The cost of maintaining a home and appliances is often a major deterrent for those debating whether to rent or purchase a home. The unexpected expense of fixing leaky gutters and broken dishwashers can be budget breaking if it comes at the wrong time of month. Not to mention it's a huge pain.

To keep your washing machine new, every few months fill
the machine with warm water and a pint of vinegar. This
will clean out the hoses and stop clogging.
This works for the dishwasher as well!

"Did you know you can save 700 pounds of carbon dioxide when you air dry your clothes for 6 months out of the year? If you have a lawn, put up a clothesline. If you live without your own yard, you can still reap the benefits of au natural drying.

"Because you’re sexy, you’ve gotten into the habit of switching off your out of use appliances, but did you know that many appliances enter “passive standby” mode when they are turned off (so they can start up quickly when turned back on), and continue to suck energy after you’ve flipped the “off” switch? In fact, as much as 40 percent of the energy used to power appliances is consumed while they are turned off. Unplugging your appliances is a good way to reduce energy waste by as much as 1000 pounds per year, but can be inconvenient.

In Manila, millions of residents now live in a world of mud. Torrential rain over the weekend triggered the worst flooding the Philippines' capital has seen in over four decades, submerging more than 80% of the city, killing at least 246 people and displacing hundreds of thousands more. By Tuesday, the water had receded in many places, but it left behind ruined homes and swept-away neighborhoods, and according to health officials, it disabled the majority of Manila's medical facilities.

Hi,
We're purchasing our first home (we've put an offer on the bank-approved-full-price and been accepted by the seller but since it's a short sale, we're waiting for the bank to respond).
I know this is way too early, but I would LOVE inputs, suggestions on how to 'reno' or 'refresh' the kitchen and bathroom. We're going to be purchasing all new appliances (they don't come with any working ones), painting, putting new carpet on the floor (since their hardwood is in a real sorry state), mowing the lawn and 'cleaning up' the whole exterior that has looked like a fire-hazard jungle, etc.

Saturday, August 29, 2009
The death this week of longtime Democratic Senator Edward M. “Ted” Kennedy means one of two things for the troubled health care reform plan proposed by President Obama: Either the plan has lost one of its most powerful advocates or now its supporters have an emotional rallying point to successfully push for passage. Only time will tell.

And here's what our kitchen looks like now!!
The total cost of my redo was about $20. I spent ~$10 on a 5 gallon bucket of joint compound, and then bought two gallon cans of "oops" paint for $5 each at Home Depot.

Americans are paring down the list of familiar household appliances they say they can't live without, according to a new national survey by the Pew Research Center's Social & Demographic Trends project.
Microwaves, televisions and even home air conditioning don’t seem as necessary as they once did. In fact, we’re beginning to see them as luxuries
In the past decade, the public's luxury-versus-necessity perceptual boundaries had been moving in the other direction - the share of adults who considered a microwave a necessity was just 32% in 1996.
