media player and a microSD expandable memory slot for storage of music and videos. Lauren Conrad Takes Her BlackBerry Everywhere

We all know that Lauren Conrad, better yet known as LC on Laguna Beach and the Hills, is a cell phone junkie- c'mon, when isn't she glued to her phone?! In Laguna it was the LG clam cell and now in the Hills she has upgraded to the BlackBerry 8700. Just like her Kabbalah bracelet, her BlackBerry has become a staple accessory in her wardrobe! Whether it be at PR events, clubbing with Heidi or attending star-studded events with Audrina, Lauren is always carrying her phone. As long as she's not texting or calling Jason, I think I'm ok with it.

Match The Celeb With The Cell Phone

I spy with my little eye a celeb with a pretty bling shirt, a bad polish job and a lovely BlackBerry 8700 (which just so happens to match her outfit)! This one is kinda tough, especially since you can't see her infamous hair. Here's a hint: Prince recently mocked her singing ability at Las Vegas' Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino. Any idea who it is? iPhone Review: Forget The Phoney Talk

Yes, we attended the iPhone launch at the Apple Store in downtown San Francisco and a neighboring AT&T store. No, we did not buy one on launch day. At the time, waiting for the crowd to die down seemed like a good idea (two days spent interviewing the people in line turned out to be a real energy blaster). A few days later, I succumbed and joined the 40 percent of you that said you would be buying the iPhone this year and ordered it from the nearby AT&T store. While I half expected it to make my dinner and wash my hair, I am honestly more impressed with it than I am disappointed. Here is part one of a series of reviews I will be doing on the gadget of the moment.

Touchscreen: The rave reviews about the iPhone's multi-touch screen are all true. As soon as I began navigating my way around the menu and web browser, my finger effortlessly tapped its way through the screens. With two fingers I could shrink and expand web pages, as well as move the page around with one finger to zoom in on a particular spot. Even typing letters for messages and pressing numbers on the dial pad turned out to be easy.

Browser Speed/Edge Network: When connecting to the internet with the iPhone, I noticed that using a WiFi connection is much faster than using the EDGE network. Even when I couldn't pick up a wireless connection, using EDGE wasn't that painful - despite what all the critics say.

Smudging: Either I have really greasy fingers or the iPhone's new screen is super shiny because after a few minutes of playing, the screen was covered with finger-prints and smudge marks. I'm guessing that the large 3.5-inch screen only contributes to the appearance of smudges. But then again, the screen on my BlackBerry Pearl is covered as well and I hardly touch that. My advice is to get yourself a soft screen cloth so you can keep your iPhone's screen looking brand new. My second piece of advice is to quit worrying about smudges because you won't be able to avoid them.

Blackberry Comparison: I'm a dedicated Blackberry Pearl user so I've been a little squeamish about the idea of a transition. Overall, my Pearl is much smaller and lighter than the Apple iPhone (the Pearl is 89 grams while the iPhone is a noticeably heavier 4.8 grams), but the iPhone's widescreen makes it much nicer for web browsing and watching videos, which was near impossible on the Pearl or my older 8700. In terms of loading time, the Blackberry and iPhone run on the same EDGE network and don't seem to have any obvious speed differences. The issue for me lies in the fact that the iPhone's e-mail is updated every 15 minutes, which is too infrequent for my liking. Conclusion: I like the iPhone, but that doesn't mean I'm dumping my Pearl.

iPod: When I first heard the iPhone would be controlled via a touchscreen and feature an iPod I was a bit baffled and wondered what it would be like to use an iPod without a traditional click wheel. I found there's no major difference, and the iPhone's touchscreen is so uber sensitive that it's a joy to play with the phone's iPod features. Of course, the iPhone does not have a click wheel and is controlled instead by an intuitive bar.

Complaints: I've found the iPhone's e-mail to be less than revolutionary. It does not update often enough for my "on the go" personality (it updates every 15 minutes) and I'm so used to my BlackBerry's reliability in that department that it's hard to compare. Of course, I'll have to use it for a few weeks to really get the hang of it.

First Naomi Now Foxy: Girls Going Wild With Their Cell Phones!

Maybe I didn't get the memo about new cell phone features, but what is with all these celebrities using their BlackBerries as weapons?! First Naomi Campbell was charged with assaulting her maid with her BlackBerry over a pair of missing jeans. And now Foxy Brown allegedly hit her neighbor across the head with her BlackBerry during an argument.

According to tmz, the victim suffered from a swollen eye and lip and nearly lost some teeth from the incident. A police report was filed and Foxy, who is currently on probation, turned herself in. She is set to be back in court on September 26th.

Are Gucci handbags not cutting it anymore for catfights? Is the rough-and tough hard plastic BlackBerry 8700 the way to go? The next time someone whips out their BB, I suggest erring on the side of caution! I'm going to.
