I Don't Need a Bird to Love the Music Cage

Let me start off by saying that this is not a birdcage. Although I wouldn't mind the sound of a little bird tweeting to wake me up in the morning (instead of my annoying alarm clock), this is something way geekier.

Called the Music Cage, this speaker plays your tunes wirelessly over a computer or a Bluetooth connection via your mobile phone. You can prop it up on a nice side table, or let it hang from your ceiling like you would a real, very classy birdcage. Although Nendo, the Japanese company that brings this unique piece of gadget artistry doesn't say what the little switches are for on the front (I assume one of them is the power switch. Just guessing here.), I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one to find out.

Speak-er Speech Bubble Speakers Are Totally Hot

Can you hear me now? It's rare that I come across something that has me tossing all reasoning out the window, and immediately reaching for my credit card. When I first saw this pair of six-watt Speak-er speech bubble speakers ($120), I knew I had to have them. Unfortunately for us, they are going to be sold in limited quantities and won't be sent out until April! I want them now!

I guess I'm just hoping that maybe, just maybe, out of all the geeks in the world that will have these on their wish lists, that I can get my hands on a set of these babies. A girl can dream, no?

Can a Wooden Cabinet Emulate iPhone Speakers?

When I saw Apartment Therapy's Home geek tip that I didn't know existed, I had to try it out. While on vacation, they forgot iPhone speakers, and therefore improvised by putting their iPhone in a cabinet, which acted as a makeshift speaker.

They say "the wood warmed it up and gave it a little more resonance than it would normally have." Since I use my iPhone for music at home when I need the portability (in the kitchen, etc.), without any sort of help, I wanted to try out AT's tip.

I tried a mounted wooden cabinet, then my wooden medicine cabinet. For me, all I got was a muffled version of my iPhone speakers. I even tried putting it, sound blaring, inside wooden drawers. Nope. The iPhone sounded better without any assistance, but of course, not as great as it would with external speakers I'd plug it into. In or out of the cabinet is sort of a last resort anyway, but maybe you could try this trick out at home and see if it works for you.

As much as I have championed the ability of the iPhone to replace two devices and it has allowed me stop carrying my iPod every day, I will in no way stop being fascinated by iPod speakers. Ask a Geek Girl: Bluetooth Speakerphone Conundrum

I got an email from a friend the other day wondering about which Bluetooth speakerphone she should get to be compliant with the upcoming California Hands-Free law that goes into effect tomorrow! She writes:

Do you know which visor Bluetooth device I can get for my LGEnv2 and my husband's LGvx5400? We have Verizon and they don't have anything at the stores yet that I can pick up. I have to be able to do voice dialing and hear the other person clearly. Oh, and hubby's gonna be spittin' mad if it's complicated!

Since I didn't want anyone spitting on anything, I got right on the task! To find out which device I would recommend, just read more.

After a little digging, I finally settled on the Motorola T505 hands-free speaker. It's simple to use (just push a few buttons on the back to link up), and you can either use the effective internal speaker to gab away, or with slightly more effort you can program your signal to route through your FM radio frequency for a better sounding conversation. Audio-voice dialing and caller ID make it the best for in-car dialing without picking up your phone. It's not the cheapest on the block (coming in at $97 on Newegg), but it's getting some really positive reviews and seems to be the easiest to use. Another cool feature? You can stream your tunes through the T505 from your Bluetooth compatible MP3 player, and still be able to take calls with noise-reduction technology!
