Stars Shimmer On The MTV VMA Red Carpet

New York was the place to be last night as the stars attended the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards at Radio City Music Hall! Russell Brand was asked back to host the awards for the second year in a row, and looked comfy in a cardigan as he posed for cameras before the show. A few of the ladies looked stunning in shimmering shades of silver and gold last night, including Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Leighton Meester, Jennifer Lopez and Kristin Cavallari. Alexa Chung looked gorgeous in her mini dress, while Beyonce Knowles wowed in bright red. NY Fashion Week is going on in the city at the moment, and Shakira and Pink had the ultimate fashion faux pas when they both showed up in the same dress. Eek! Twilight's Taylor Lautner, Adam Brody and Chace Crawford looked handsome in their classic suits, while Russell's buddy Diddy looked sharp in his, accompanied by two ladies!

Who Wore It Better? Treesje Black Patent Bag

A couple weeks ago, we spotted a Treesje Black Patent Bag on Lauren Conrad. Not that it's difficult to see a big black shiny bag! Singer Amerie, who is currently on tour in the UK, was recently seen with the same bag while leaving a restaurant. I dig the purse a lot, so to me it looks gorgeous on both ladies. If I had to pick, I'd say Amerie only because her outfit is a more fun and put together. Who do you think wore it better?

Geeks Of The Week: Amerie And Kelly Rowland

Yesterday I gave the parking attendant near work my business card so I could get on the list to get a parking space (yes, San Francisco is that crowded) and he looked at me and said "geeksugar? You can't be geeksugar, you look like a movie star." In his defense, I was wearing giant sunglasses and he's one of those really sweet old men. In my defense, geek is chic people. My evidence? R&B superstar Amerie recently confessed she is hooked on The Sims. She is quoted in Contact Music as saying: "I am addicted to The Sims. I live out a virtual life online. I think it's seriously cool, but I guess it's kind of dorky. I've got Kelly Rowland into it too, and now we hook up in the game. Beyonce tried to join us, but she wasn't into it. Also I love to read science magazines. It's not very R&B I know." I say anyone who can rock the mic and stage like these two need not worry. Chic indeed.

New Law Dramatically Increases National Volunteer Program

President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act today, which could quadruple the size of AmeriCorps over the next eight years. The president was joined by the $5.7 billion bill's namesake (Ted Kennedy) and former president Bill Clinton, who started the nationwide volunteer program in 1993.

The new law creates four new service programs: the Clean Energy Corps, the Education Corps, the Healthy Futures Corps, and the Veterans Service Corps. It also increases the amount of money volunteers receive toward their educations. And seniors who participate can transfer $1,000 toward the education of a family member.

Supporters hope that having volunteers work on crucial projects will rejuvenate the country and perhaps save us money. According to one study, each dollar invested in AmeriCorps yields a $4 return. Sounds like a good investment to me!

YouthBuild Celebrates 30th Anniversary on the National Mall

Today on the National Mall, YouthBuild AmeriCorps young leaders from across the country framed an energy-efficient, affordable home before it will be sent to Brownsville, TX, for a family whose home was damaged by Hurricane Dolly. The home will serve as a model for 84 additional green homes being developed in a rural Colonias neighborhood by the Community Development Corporation of Brownsville.

First Lady Michelle Obama stopped by to plant a seedling inside a rooftop gardening box while touring the YouthBuild AmericCorps energy-efficient home construction project, located in a tent adjacent to the homebuilding, the tent featured learning activities focused on green building, energy responsibility, and environmental awareness, which are all part of YouthBuild's programs throughout the United States. All of these National Mall activities are in celebration of the volunteer organization's 30th anniversary

YouthBuild is a youth and community development program that strives to address issues facing low-income communities, including housing, education, employment, crime prevention, and leadership development. In YouthBuild programs, low-income young people ages 16-24 work toward their GEDs or high school diplomas, learn job skills and serve their communities by building affordable housing.

As an AmeriCorps volunteer myself, I know the value in serving communities through volunteer work. The two years I spent in AmeriCorps were incredibly rewarding, and the fruits of my labor can still be seen in the communities where I worked, in the form of gardens and building projects. Congress Considers Bill to Spur Volunteerism

The House of Representatives will vote on the Give Act today, which would triple the size of AmeriCorps and create four other service programs. The new Corps would be:

The Clean Energy Corps
The Education Corps
The Healthy Futures Corps
The Veterans Service Crops

The bill also increases the amount of money volunteers, like the ones Michelle Obama hung out with yesterday, receive toward education.

Supporters of the bill say that America's service infrastructure needs a critical boost. Plus, if we can get volunteers to focus energy toward crucial projects, it might save money. According to some analysis each dollar invested in AmeriCorp yields a $4 return.

But critics say it would just throw money at the idea of giving back. And jobless Americans already seem excited about the idea of giving back and gaining skills.

Ask Savvy: When Should I Start Looking For a New Job?

Dear Savvy,

I am currently serving a one-year term as an AmeriCorps VISTA and it is coming to a close in August. I'm wondering if it's too early to start looking for a new job, or if I should start applying to positions now. Your advice will be much appreciated.

A bigger question is really when you're available to interview for jobs. Whether you intend on living in the same city after your VISTA service is complete or plan on moving away, you need to be realistic about taking time away from your current commitment to attend interviews. If you can't find time during weekdays or aren't able to take off any days to travel to an interview, then you might wait until you're a little closer to wrapping up your current position to start applying for jobs. What's the point in applying if you can't interview?

Like I said, timing a job hunt is nearly impossible. It's a slow market these days, and while most companies and organizations like to see that you can start immediately, hiring during the Summer typically lags more than usual. Polish your resume and draft cover letters for various types of positions that you come across while you're perusing job boards. You want to familiarize yourself with the current job market and be able to hit the ground running when that perfect position arises.
