Do You Store Your Contacts' Data Anywhere Else?

Last weekend's server crash resulting in T-Mobile Sidekick users losing all of their data left a lot of Sidekick users understandably angry. At first, T-Mobile considered recovering the lost data unlikely, but now it seems that most of the data has been recovered and will be restored to Sidekick users shortly.

Part of the problem: Microsoft offers no digital backup for the Sidekick. My iPhone's address book is backed up on my computer, but (similar to my Moleskine addiction) I also keep a paper address book for important phone numbers - just in case. What about you? Do you have your contacts' information stored somewhere so you won't lose it?

T-Mobile Sidekick Owners May Not Get Their Data Back

Over the weekend, T-Mobile experienced a server failure from its data server provider Danger, which is a subsidiary of Microsoft (umm, I'm already suspicious of a company that has a server named Danger!). Servers go down all the time, but T-Mobile has announced that it is unable to recover personal data stored on Sidekicks.

T-Mobile is urging Sidekick customers to keep their devices turned on, keep it connected to a power source, and to not reset it or remove the battery. Unlike BlackBerry owners that can backup their data using RIM's desktop manager or with iTunes for the iPhone, Microsoft didn't have a backup program or export tool for the Sidekick, which means many Sidekick owners are furious with T-Mobile right now.

Sidekick LX Review: Takes Me Back to Simpler Times

When HipTop launched the Sidekick II back in 2004, I was 100 percent on board. It was the first phone I bought that let me browse the Internet, check my mail, chat over IM, take pictures and video, and text, all in one easy-to-use device. I wore that phone out and still think fondly of it today. Sure it was kind of a monster truck compared to other phones on the market, but I considered it an accessory, not just a phone.

Reviewing the Sidekick LX took me back to those eye-opening times when I first discovered that I don't have to carry five different gadgets with me, and could always (always) stay connected.

Although I haven't had a Sidekick since, I can spot a lot of fond similarities between the II and the LX. This could be considered good or bad, depending on how you look at it. Find out what I mean when you read more.

Both the LX and my old II have all the basics: instant messaging, text, camera, email and web browsing. What more could you ask for, right? Well, my old Sidekick II didn't have a music player (but you could hack your way to a few tunes if I recall correctly), and wasn't very speedy, so adding the music capabilities and the 3G connectivity really kicks this model up a few notches. The purple "orchid" color option was really rich and beautiful (something I didn't have with my pearly white II), and you can customize it further with additional skins. It still has the same trusty interface, with the scroll wheel and rotating top screen.

Thankfully, T-Mobile has reduced the size of the phone since the old days, and this model is much slimmer and lighter than I remember. But that's pretty much where it ends. The Sidekick hasn't made any huge overhauls since earlier models besides the addition of color, size and speed, and a timely Twitter app. Overall, the phone is still fun, easy to use, and contains all the things you need to stay connected, which is all you can ask for in a reliable mobile device.

Stylin' New Sidekicks From T-Mobile

Thanks to The Boy Genius Report, we've just learned that the Sidekick LX and the Sidekick Slide will soon be available for purchase! The sleek Sidekick LX shown here will come with this high-resolution LCD screen by Sharp. Each Sidekick will come with MMS/SMS/IM, 1.3 megapixel cameras (with the LX having a flash), Bluetooth, a built-in music player, web browsing capabilities plus much more. Apparently, the Sidekick LX will be available for current T-Mobile customers on October 17th, and for new users on October 24th for $299 with a two year agreement. While the Sidekick Slide will hit stores on November 7th for $199 with a two year agreement as well. Can't wait to see which one Jenna Jameson will get first dibs on. Aren't these new colors just grand? The turquoise, pink and yellow designs were starting to make me nauseous.

High profile designers like Betsey Johnson and Diane Von Furstenberg have teamed up with T-Mobile to customize 11 Sidekick 3's for charity. Each Sidekick was auctioned off on eBay, with the proceeds going to "Fashion Targets Breast Cancer," an organization raising money to benefit breast cancer causes worldwide. Colorful Sidekick To Hit Market Soon

With a reputation as the communication device of choice for B-list celebrities like Brooke Hogan and Brody Jenner, the newest Sidekick model may soon hit the market in a more colorful, eye-catching package. According to Gizmodo, the Sidekick ID will be available in a variety of colors and will have a $50 mail-in-rebate (making the final price $100) and an April 18ish release date.

The special edition Dwayne Wade Sidekick 3 was released in February.
