Cheap Covers Give Sony's PSP a Nice Glow

What is with glow in the dark gear? Yes I'm old, waay too old to care whether or not something will light up like a glow worm in the dark, but I still find it fascinating (and fun!) to watch something transform like this. XCM has created colorful Magic Night Glow face plates that can be used with Sony PSP portable gaming devices.

When the player is exposed to sunlight for only a few minutes, it will be ready to show off its glow-in-the-dark beauty. Even when they aren't aglow, the colors are stylin' enough that glow capabilities aren't the only reason for their chicness. No word on availability yet, but pricing will most likely be around $25 for each case.

Sony Announces PS3 Slim, PSP Minis at GamesCom 2009

Although I'm not in Germany attending the GamesCom 2009, I've been anxiously awaiting the announcements to flow in from the upcoming conferences. First up, and admittedly the one I've been waiting for, is Sony's announcement of a thinner and cheaper PS3.

Launching on Sept. 1, the PS3 Slim will come with a body that's 33 percent smaller, a big 120 GB hard drive, and will set you back just $300 - $100 less than past PS3 price tags. But if you don't mind the current PS3 heft and can't hold off until September to get your hands on a console, you can now purchase an 80 GB PS3 for the same $300 price. Plus, getting your presale on has never been easier, as both Kmart and Sears have listed the PS3 Slim on their websites for presale already.

PSP Minis are smaller, downloadable games that are limited to 100 MB in size, specially made for your PSP Go. When the PSP Go launches this Fall, there will be 15 Minis available for you to download and play right from the on-board store - titles like Tetris and Fieldrunners have already been confirmed. Think of Minis as an app for your PSP Go - small, quick, and fun titles that will cost less to download than a full-scale game.

Sony's PSP: A Must Have At Amsterdam's Fashion Week

Sony's PlayStation Portable handhelds made a rare appearance on the catwalk during Amsterdam's Fashion Week. As fashionable and sleek as they are, I'd like to know who, what and why Sony used these runway models to showcase the PSP- especially in the Netherlands! Maybe it's self-explanatory (duh), but at least they were taught how to use the new Go!Cam, and by the looks of it had some fun taking it for a test-drive! The Go!Cam is a small PSP add-on that fits right on the PSP and has a built-in mic. And with a 4GB memory stick, you can store up to two hours of video or 40,000 photos. Not too shabby!
The PSP portable system can handle multiple applications like music, video, photo, internet, and wireless connectivity. It also boasts a library that combines more than 135 games and more than 430 feature films, TV programs, videos and downloadable content. Priced at $170.

Sony Cuts Price of PSP By $30, Now $170

Sony announced yesterday that it will lower the price of its PSP gaming device by $30 to $170. Most gamers and industry buffs speculate this is due to stiff competition from Nintendo's Wii console.

It's the first time Sony has officially lowered suggested retail prices on the PSP since its debut in March 2005, says Business Week.

Last month, I did a poll of geeksugar readers to see how many people play Sony's PlayStation 3 (non portable) vs. how many people play the Nintendo Wii, and 80 percent reported they favored the Wii. In February, the Wii was the top-selling console video game system with an estimated 335,000 sold, outpacing the Microsoft Xbox 360 (228,000) and the PS3 (127,000), according to The NPD Group.

So does that mean the price of other gaming consoles will continue to go down, or is this just the gamers' lucky day?

PSP vs. PSP Go: Which Is Better?

I got the chance to check out LittleBigPlanet on the PSP yesterday, and put it to a head-to-head test on Sony's latest console, the PSP Go. So after fiddling around with both for a few minutes, I asked myself: "Which is better?" It's really hard to say. I mean, you'd think that moving from one PSP to the other would be as simple as moving from the DS to the DS Lite, but then, you would be wrong.

The PSP Go is notably more compact than the PSP, making the controls closer together, which is perfect for smaller, ahem, more feminine or childlike hands. Good marketing ploy perhaps? Either way, the PSP Go has an amazing screen, is 40 percent lighter than the old version, has the same general control layout, 16 GB of on-board memory, and an online shop to download games straight to your console.

But getting down to the nuts and bolts, which of the two PSPs is more comfy to play with? Find out my take when you read more.

Although I love the new screen and portability of the PSP Go (you don't have to carry around any cartridges), I have to admit that playing with the old PSP felt a lot better in my hands. And besides that, the price point is kinda high for a portable console (a whopping $250), and the wireless is not what you'd expect from a device that costs that much (wireless B, really? It's the same as what comes stocked on the PSP-3000). Change isn't always easy, but I thought that Sony would have made it a no-brainer, since they were the only gaming company that released a new console at E3 this year. The PSP Go hits shelves this Fall for $250, so the decision is up to you.

On My Soapbox About the New PSP Lilac Bundle

Honestly, I kind of hate the way game companies categorize women. Take this new lilac-colored PSP bundle for example. According to Sony, it's being released later this year "as part of a new focus on expanding the PSP market to female gamers" and is coming packed with the latest installment of the Hannah Montana PSP game. Okay, so what's so wrong with Hannah Montana? Nothing really, except for the fact that Sony is also releasing Assassins Creed as a bundle, as well as bringing Little Big Planet to the PSP later this year. So why the Hannah Montana bundle? Oh right, cause women must not like to play the same games guys do.

For me to drop my $200 dollars on a game bundle, you better be packing my PSP with LBP, or even the recently announced Rock Band Unplugged. I know gamers are still going to pick up this bundle just for the console color, but come summertime, I'm betting on seeing quite a few copies of Hannah Montana for the PSP in the bargain bin, causing "women" to spend more money on a game they'll actually play. Am I the only one frustrated with this bundle announcement?
