Next week, IBM will be introducing their first ever "Virtual Mirror" kiosk at the National Retail Federation in NYC. What it does is take a digital photo (of the shopper) and scan in various makeup and hair coloring products that they may be interested in purchasing. Without having to actually try the makeup on you are guaranteed true colors and an accurate replica of your face.

We don't need surveys to tell us that Americans have cut back significantly on spending, but there are plenty of sources if anyone's looking for proof. A new survey by IBM found that more people have been shopping at a variety of stores to find the best deals, and shoppers are focusing on quality and value almost as much as price. Guy Blissett, consumer products leader for IBM Institute For Business Value, commented, "I think it's a much more sophisticated approach to shopping."

The trendy and hip sunglasses company Ray-Ban is attempting to make the sunglasses shopping experience a bit easier with their new Ray-Ban Virtual Mirror download. Using 3D technology, this cool tool is similar to the IBM Virtual Mirror since it allows you to try on the goods without needing to be in the store. Now there's no guarantee how accurate this new service is, but at least it will let you know if those black Audrey Hepburn glasses are going to look chic or just cover half your face.

This immense grid is actually a test picture on a large-scale, touch-sensitive projection display at the IBM stand at the CeBIT technology trade fair, which is running right now in Hanover, Germany. Inspired by the pleasing simplicity of the grid pattern, I thought I'd find some other grids that are less tech-oriented, starting with this CB2 Grid Pillow ($24.95). Check out my other grid finds below.

Employer-provided napping pods are great and all, but there's one new work perk gaining popularity that would help employees more than providing a place to rest. A handful of large employers including IBM and Pepsi have arranged for their employees to have access to one-on-one counseling sessions with financial planners. Some mid and small size firms are following suit: Even though the benefit is costly for employers, they believe it will help keep their workforces happy by reducing a big stress in their lives.

BusinessWeek compiled its annual list of the best places to launch a career, and this year it includes a total of 119 employers.

My parents' neighbor is this glamorous book editor that has a collection of vintage typewriters on display next to her front door. I don't know if it's her Chanel scarves or mysterious glasses, but she's always embodied that mod and worldly artist persona for me and the typewriters (which I am dying for to her to sell at a garage sale some day) are just as marvelous. That being said: I want a typewriter keyboard for my computer!
