Apple's latest and greatest OS X operating system was just released on Friday, and I still have yet to pick up my copy. But one thing I can't wait to get my hands on is the pretty new wallpapers that come with Snow Leopard. Thankfully you can download the new desktop pictures in full resolution for free, so you can update your boring background with something fresh and fun for Fall!

Free iPhone wallpapers are rarely outrageously beautiful, so when I find a collection of them that are, I go nuts with them.
Whereas before my best resource was Poolga, I now have a second option.
TypeNuts also has a reserve of gorgeous, rich, high-res images, and like Poolga, they're totally free.

Two friends, sharing similar passions, yet living thousands of miles apart, decided to create small artistic projects together. The name of their project is Kindred (for their kindred spirit friendship — anyone see Anne of Green Gables?), with the first installment consisting of beautiful artistic wallpapers. The theme of the wallpapers is "Winter: Dreams" and includes five divine wallpapers.

At right is an image from this month's Harper's Bazaar featuring Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi. Beautiful home, beautiful woman, and she appears to know it: She has a portrait of herself above her bed, and to my surprise, a rather glam digital portrait of herself on her computer's desktop, seen here.
I have put photos of myself and other people on my desktop, but I don't think I would like to see a picture of myself gazing sexily at me when I'm using my computer.

Arty iPhone users, if you don't know about Poolga yet, then allow me to introduce you.
Poolga is a website full of totally free iPhone wallpapers, but these aren't boring or generic images, they're edgy-cool pieces of art that happen to fit the aspect ratio of your iPhone's screen so that every time you pick up your phone, you see a radical image.
Even the now-defunct iPhoneky urges you to go Poolga.

The appeal of changing your desktop wallpaper is obvious — it's free, it's easy, and you get a mental refresher every time you look at your computer screen, which is something most of us have to do all day. Sometimes we stick to ones we like for a long time, and sometimes you're in the mood to switch it up, as I am now. Usually I go for a fun design, but today?

I love seeing the offices of design mavens because they inevitably have some fabulous desktop wallpaper on the screen for the photo op, always something that complements the rest of the design of the office.
Case in point: Making it Lovely's Nicole shared her office recently, and my eye gravitated immediately to her Mac and the art on her desktop, the colors of which coordinate with the dominant pinks and reds of her office space.
I too enjoy a pretty, serene wallpaper as the setting for the madness that takes place on top of it; right now I can't seem to shake the Kaiku Marimekko pattern.

Because I'm on a Freaks and Geeks viewing kick, I dug these up for the loyal fans — and if you know F&G, you're a diehard — who are more geeky than freaky. There's 30 fabulous free Freaks and Geeks desktop wallpapers to choose from; I plan on rotating them according to my moods, like say, when I get picked last for dodgeball.
Oh, seeing their shiny faces makes me feel like they never went off the air and are instead living some awesome fictional life, where Lindsay Weir went with her math instincts and represented with an adult-geek-girl job, and Bill Haverchuck became my BFF.
