In case you missed it, President Obama spoke directly to school children last week, asking them to stay in school and study up for the future. I thought the speech was inspiring, but he did kind of diss my beloved video games. Obama asked the youth of America to not "spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with the Xbox." This could be sound advice, except for the fact that there are plenty of brain-challenging games out there to improve your coordination, smarts, and problem-solving skills. Eternity's Child Coming to Wii Ware

Eternity's Child, originally bound for Xbox Live Arcade, has jumped ship and is hitting the Wii for your downloading pleasure sometime later this year. Although Eternity's Child hasn't really been on my radar, I'm totally into the fact that it's fully hand drawn, similar to one of my other faves, Odin Sphere and is an old school side scroller a la Super Mario Bros.

The game revolves around Angel, a winged creature who is trying to find others like him after a breakdown of his dreamlike planet. Pollution has melted the ice caps and floods have wreaked havoc on the population so, natch, an evil bunch is trying to take over and destroy what is left of Angel's home. Even though it doesn't sound all that original, the look of the game more than makes up for the overplayed storyline. Take an early look at the Eternity's Child gallery thanks to Gamespy below.

Summer Is Coming Early With Summer Sports: Paradise Island

I'm going to bet on the fact that if you have a Wii, you love playing Wii Sports. Well the game that has certainly been a hit with everyone from seniors to professionals in the medical field has now got another partner in crime-Summer Sports: Paradise Island! Summer Sports: Paradise Island takes you to a sunny island resort where you can play seven warm weather games including volleyball, lawn darts, croquet, horseshoes and mini golf.

Set for a release in March, I'm super stoked to play some Summer games during this long winter season, as I can almost feel the virtual sun on my face now! Get an early look at the first screenshots of Summer Games: Paradise Island thanks to GameSpy in the gallery below.

Tomb Raider Anniversary For The Wii: Geek Out All Over Again

If you were as big a fan as I was of the original Tomb Raider, and spent hours in front of the TV (or PC) trying to figure out puzzles, flipping switches, and finding keys, this anniversary edition for the Wii will definitely keep you occupied this coming Winter.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary does a great job of reliving the game, but throwing in so much extra content, it seems like a whole new game that you've never played before. Think of it like a good high school friend that you haven't spoken to since graduation and then you meet up at your ten-year reunion. She's the same person, just . . . different. Grown-up perhaps, but much more interesting.

Multilayered puzzles and the addition of minigames make for a more involved experience. Not only are you searching for keys and unlocking seemingly unreachable doors in bigger and grander settings, but you are dodging traps, bobbing, and weaving past rabid animals and of course, facing Jacquline Natlas's thugs. Yeesh! It's enough to make a girl cry out for Calgon.

The only real downside to the game is the controls take some getting used to, especially the camera. There's nothing I hate more than not being able to see when it matters most. More than once I had to start again because I couldn't get the angle right. The battle sequences are a challenge as well. I liked the new target and aim system but it seems the action movements are a little slow on the uptake every so often with the Wii remote. Nothing too irritating, just enough to notice.

Overall this is a great game to spend some time on. The game itself is totally enveloping. You can really feel the difference when Lara is making her way through tight spaces and leaping from ledges in huge catacombs with no floor in sight. The visuals are great, which is no surprise since Tomb Raider always delivered for me when it came to atmosphere and cool things to look at. Additionally, Lara's movements and athletic skills have improved since the 1996 version. Trust me, you'll be glad she's in such great shape when you are trying to figure out how to get from one point to another in some of these levels! Renting is a good option if you don't want to fork over the $40 to own, but If you are lucky enough to know a Tomb Raider fan, this would make an awesome holiday gift. (Hint, Hint! )

Super Mario Galaxy Review: We Aren't in Mushroom Kingdom Anymore!

I was never so happy to see Super Mario Galaxy land on my desk Friday afternoon, knowing that I would have all weekend (and I do mean ALL weekend) to play and bask in the glory that is Super Mario. Not since 2002 in Mario Sunshine, have we met up with the pint-sized powerhouse, and it was good to catch up with an old buddy. Rushing home to get my first taste of one of the most anticipated games all year, I finally settled in for a serious Mario Marathon. After playing for much longer than originally planned, I could fully attest to this game's awesomeness.

Mario has been stealing hearts ever since the original Super Mario Brothers back back in 1985. Prepare to be swept off your feet again ladies because the plumber is back and going farther than ever to save his princess. Super Mario Galaxy begins with Mario on his way to a hot date with Peach for the 100-year Comet Festival. But natch, Bowser comes in and kidnaps Peach, this time taking her and her entire castle into the final frontier. Mario - being the knight in shining armor that he is - goes after her and will stop at nothing to get her back. With the help and direction of Princess Rosalina (love triangle anyone?), Mario will gather the Grand Stars needed in order to run Rosalina's space observatory and get back his Princess. A timeless story indeed.

For starters, Super Mario Galaxy brings back all the nostalgia of Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario Brothers 3, and Super Mario 64, but has reworked them to fit into this cool space-age installment. The music that you know and love are now all dramatically scored to fit in perfectly with each new level. More than once found myself walking away humming to the soundtrack that was stuck in my head, even hours later. The controls are fresh and you know right off that the Wii was made to play this game. The Nunchuck and Wiimote are both used during gameplay, one for directing Mario and the other for collecting weapons, currency, battling foes, and jumping from planet to planet. It may take awhile to master, but thankfully you get some practice maneuvering before jumping into the game. The levels are totally satisfying - you can wander around finding little secrets in each one or just go right through, enjoying the sights while you battle Goombas, Koopas, Piranhas, and some new pests to add to the list.

To say that this is the ultimate, Mario gaming experience is an understatement. It really is at the head of the class in gameplay, controls, graphics, and sound. Obviously, I am a total Mario groupie, having played since I was a little girl while others were playing with Barbies. But even if I wasn't such a superfan, I would be pining for this game anyway. For some, this will be THE game to own for the Wii, for others it will be the final straw to get in line and finally pick up the console. A final word of advice for all you Marioheads out there: Keep your Wiimotes charged, you're going to be playing for a loooong time. You can get your copy online or in stores tomorrow.

Seniors Have Some Swing Batter Batter Wii Fun

The Riderwood retirement community in Silver Spring, Maryland is following in the footsteps of the Sedgebrook retirement home in Chicago, Illinois by hosting Wii game tournaments. A feel good story from Kotaku explained how the residents at Riderwood had a Wii Home Run Derby last week in honor of Barry Bonds record-breaking home run. They even had Doris Terry, a pitcher from the 1940's All-American Girls Baseball League participate in the Derby. Considering 47 percent of all casual game players are 50 or older, and nearly 20 percent are 60 or older, the Wii seems like a fun way for seniors to get some exercise, stimulate their minds, and have a jolly good ol' time!

Would You Play: Bass Fishing Wii?

The best thing about the Nintendo Wii and Wii Sports is the fact they promote unorthodox video gaming movement and exergaming - or as Fergie would say "working on your fitness." The now infamous Wii diet guy used Wii Sports - namely tennis and bowling - to help shed nearly 10 pounds in 6 weeks. So what of other "sporty games" that aren't exactly physical? An upcoming Japanese Bass Fishing Wii game looks like it plans on keeping the cardio out of the game experience - much like real life fishing.

According to the gaming geeks at Kotaku, the game has six stages and takes players to locations like the Grand Canyon. It will allow fishing battles via Nintendo's online service. Is it just me, or does that sound like the most boring Wii game ever?

Giant Plushie Wii-Mote

Don't you just love your Wii so so much?! I mean, do you love it so much you wish you could wrap your arms around your Wii-mote and sleep with it at night? Well those dreams can come true with the giant plushie Wiimote.

Kotaku exposed this 26" tall, 5.5" wide stuffed gadget to the world and I must say, I haven't recovered. It includes all the appropriate controls and can be used to sit on, to sleep with and for wild pillow fights.

This cozy Wii-mote is unfortunately already sold-out, and I can't seem to find it on any other sites, which leads me to believe this crafty creation is homemade and quite possibly hand stitched? Whoever you are and wherever you are, Wii fans want you to make more!

Gaming Is 40 Years Old - Do You Feel Old Yet?

Most of today's Xboxers, wii-meisters, Playstation players and portable video game junkies flip on their consoles and handhelds with little knowledge of the gaming legacy that came before them. This month marks the 40th anniversary of the day Ralph Baer, a German-born inventor who fled to America from fascist Germany, built and played the first home-video game. While I didn't know much about Baer's "Brown Box" before reading Magazine's retrospective, Console Portraits: A 40-Year Pictorial History of Gaming, I can't help but get a little nostalgic for the days of Atari, Nintendo and even Gameboy.

The Wii WeDock Keeps Your Wii Neatly Stowed

You can't deny the fact that the Nintendo Wii is so sleek and oh so sophisticated. Unless you have a Wii WeDock from Brando, you're probably taking away some of its sleek aesthetic appeal by wrapping the cords around the nunchucks between game time. Or maybe your Wii's console, cords, and nunchucks have become a permanent fixture in the center of your family room. Whatever the case may be, you might be interested in this WeDock, which neatly stores two sets of Wiimotes and Nunchucks.
The inside of the WeDock has a springboard so you can easily get your controllers for a quick game of bowling or boxing. Priced at $19, no one will ever know what are in these white boxes, but then again -maybe you want them to!

Oh Me Oh My: Wii Controller Street Art

What a random and super sweet find! Nils, the editor at NibCrom Central couldn't resist posting some fun pics of his sis Kari discovering some unique cross walk street art. This Nintendo Wiimote creation was displayed on a cross walk in Darien, Illinois. Can't help but ask the same questions as Joystiq: "What is the supposed attachment to the cord and where is player one's Wii remote?" Also, did the artist use hundreds of boxes of chalk or permanent spray paint? Love it! Does this mean that hop scotch is now a game of the past?
