Wondercon 2009: Loter

Although it seemed that the expo hall at this year's Wondercon was a little less robust than years' past, there was plenty of cute to go around among all that geekiness. Take Loter for example. Makers of tees, toys, cards, and prints, their booth caught my eye from across the room with its retro vibe. I picked up a few of their prints and cards on my way out, which remind me a little of the stylized art of Eric Tam, who draws the awesome 60's era Disney movie posters. Obviously I'm a fan of retro, so this little figurine would fit in quite well with the other nicknacks I keep on my desk.

I just had one of those classic brain-fart moments when you see something and think it's clever and harmless, and then you actually, you know, think about it, and go, "Oh, come on." And with that I bring you this new Slide to Unlock T-shirt from ThinkGeek.

At first I was like, cool! iPhone T-shirt! And then my brain worked and I realized that it was an invitation your momma wouldn't approve of.

Call me a square, I can take it. Don't think it's sexist? Well, they're not making it in mens' sizes.

Totally Geeky or Geek Chic? The Guitar Hero Tee Shirt

I've been a fan of Nerdy Shirts for some time now, mostly because they offer a pleasant lineup of vintage chic geeky shirts that won't break the bank (they are all about $20) and you can probably bet on the fact that you'll be the only person you know with the design. Their most recent creation, The Guitar Hero combines the popular Guitar Hero game with every guitar player's hero, Jimi Hendrix. I like the design because it's subtle, cheeky and a little bit girly. It costs $20.

Public Domain: Cute Geeky Tee Shirts

When it comes to geek gear there are many varieties: Video gamer shirts, programmer shirts, swag bags, backpacks and tees...the list seems endless. However, while there seems to be no end of geeky tee shirts, it can sometimes be hard to find great shirts for girls because the guys seem to have claimed all the greatest vintage and video-game inspired designs. In fact, finding a medium between Hello Kitty, Atari, and code humor can be near impossible. But not impossible.

Public Domain has some adorable polaroid, joystick, brick phone mega and calculator watch-inspired tee shirts that more than live up to the needs of any chic girl or guy. They are all $25.

Click "Create and Share!" on the left hand side
Choose "Blog"
Give your photo a Title
Leave the category as "general"
Change the channel to "technology and gadgets"
Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this post was "museum, Lego")
Click on the "Add Image" link below the "body" box
A popup window will happen - click on "Browse" to find your image on your computer
Once you have the image chosen, click "Submit"
The popup will show you your image, choose size: "normal" - if you want, you can give it a title (which will show up as a caption)
Click "Insert" and the popup will go away
Your "body" box will now have some text in it. Leave it as is. If you want to add some text before the picture telling me why you love the download, do it before the code that has appeared.
Click Submit

Geek Chic Tee Shirts (Guy Geek Edition)

There is nothing worse than a geeky guy that only wears atrocious gamer shirts that he thinks are soooo cool. I'm talking Dungeons and Dragons, Halo 2, Final Fantasy and of course Counter Strike. Sure, those games are all great in their own right and you're probably really sweet, smart and rocking a great sense of humor, but there's an inherent "geek meter" that goes off in women's heads when they see guys adorned in a gamer tee. Of course, there are plenty of girls that are guilty of showing off shirts with cutesy emoticons and terribly geeky references, but it's the fellas that seem to exhibit the worse in geeky clothing choices.

So how can you impress the ladies with gamer shirts? Four out of five women I polled said they liked vintage prints and references (think Atari and Nintendo), subtle colors and shirts with cute robots. The fifth woman suggested you take the shirt off. If you're not ready to strip, here are some suggestions for ways you can make your geeky wardrobe a little more chic. read more

The Spinner Shirt, $19, by Panic Design's C. Sasser, is subtle, but filled with tech cred. The girl in front of you in the coffee line will think, "what a cute and artsy Mac user...I'll bet he could turn me on too" Not "I'll bet that guy lives in his mom's garage and binges on Cheetos."

Whether they'll admit it or not, girls dig guys that love arcade games because most girls dig arcades themselves but can rarely convince their BFFs to spend an extended amount of time in them. Guys, well, they're a whole different story. This Insert Coin Tee, $17.99, from Penny Arcade will satisfy everyone's arcade needs. "I know that when I used to go into arcades, it was common to see a column of developing primates lined up in front of the cabinets,"says the creator. "I don't know what it was like where you lived." As a matter of fact, it was.

Haven't you heard? Chicks love puns. Or at least this chick does. Punny shirts, like this Fractions Speak Louder Than Nerds! number from Threadless, $12, offers a conversation starter and a clean, chic design. You'll give off that "yeah, I'm kinda a nerd, but I have a few ex-girlfriends" vibe.

Instead of touting your geekiness how about underplaying it a little. Everyone loves leaving a little to be desired, right? This Google is ruining everything shirt by Scary Go Round, £9.00 (or $18 USD), says "remember when humans fumbled around in the dark for knowledge and being a know-it-all meant something?" She won't suspect you're gonna run back to your office and Google her the moment she gives you her name and digits.

The Wingding tee shirt from Toothpaste for Dinner, $16, pays homage to what may be the third geekiest font in the world. The text reads "If you can read this, thank a windging." Of course, if you ever meet someone that can read it without you telling them that you should try to hang on to them.

There really is nothing more chic than a geeksugar tee shirt - whether you're a woman or a man. First off, it shows you're a loyal reader and second off it proves you have good taste. Geek Chic Tee Shirts (Girl Geek Edition)

Last week I made a comment about some awful gamer tee shirts that seemed to strike a cord with some of you and I realized I should clarify: I recognize the joy of a nice gamer/geek shirt, but it has to have at least a hint of chic to get geeksugar approval. When is a geek shirt not chic? It's not chic if the reference is so bizarre that you know only Dungenmasters, elite gamers and men with questionable personal hygiene will get it. Also, not so chic are shirts that say *sigh*, WTF or LOL.

It is chic, however, to wear smart, design conscious, funny and, in some rare occasions even punny shirts with a geeky edge ("keeping it nerd free with my TI-83" - admit it, that's hilarious!). I even give bonus points to geeky top 10 lists (assuming more than 100,000 on this earth can understand them) and fun, programmer shout outs. I know, fashion is subjective, and geeks don't exactly have a good reputation in this field, but take this from me, geek chic tee shirts are possible.

I owe kudos to the boys at Kotaku for finding this cute Nintendo Princess Tee, $22. It gets my props for being fitted (seriously people, not all gamer shirts need to be gigantic sacks of potatoes) and has a soft vintage wash that makes it girlie - maybe I am heavily influenced by the fact that there's a giant, pink and sparkling Princess on it. The back says "Waiting to be rescued!" Everyone wants to pretend to be a damsel in distress once in a while, am I right? Even if only in a video game.

The I wanna text you up, $17.99, combines a vintage geek look with texting, which is contemporary geek and even a professional event these days. Also, the muted colors means this one works for a girl or a guy. Sure, the message of the shirt is a little racy, but it's clever enough that it's not creepy and any shout out to Color Me Badd is sooooo good.

Thinkgeek has long been a tee shirt destination for geeky guys across the WWW, but it offers plenty of simple and sweet options for girls too. The I Love My Geek, $17.99, shirt gets my goat cause it's a cute gift for a geeky guy to give his lady, but still feminine, fun and dare I say even romantic?

I'll admit, I am not as dedicated a 24 fan as YumSugar and PartySugar, but I can certainly appreciate a good Jack Bauer fix every once and a while. Case in point: This Nerdy Shirt "Bauer Power," which showcases good old Jack in his famous stance with a colorful rainbow and some geeky, and slightly feminine, flowers.
