Do You Pay to Subscribe to Any Websites?

There are so many reasons I like reading the news on the Internet - it's free, it's up to-the-minute, and it's convenient. I don't even bother with sites that have a paid subscription service to view their content online, because I can usually get that news somewhere else. Sometimes I'm even too lazy to register to view a site.

I was shocked to read that Rupert Murdoch announced that the Wall Street Journal is going to remain a mainly subscription-only site. Many online newspapers (like the New York Times) have stopped the practice. It just feels like this is not the general direction that the Internet is heading, and that they're dragging their feet.

But it makes me curious - do any of you pay to subscribe to websites?

Can Email Ever Be Replaced?

I'll admit, I'm guilty of notifying friends and family of what's happening in my life via Twitter and Facebook, instead of taking the time to send an email. And it seems a lot of friends are doing the same thing - a personalized email from a good friend is becoming more and more of a special treat.

Not surprisingly, the Wall Street Journal is boldly saying that email is on its way out. Their justification:

In its place, a new generation of services is starting to take hold-services like Twitter and Facebook and countless others vying for a piece of the new world. And just as email did more than a decade ago, this shift promises to profoundly rewrite the way we communicate-in ways we can only begin to imagine.

The article cites constant streams of information in real-time, gathered via services like Twitter, Facebook, and Google Wave, is starting to replace email. It also asserts that email was better the way we used to use the Internet - logging on and checking it from time to time. What do you think? Do you ever see real-time updates replacing email?

Steve Jobs Health Update

On the same day the iPhone 3G S debuted in Apple and AT&T stores across the country, the The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple's CEO Steve Jobs received a liver transplant two months ago in a Tennessee hospital. They also noted that he is recovering well and plans to be back at work later this month, as planned, on a part-time basis.

Now keep in mind that the WSJ isn't revealing its sources for this news, so nothing has been officially confirmed. But it was announced in early January that he was considering a transplant after complications from his treatment for pancreatic cancer, so this news isn't completely far-fetched.

In my mind, no news is good news, so without an official announcement from Mr. Apple himself, I think it's safe to say we'll be seeing him back in action in a couple of weeks. And liver transplant or not, we sure hope his downtime has put him back on track with his health . . . we sure did miss seeing him at the WWDC this year.
