Gadgets Found in Chinatown: Downright Shocking

The touristy shops in San Francisco's Chinatown are teeming with gadgets, but it's usually overpriced cameras and items of questionable authenticity. But in one of my favorite fun crap stores, I found a variety of gadgets that will shock you - literally.

I knew the geek prank of late was shocking gadgets, but I had only seen the games, as evidenced by the Sugar office showdown! I didn't know there was a whole world of punkings to be had with hand-shocking gadgets, but in Chinatown, I found them.

Boss bugging you? Give him a USB stick with your latest "project" on it and watch his palm buzz. IT guy making fun of you again? Put this mouse on your pad and shut him up right away. Annoying little brother that keeps asking for an iPod? Give him this one!

You Can Never Be Too Thin: The LG Prada Phone

It's not unusual to see a designer smartphone with dumbed-down specs, but the latest entry to the designer gadget lineup seems to be packing both brains and looks. The Android-running Prada Phone by LG is a skinny one (naturally) at 8.5mm thick, and comes packed with a 4.3-inch touchscreen display, a 1.0Ghz dual-core processor for speed, 8GB of onboard storage, and an 8MP rear-facing camera so you can snap crystal clear photos of your daily outfits.

The signature Saffiano pattern on the backside adds a touch of class to the phone, while a whole range of Prada-branded extras, including a docking station, Bluetooth headset, and headphones, keep you accessorized. Unfortunately, for those of us stateside, the Prada phone will only be available in the UK for now (at a shockingly low price - free on a two-year contract), but you can fuel your dreams with a better look at the phone in the video after the break.

Waste Not, Want Not: Consumers Hang On to Frugal Recessionary Habits

The recession was a shock to everyone's systems, and as a result, more people have picked up frugal habits. According to a New York Times article, consumers have stuck with those thrifty ways post-recession.

One of the bigger saving trends is extending the life of products. For example, people are taking longer to upgrade cars and gadgets like phones and laptops; even daily hygiene products like toothpaste and shampoo are being used to the last drop. And this isn't just a temporary behavioral shift. Nancy F. Koehn, a professor at the Harvard Business School and consumerism expert, believes that this attitude will be permanent or long-lasting, because of insecurities about how reliable the government and major companies are in a financial crisis.

It seems like people are straying away from the shiny new things and opting for the necessities route. What about you? How often do you upgrade your gadgets?
