Is Your House on Google Street View?

What a difference a year makes, especially if you are The Google. The monolith says that in 2008 alone, Street View's coverage has more than doubled in the US!

Even my dad's super rural home is now on Street View, to my total shock. I know I've asked you guys before if you had seen your homes on Street View, but many people mentioned that their houses weren't even on yet. Considering yesterday's mass addition to its coverage, I want to know: Is your place on Street View?

Googlers Ham It Up For Street View - Including the Icon!

Remember when I said my goal was to spot the Google Street View cars around town? Old goal! My new goal is to be spotted. My inspirations are these Google employees, who clowned around at the Googleplex (on the clock, I'd bet too) for their very own Street View cameras.

I have a small sampling of the madness in the gallery below, but visit Google Blogoscoped to see more of this goofy "photo shoot," including a YMCA and mime tribute! Of course my very favorite picture is this one, with the Street View icon himself (he's so tall!).

And I take back all my gushings about wanting to live/work/eat/sleep at the Google headquarters. It looks way too serious for me.

Google Street View Car Pulled Over by the Fuzz!

Coincidence of coincidences? Remember how I was talking that noise yesterday about wanting to spot a Google Street View car and Earthmine being the next best thing? Well that wasn't the next best thing, but this is: A Google Street View car (Prius, to be responsibly exact) was snapped - while being pulled over!

No word on why he was being pulled over, but something tells me that cop had an ounce of curiosity and a few minutes to kill.

Spotted in the Wild: Earthmine Street View Camera SUVs

It's my personal goal to catch one of Google's Street View vans in action, but this will have to do for now: I caught this Earthmine SUV with the rotating cameras on top instead.

I'd never heard of Earthmine, so I snooped around on their website, and almost dismissed them as a Google Street View copycat until I watched the demo. Watch as you're allowed to zoom in and get panoramic views (the views of being on the Bay Bridge are especially cool), and are also allowed to measure buildings - which puts Earthmine as more of a corporate, specialized tool than for us, your average Joe.

New goal? Get captured by Earthmine's cameras!

There's no end to the amount of entertainment that Google Maps' Street View provides. I remember when it came out and I thought, cool, I can look at the outside of hotels I'm going to stay in and my house. I didn't dream of the possibilities that could be exploited by a bunch of Google cars until controversy started popping up when it caught some odd and slightly incriminating photos.

I can't get enough of Street View snafus and surprises, so my new favorite website is Google Street View Sightings. It compiles all the odd, fun, cool, and silly things that the 360 degree cameras catch - I was pumped to see Mrs. Doubtfire's house in San Francisco, the hot babes van, and a creepy guy doing dirty deeds!

US Defense Department Bans Google Street View From Military Sites

I love the fact that Google Street View is so cool yet so controversial. Did anyone seriously think we'd ever get to zoom in on a map to see a 360° panoramic image of streets from all over the world? It's impressive technology to say the least. Although people have had to go to great lengths to have their pictures removed from street view and Europe is already blurring faces and license plates on Street View images, I still think it's a great service. When I heard that the Pentagon has banned Google from filming inside army bases, I certainly wasn't surprised or shocked.

According to BBC News, Google has now been barred from filming and conducting detailed studies of bases. In particular, streets inside Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX are totally off limits, supposedly posing a "potential threat" to security. You'll notice on Google Street View that all images from inside the base have been removed. Google's Street View in Europe to Blur Images

When Google's Street View launches in Europe, photos will be modified to ensure that faces and license plates are not visible. In hopes of offering more privacy to the people who appear in the images, Google is also considering making the US version completely anonymous. If you're looking for a good excuse to have some fun with Google Street Views, now is your chance because Google has swapped the regular orange Street View man with a witch. As you navigate your way from street to street, you can conveniently fly around on a broomstick, making Street View that much more fun to use.
