Last October when I was in Paris, I took time to visit the Jeu de Paume, which featured a major Edward Steichen (1879-1973) exhibition. The museum gathered 150 of his iconic portraits from Greta Garbo to Winston Churchill. Many of the photographs were taken in Steichen's capacity as chief photographer for "Vogue" and "Vanity Fair," in addition to photos that are a visual re-creation of "The Family of Man," his groundbreaking 1955 show at MoMA (NYC).

I've pretty much mastered the great ensemble-of-friends party picture and feel pretty good behind a camera, but I'm no David LaChapelle or anything.
What I would really like to find is someone to give me hand-holding, not-too-intense advice about improving my photography. DIY Photography is that someone!

I'm in a beginning photography class and these are some of my favorite pictures that I've taken so far. All of these pictures were taken with an SLR and we had to process and develop the film ourselves. We then had to make prints ourselves too.

Today's Don't of the day is what I would like to call photography gone wrong. As an adult I encourage you to get photographs of yourself, portraits that is. Even if you don't have children, or a significant other.
