This makes me a little less bitter at United for charging $15 per checked bag: the airline is installing iPod and iPhone docks on its airplanes. Not only will you be able to charge your battery at your seat, you'll be able to scroll through your music and videos from the seat back's screen! Don't watch from that silly little screen, watch from behind somebody's head!

Suddenly those gross, germy, blankets are the least of air travelers worries. The FAA is answering to Congress today over whistle-blower information surfaced casting doubt over Southwest Airlines safety practices.
The tip came from an FAA inspector who called out his bosses saying, "I'm here today because I'm concerned of the safety of the flying public which has been jeopardized by the abusive authority in violations of the federally regulations."

Ahh, the challenge of racking up enough miles to actually use them for a free ticket. Business travelers and those who frequently fly via the same carrier can stock up for award travel, but did you know that many major airlines have expiration dates following a period of "non-activity" (usually between 18 and 24 months)?
If you want to still make use of those miles, you can purchase the remainder to get a free upgrade or trip in batches of 1,000 miles.

You've done your homework on plane fares, but, when seeing the cost begin to climb, panic and purchase. Two hours later, the price is back down again even lower than before. I feel your pain, but don't slam your keyboard and give up.

This summer, airline passengers in the UK will be screened with face recognition technology, instead of being checked out by passport officials. The hope is that widespread use of the technology will improve security and speed up travel time.
So how will it work?

I'm about to take a mini-vacay, and I can say that I'm very happy that I don't have to do what these women in this '60s United ad had to do: ask the ol' hubby to "take me along." And just like children, the little ladies get a discount! All that's missing from this commercial is for these wives (dressed like toddlers but dancing like the Rockettes) to suck on lollipops and play with teddy bears.

For most of us — the most that wouldn't have hundreds of dollars to spare, won't take multiple trips a season or don't own a private jet — the price of air travel with pets can prohibit inclusion of furry friends in all but the most important of situations (like relocation). If you're wondering how much it will cost to include a pet on your next trip, I've gathered up the prices for the major airlines. How much will you pay as you go?

Canadian musician Dave Carroll has spent the past year trying to convince United to compensate him for the $1,200 in repairs his guitar needed after being tossed around by baggage handlers. His trip from Halifax and Nebraska included a transfer in Chicago, where the damage occurred. Carroll has ruled out accidental cause because another passenger witnessed the guitar abuse and spoke out in alarm while it was happening — he even notified the United employees on-board, who were anything but helpful.

There's nothing worse than being crammed in the middle seat of the last row in coach right next to the bathroom. Just thinking about that makes me tense. The Wall Street Journal delivered bad news about those already smushed seats — they're being pushed even closer together!

Purchasing your plane ticket gets the biggest traveling expense out of the way, but that total doesn't include anything you'd want to tack on to make your trip a happier experience. The Baltimore Sun gathered fee facts from domestic airlines and broke down charges for everything from beverages to pets.
- Beverages: Monster Energy drinks - $3 (Southwest Airlines); VitaminWater drinks - free (AirTran); $3 (Delta Air Lines); Beer, wine and alcoholic cocktails - $4 (Southwest Airlines); $5 (Delta, United, US Airways, American Airlines) $6 (AirTran Airways)
- Meals: Snack boxes and sandwiches range from $3-$8 (Delta, United, US Airways, American); Continental Airlines is the sole major U.S.
