Website of the Day: Snooth

The last time we discussed how we felt about new social networks, the overwhelming majority of you said you were sick of them, and I think that's understandable. But hear me out! Snooth is a new social network, but it has a great premise that appeals to a weakness of mine - the wine-loving weakness.

Yes, Snooth is a social network designed around users reviewing and suggesting wines to other users. I entered in ratings right away for 2 Buck Chuck (that's Charles Shaw to you poor people without a nearby Trader Joe's), because that is how I roll. Snooth recognized that was how I would prefer to roll, and duly recommended me a big long list of under $20 bottles!

For that, I can forgive Snooth's social network status. As long as skeezy high school classmates refrain from sending me "how is life?" messages, I am totally set.

Wine RFID Rack: Totally Geeky Or Geek Chic?

The WineM wine rack uses technology to keep your precious collection organized and cool. The colored lights provide some chic ambient lighting while RFID technology, much like the tech used by Japanese vending machines and those amazing Mini Cooper billboards, keeps your bottles in order. The RFID information is attached to each bottle of wine via a small tag so your collection can be stored and accessed from your computer. This is perfect for serious collectors, who might keep their wine stored outside their home, or for anyone that doesn't want to take the time to rummage through their collection while getting ready for a dinner party. Is the idea of putting RFID information on your wine totally geeky, or geek chic?

Would You Buy Booze Online?

Amazon is heading up an online shopping territory not terribly well-traveled - the booze train. Yes, that's right, starting pretty soon, Amazon will start selling wine from its behemoth of a shopping site. No, no Amazon-labeled vintages (I'd love to taste the Kindle varietal) - Amazon will basically be directing its "wine traffic" to Wine.com.

The business of selling booze online is pretty murked up and confusing - requirements of a Wine.com order includes things like requiring signatures that can later be verified online and identification checks upon delivery. It would be nice to send a gift to someone of a hard-to-find wine (don't forget, you can buy them a drink online), but for my personal general wine consumption, I prefer to use the heel-toe express from the corner store.

But would you be interested in this? Just remember, don't drink and blog.

Pac-Man Wine Charms: Totally Geeky or Geek Chic?

Pac-Man updated to drinking age! These handmade Pac-Man Wine Charms use characters from the vintage arcade game to make markers for wine glass stems, which is mucho helpful during a party.

For $12 you get a set of six of these charms, and the ultimate compromise in growing up (or, well, growing older). Old vice, meet new vice.

The New Nintendo DSi LL Is Bigger But Is It Better?

That rumored new DSi, with the larger 4.2-inch screen? It's real, and it's coming to Japan on Nov. 21. Said to be priced around $220 and eventually making its way to Europe in 2010, the DSi LL will be released in dark brown, wine red and natural white and as you can see here, the screen is remarkably bigger than the previous DSi, which had a 3.25-inch screen and the DSi Lite which had a 3-inch screen (the outline shows the size difference). The DSi LL is said to also offer a better better Internet surfing experience. I love how Nintendo is always shaping its products to consumers wants and needs, and I wouldn't be surprised if we see the DSi going even bigger.

I'm finally less shy about pulling my iPhone out when I'm eating dinner somewhere (of course, I do it very discreetly and quickly) - a girl's got things to do, like snapping a pic of the wine to remember one you liked.

But say you don't know what wine you will like, and you're not at a fancy joint where the word "sommelier" has ever been uttered. Or maybe you don't want to ask. Either way, you should check out iSommelier, a $0.99 wine-pairing app.

Just select what you'll be eating, and the app will recommend the varietal that goes best with your meal. Never heard of Malbec? iSommelier also gives you background on the kind of wine, as well as tips like what temperature to serve it.

Cell Phone Camera Tip: Remember the Wine For Later

This is a great use of your cell phone's camera for the holiday season, since many people go out to dinner, parties, and drink wine while out. There have been many times where I tasted a new bottle of wine, decided I loved it, and tried to remember what it was called so I could purchase it later.

I never remember. I blame my bad short-term memory and the actual wine drunk.

So now I have taken to snapping a shot of the wine's label with my iPhone or BlackBerry. Now I never forget my new favorites!
