WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sarah Palin's new book reprises familiar claims from the 2008 presidential campaign that haven't become any truer over time. Ignoring substantial parts of her record if not the facts, she depicts herself as a frugal traveler on the taxpayer's dime, a reformer without ties to powerful interests and a politician roguishly indifferent to high ambition.
Palin goes adrift, at times, on more contemporary issues, too.

Conservatives say they pushed Dede Scozzafava out of the House race in New York’s 23rd District a week ago because of her left-of-Republican social views — and not because she is a woman.
But the growing schism between the Republican Party’s ascendant right wing and its shrinking moderate core has clear gender undertones — and Scozzafava’s departure raises fresh questions about the GOP’s ability to recruit, elect and even tolerate the sort of moderate women who used to be part of its ruling mainstream.
While Republicans scored a pair of impressive electoral victories in New Jersey and Virginia with solid support among female voters, the events of the last week offer harbingers of serious trouble ahead with the largest swing voter bloc in the country — women.

Once again this year, President George W. Bush issued a proclamation declaring October to be Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Senator Barack Obama also issued a statement urging Americans to “dedicate ourselves to working on behalf of the thousands of women who suffer in silence” during October.

Republican in NY House race suspends campaign
By VALERIE BAUMAN (AP) – 20 hours ago
ALBANY, N.Y. — Fighting plunging support, Republican Dierdre Scozzafava abruptly suspended her campaign Saturday in the 23rd Congressional District special election that has exposed a rift among national factions of the party.
Campaign spokesman Matt Burns said Scozzafava thinks stepping aside is for the best of the party.

The Calgary Herald gives the humans of New Moon some much needed attention in a new interview.
Sure, New Moon's vampires and werewolves may get all the attention, but it's Bella's gang of high school friends who keep the movie centered in reality. Anna Kendrick, Michael Welch, Justin Chon and Christian Serratos (who play Jessica, Mike, Eric and Angela, respectively) talk about providing the franchise's comic relief and keeping it real as mortals amongst all the supernatural shenanigans.

THE CALIFORNIA FIX
The Golden State isn't worth it
Our high-benefit/high-tax model no longer works, especially compared with low-tax states like Texas.
By William Voegeli
In America's federal system, some states, such as California, offer residents a "package deal" that bundles numerous and ambitious public benefits with the high taxes needed to pay for them. Other states, such as Texas, offer packages combining modest benefits and low taxes.

This goes along with the story that I posted in 4.0 about Meatless Mondays in Baltimore schools
Jon Stewart ended an interview with climate-change contrarian and Super Freakonomics co-author Steven Levitt on Monday night by noting, "I've apparently frightened our audience by suggesting that conservation isn't the only way out of any of the problems of the world. I sincerely apologize."
He added, "And I do also believe that we should just eat vegetables."

it was inferred that Bradley Pitt was now a bigger star and vehicle at the BO than the one and only Tom Cruise? Well: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=inglouriousbasterds.htm Despite the favourable advertising campaign, QT helming it, and Bradley's 'superior BO muscle', it has performed less impressively than "Valkyrie" when 'Tom's waning BO performance', and 'his albatross around its neck' is factored in. I mean, the former star with his 'baggage', loss of fans, respect, and work - still at that - drags any film down, if 'he's lucky enough to get the work, of course, he does have to 'beg for it'.
