Crystal-Studded Laptop Covers: Totally Geeky or Geek Chic?

I can't help but get a bit of satisfaction and pleasure from personalizing my gadgets — especially with fun new decals and chic new cases. So when PartySugar gave me a glittery-gold sticker to put on the back of my cell phone (it was the first initial of my name), I absolutely loved it. The sticker has since worn off (call it overuse of the phone if you will), but I'm always on the look out for sparkly new accessories to jazz up my gadgets. Aside from the usual blinged-out, cellphone cases at CES this year, I also came across (ahem . . . was blinded by) these crystal-covered laptop stickers. I can't say I'd want to go all out and slap one of these on my laptop, but I'm curious to know if any of you would?! What do you think? Too geeky or somewhat geek chic?

Cell Phones Protected by Crystals and Glitter

I knew I had my fill of pink gadgets when I was cruising around CES a couple of weeks ago, but who knew I'd see so many bedazzled cell phone cases!

The following cases are a far cry from Case-Mate's diamond encrusted iPhone case, but they are inexpensive and fit on a variety of cell phone models. Some are covered with glitter while others, like the BlackBerry Pearl case, have crystals surrounding the screen area. I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a case that's a little less flashy. . . Although if I had to pick a favorite, this one would definitely be it. Have a peek at the ones below and tell me which one appeals to you the most!

Battle Seasonal Affective Disorder With Golla Gadget Bags

I'm looking for signs of Spring anywhere I can get it, and when I saw these laptop and cell phone bags from Finnish company Golla at CES, I knew they would seriously stave off my winter doldrums. So bright and cheery — Wouldn't you agree that the lower pattern looks very much like another Finnish company Marimekko, no?

I have liked what Golla has brought to the table in the past, and these prints continue to be pretty and stylish without being too girly, which is exactly the balance I like to see. Now all they need to do is make a pretty floral one for the MacBook Air, and I'll be all set! Check out more styles below!

The Bang & Olufsen Samsung Serenata

High tech signature design company Bang & Olufsen has teamed up with Samsung to create this elegant yet simple cell phone, the Serenata.

Both companies worked together to create a phone that people would want to keep—a unique phone that is both timeless in design and technology. Hence the name Serene, which reflects
the core concepts of elegant simplicity and refined minimalism.

The Serenata incorporates a 240 x 240 touchscreen display, bluetooth, a loud dual speaker, a USB port and a SRS/WOW equalizer for exceptional sound output. It also comes with a matching docking station that can be used as a mini-laptop when the phone is turned 180 degrees. I saw it in person and I have to say it's like nothing else I've ever seen before. Pricing is said to be around $1600.

Traditional tripods are usually large, hard to carry and aren't that great to look at. Thankfully companies like Versa are coming out with small, flexible tripods that are great for hands-free photo shoots. I've seen similar models like this design including the all terrain tripod, but I've never seen such a bright color selection before! Would you ever consider using one of these tripods for your camera? Or are they over-the-top geeky?

CES 2008: Hands On Philips Active Crystal Devices

Last week at CES I got the chance to check out some of the Active Crystal USB Memory Keys from Philips and Swarovski. These Active Crystal flash drives are as luxurious in person as they appear to be on the product site. Made from polished stainless steel and silver shade crystals set in ceralun, this USB device comes disguised in a lovely lock. It also includes 1GB of storage (roughly storing 250 songs or 1000 photos) and is password protected. Both the heart and the lock cost $178 each.

I've always wanted to try-out Built's laptop cases — You know the company behind the funky and flexible lunch bag totes? Well at CES, I got a sneak-peek of Built's latest addition to their laptop tote collection, the lightweight backpack. This ultra-slim bag fits right against your back and can be used to transport your laptop and other items as the shoulder strap includes an easy-access compartment. The backpacks are set to go on sale this April, will be available in medium and large sizes, and cost $80 each. I'm not really digging this zebra style print although I could see myself using the black one. Is it too geeky or do you think it's geek chic?

Would You Want a Motorized TV Under Your Bed?

I don't know why I'm so fascinated with luxury gadgets. It's probably because they are usually intricate, flashy, and I can never afford them. I was hoping to see more luxury electronics at CES this year, but I did manage to come across this bad boy—The K2 Mounts under the bed lift. As you'll see in the video below, it's a custom lift that raises your flatscreen out from under the bed to an ideal viewing height. And it can be all yours for around $17,000. It seems like a rather large contraption to me (and somewhat dangerous), I'd rather settle for a bed that comes with the flatscreen built in! What do you think?

Are You a Fan of Sony's Rolly?

Sony decided to rock out at CES this year with their entertaining Rolly display. These egg-shaped digital robotic music players were out in full force, flashing their lights, and flapping their wings to the beat of Christina Aguilera's "Ain't No Other Man." Each egg "dances" to the beat of the sounds coming out of the side speakers, as songs can be downloaded from computers or played via bluetooth. The Rolly includes 1GB of memory and still has yet to hit store shelves in the US. I can't say I personally need or want one, but you can't help but be mesmerized by their moves. CES 2008: Learn How to Play and Read Music With Piano Wizard

So maybe you don't really learn how to play an actual guitar when playing Guitar Hero, but I did come across a game at CES that will teach you how to play the piano. Piano Wizard is a neat video game that can teach anyone how to play the piano and read music. A four-step, color-coded method paired with a stimulating video game is said to be easy enough for a 3-year-old and challenging enough for an experienced musician. The Piano Wizard can be used on both Mac and PCs.

Having the chance to finally check out Samsung's sleek Giorgio Armani phone during CES was an experience in itself. I loved its haptic feedback user interface which causes an immediate slight vibration whenever an icon is touched. This is used to indicate that the phone has accepted your input—a unique yet useful feature which is also found on LG's Voyager.
The fashionable Armani phone also includes tri-band 900/1800/1900 GSM, a 3-megapixel camera, a 2.6-inch LCD touchscreen, bluetooth, a full internet browser, and support for AAC/MP3 or WMA audio and MPEG-4 video. The Giorgio Armani-Samsung phone is available in selected mobile phone stores in the U.S. and Giorgio Armani boutiques in major European countries.

While making my way through the crowds at CES, I couldn't help but examine this table-top Star Wars gizmo from Nikko. At first glance, I assumed it was just a plain Millennium Falcon replica. But with the press of the after burner button, the entire backside slid out into a full remote control. Buttons on the remote can be used to control the R2-D2 projector, the DVD player, a CD player, and an iPod. You can also snap the Falcon onto the display stand and push the sound button to see the cockpit and afterburner light-up with real sound effects. Probably the perfect device for die-hard Star Wars fans. What are your thoughts on it?

We just had to take a break from scoping out all the awesome gadgets, huge LED monitors and OLED Micro Display Headsets from CES in Las Vegas and give you a look at what is sure to be a talked about (if not laughed at) item in the gaming industry: Air Guitar Rocker! Play some of the same tracks that you know and love from Guitar Hero, minus the guitar, TV or even a console. PSP Phone Home! Skype Coming to PSP

The DS may be my portable gaming device of choice, but I can't help but sit up and take notice of the PSP lately. At this year's CES, announcements came of Skype teaming up with Sony, allowing you to make free calls to any of the other 246 million Skype members over the PSP's wifi connectivity.

The free calling goodness will be limited to the Slim PSP though, which means the rest of us will have to fork over the requisite $170 to get in on the action. Thankfully, Skype offers some redeeming qualities like text messaging, video messaging, even conference calls! This kind of news might make the PSP a must have gadget for me in the future. Games, movies and a phone — all in one? What else could a geek want?

Neon Telephones: Totally Geeky or Geek Chic?

The great thing about CES, is the fact that you can be checking out a 108-in. plasma TV one minute and then be taking pictures of pink and purple neon telephones the next. Aside from the bright neon lights, these telephones are definitely geeksugar retro-gadget worthy. And with the lights, well . . . I'll let you draw your own conclusions. Some may think these are over-the-top old school and geeky, while others will automatically say geek chic. What are your thoughts?

CES 2008: Nokia Goes Green With Car Tech

Nokia certainly went green at CES this year by introducing the attractive 3110 Evolve, a handset made from 50 percent renewable biomaterials. About the size of a candy bar, the Evolve uses 95 percent less power than required by Energy Star standards. Nokia also came out in full force with a green and white hybrid car filled with green gadgets. The rear passenger seats came equipped with N810 Internet Tablets, while the front was decked out in a green GPS navigational system and fun bluetooth technology. Stay tuned for more product info.

CES 2008: In Awe of eMagin's OLED Microdisplay Headset

Before you start laughing, I'll admit that eMagin's SVGA 3DS OLED-XL microdisplay headsets aren't particularly sexy, but who needs glamorous gear when you've got extraordinary pieces of technology right before your eyes?! With this microdisplay you get both analog- and digital-signal process in a tiny compact display, therefore eliminating the need for an external television screen.
When I tested out the OLED microdisplay, it was connected to a Dreamaz Indicube personal media player, which allowed me to watch videos on a virtual screen size equivalent to 52 incheds by 2 meters! A great invention for those who would like to experience their videos from their iPod on a larger (portable) screen in complete privacy. The company plans to start shipping headsets in March.

Just when I thought I wouldn't run into anyone I know at CES, guess who appears in front of my eyes on the big screen? My girl Beyoncé! So maybe she wasn't really there, but seeing her on Panasonic's gorgeous 108-inch TV on Blu-ray, made me feel like I was watching a live concert. Beyoncé's tour DVD was played using Panasonic's new DMP-BD30 Blu-ray disc player, which offers advanced high definition technology, exceptional visual detail and not to mention, stellar audio.

All I gotta say is try privacy scarfing this bad boy! Gizmodo was first on the scene to capture this ginormous LED curved monitor by Alienware at CES. With a screen resolution of 2880 x 990 and a supersized DLP display, I can't help but assume this massive ~~television~~, I mean monitor, is going to cause some serious eye damage. The Alienware curved monitor is reportedly going to be available later this year. No word on pricing just yet.

SlingPlayer on the BlackBerry to Be Showcased at CES

After hearing a few months back that SlingPlayer Mobile was working with RIM to develop a BlackBerry, I have been anxiously awaiting a release date.

Sling Media has finally confirmed that they will be releasing SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry later this year. They have also announced that they will be unveiling their software running on a BlackBerry Pearl 8120 during CES next week.

Wondering why this is such a big deal? Just like Slingmedia from your laptop, with the SlingPlayer Mobile software, you'll be able to watch your home TV on a number of mobile phone platforms including Windows Mobile, Palm OS, and Symbian OS. And it won't require a monthly fee or other recurring charges, you'll just need to purchase a SlingPlayer Mobile for a one-time charge of $29.99. How great is that?!

Eyecandy Sound Lounge & Bar Provides the Full Geek Experience

I am so glad I discovered this fantastic new bar on Bornrich, considering I'll be heading to Vegas next week for CES! The Eyecandy Sound Lounge and Bar, located in the center of Mandalay Bay’s casino floor, is exactly that —100 percent eyecandy.

Opened in October 2007, Eyecandy features interactive touch tables that allow guests to create visuals and messages as well as project images onto screens above the dance floor. These tables also include stationary and motorized cameras to check out the action elsewhere in the lounge and bar area. And if you have a favorite song you want to hear, just plug your iPod into a sound station so the DJ can mix your tunes into the song line-up. This bar puts Twentyfour in London to shame, as Eyecandy's high-tech nightclub experience also boasts a fiber-optic channel running through the bar for a shimmering light effect as well as a LED tiled dance floor—allowing dancers to change images and graphics!
