LOS ANGELES - Guillermo del Toro is directing “The Hobbit” and its sequel, New Line Cinema announced Thursday. The 43-year-old filmmaker will move to New Zealand for four years to make the films back-to-back with executive producer Peter Jackson.
Del Toro wrote and directed “Pan’s Labyrinth,” which earned six Oscar nominations in 2006 and won three awards.

Madonna has vowed never to act again - because she would prefer to establish herself in Hollywood as a filmmaker.
The star has repeatedly tried her hand at acting since launching her singing career in the 1980s, playing lead roles in films such as Desperately Seeking Susan, Dick Tracy and Evita, for which she won a Best Actress Golden Globe in 1997.
But since directing the upcoming comedy Filth and Drama, the 49-year-old insists she has found her calling.

Forest Whitaker will star and direct a Louis Armstrong biopic,the first bigscreen project to be authorized by the legendary musicians estate.
The film is titled after Armstrong’s well known song “What a Wonderful World,” and Ron Bass, is slated to write the original script. Oscar Cohen, executive of the Armstrong estate and the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation will co-exec produce with Bass.

Kiefer Sutherland has traded in his acting ability to direct a music video. Last month he teamed up with the band Lifehouse to shoot their new music video for the song Broken.
It took place in downtown LA in a tunnel.

Rosie O’Donnell is hoping to persuade pal Madonna to direct an episode of hit plastic surgery drama Nip/Tuck, after playing a recurring role on the show.
The actress and TV personality has played lottery winner Dawn Budge on a handful of episodes of Nip/Tuck, since making a naked debut in 2006 - and now she wants her pal to get on the set.
Show regular Kelly Carlson says, “Madonna’s been approached because Rosie is on our show and they’re very good friends.

Well, since it looks like a lot of you have no sense of direction either, i thought i'd share this horrible, embarrassing story about my complete lack of direction....
When alex and I were living in kansas city, our apartment was in an area called 'the plaza', which has about a 5 block radius and is basically a really cute outdoor shopping mall.
WELL, i, who have ABOSLUTELY no sense of direction, enjoyed walking around to all the shops.

Talk about a career leap! Madonna hired her gardener to direct her new documentary about HIV/AIDS orphans in Malawi, which premiered this week at the Tribeca Film Festival.
"Nathan Rissman basically did everything for me," the singer – who produced and narrated the film, I Am Because We Are – told PEOPLE.
