Download of the Day: Pizza Hut Shortcut

Ordering your medium stuffed-crust pizza just got a whole lot easier. (Goodbye, Wii Fit training progress!)

Pizza Hut has just introduced a Pizza Hut shortcut tool that sits right on your desktop and allows you to build customized orders. It's both Mac and PC friendly and makes online ordering a breeze.

To install, just click on the "Get it Now" button, then"Yes" for Adobe Air (it will skip this step if you already have), then click "Install," "Continue," then "Agree." And voila, you're all set to get started on your yummy pizza ordering frenzy!

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

First of all, join the Download of the Day group
Click "Create and Share!" on the left hand side
Choose "Blog"
Give your photo a Title
Leave the category as "general"
Change the channel to "technology and gadgets"
Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Download of the Day")
Click on the "Add Image" link below the "body" box
A popup window will happen - click on "Browse" to find your image on your computer
Once you have the image chosen, click "Submit"
The popup will show you your image, choose size: "normal" - if you want, you can give it a title (which will show up as a caption)
Click "Insert" and the popup will go away
Your "body" box will now have some text in it. Leave it as is. If you want to add some text before the picture telling me why you love the download, do it before the code that has appeared.
Click Submit

So join the Download of the Day group and share information about all your favorite downloads! Yours just might end up on the geeksugar homepage!

Ever since I made the leap to Firefox, I can't imagine using any other web browser to navigate my way around the internet. Even considering the current controversy regarding the browser's growing pains I'm still hooked. I mean, who doesn't love colorful tabs and the idea of an open-source Internet browser? Anyways, Firefox has become an integral part of my daily routine, so if you're like me, you might just want to know these keyboard shortcuts to make your net surfing even more efficient!

Ctrl+T (new tab)

Geek Tip: A Whole Slew of Google Reader Shortcuts

As a devoted Google Reader user, I relish any tips I can use to make it even more useful - so imagine my delight the other day when I let my laptop slip (I told you I was a klutz) and grabbed for it, panicked - and accidentally had hit a key combo that brought up a key of Google Reader keyboard shortcuts.

Don't worry, I replicated it - it's shift + ? - and you can also open it as a separate page.

All this time I've only known about J and K to go up and down through stories, but there's a whole world of keyboard shortcuts! Somehow these always end up being faster than using my mouse for me - not unlike my other new beloved shortcut to shut down my Mac!

Learning useful hotkeys makes my heart swell, as do any efficient shortcuts (I say it once a week to somebody: if you're not using Quicksilver, you're wasting your own time).

Here's two keyboard shortcuts to expedite shutdown for any Apple computer:

To shut down, press Control + Command (Apple) + Option and Eject for shut down.
Alternatively, Control + Command + Eject restarts your computer.

If you don't already know these, you're probably only half geek, but even the biggest computer nerds among us sometimes take the long route, so here are some PC keyboard shortcuts you should know. They're sure to make your time at your computer easier, and allow you to stock up on those precious seconds which you could be using to surf the web. Tune in tomorrow for a Mac edition.

File menu options in current program = Alt + F
Edit options in current program = Alt + E
Universal Help in almost every Windows program = F1
Select all text = Ctrl + A
Cut selected item = Shift + Del

Geek Tip: Prevent Web Blindness by Increasing Font Size

Inevitably, there will come a day when even while your glasses are on, or your contacts are in, you'll be squinting to see the small print on your monitor. Is it old age? Too far from your monitor? Who knows, but there is a keyboard shortcut solution to keep you from looking like you just took a whiff of something totally rotten.

You can increase the font size on your web pages just by hitting ctrl + on PC's, and command + on Mac's. Very simple, very discreet, and no more straining to get closer to your screen. Plus, it's just as easy to get text back to normal by hitting either ctrl - or command - . Oh, and after you're done surfing in comfort, make an appointment to get your eyes checked. . . . squinting doesn't look cute on anyone!

Geek Tip: Fast and Easy iTunes Shortcuts

I love learning quick shortcuts for various applications, especially when it means I don't have to use my mouse to adjust settings, etc. To quickly adjust the volume in iTunes, just place your mouse arrow over the top of the horizontal volume bar. Rather than clicking the bar to adjust the volume, just scroll up and down. Also, if you need to quickly pause a song, make sure your iTunes window is open and click your space bar. This will instantly stop your music. I suggest giving them both a try!

iPhone Tip: More Keyboard Shortcuts

Thanks to reader T S for commenting on my latest iPhone tips post. Turns out, holding your finger down on different keys on the keyboard opens up quite a few options while you're typing. She writes:

You can also type letters with accents by holding your finger on the letter, so if you put your finger on "e" and hold you'll get the option of é, è, ë, etc.

I just spent the last hour holding down various keys to see what would happen, and found more shortcuts! To see my list, read more.

Holding down the period button when entering someone's email address gives an option of adding a ".com," ".net," ".edu," or ".org" suffix (I love this one!)
Holding down the period button gives the option of ellipses.
Holding down the "0" key gives the option for the º symbol. (I've never had to use it, but nice to have the option!)
Holding down the "-" key gives the option of an em dash (-).

I also knew that touching any image in Safari gives you the option to download it to your phone - am I missing anything else?
