Website of the Day: Center'd

If you want to plan something - say a get-together, outing, event, restaurant date, whatever - Center'd is a new site that offers plenty of planning tools to make an event come together. This site, which I spotted on Mashable, provides info from users on what restaurants, attractions, events, and shopping places are worth visiting (they currently offer listings for 12 major cities across the US). You can also pick from categories like outdoors, kid friendly, recession busters, and romantic to narrow your search even more. Once you decide what you want to do, you can easily invite friends and decide, as a group, when the event should take place.

Found a cool website you'd like to share? To learn how to post your favorite websites to our Website of the Day group, read more.

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

First of all, join the Website of the Day group.

Click the pink "Share" menu on the top left side of the page.

Choose "Blog" and "Regular Post."

Give your story a "Title."

Fill in the "Body" with a link to your favorite website and the reasons why you love it.

Click "Next."

Choose the audience for your story to "Website of the Day" in the dropdown menu.

Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Website of the Day").

Change channel to "Technology and Gadgets."

Fill in tag field with relevant tags.

Click "I’m done" to submit content.

So join the Website of the Day group and share information about all your favorite sites! Yours just might end up on the geeksugar homepage!

Cell Phone Camera Tip: Remember Restaurant Menus

I have a habit my boyfriend hates, but it's really hard to stop. Every time I pass a restaurant on the street, I have to stop and read the menu. I can't help it. I've learned to do a really quick glance for the most important things - type of food, prices, all while keeping pace with my impatient boyfriend.

Then it struck me the other day when a menu caught my eye, doy, I'll just take a pic of it (my cell phone's camera never stops being useful). I get to satisfy my street menu urge, and even better, when I plug my iPhone into my computer, iPhoto '09 and Picasa geotag it, so I know exactly where I saw it.

P.S. Menu type too small? Snap a pic of the restaurant's sign and look it up on Yelp later.

ReadyPing Will Text You When Your Table Is Ready

Imagine for a moment that the next time you go to a busy restaurant, you don't get stuck holding a big pager that is bound to scare the living daylights out of you when it vibrates to alert you that your table is ready.

The solution? The ingenious and brilliant service from ReadyPing that allows restaurant hosts to text message their guests to let them know that they can be seated. To get started, the only thing the restaurant has to do is sign up for an account; then they will enter the guest's name, party size, and phone number into their system and when the table is ready, the host can press a button and the guests will be text messaged.

What I love about this is the convenience, and especially the fact that you aren't stuck sitting in the restaurant while you wait.

The service is currently available to restaurants for a monthly fee that includes unlimited text messages, and it's already being rolled out across the US in chain restaurants like Claim Jumper, The Cheesecake Factory, and Maggiano's.

Source

Atari Founder Opens a uWink in Silicon Valley!

I've talked about uWink before, the restaurant chain started by Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, that combines food, drinks, and media, by offering games, table-to-table tournaments, Internet access, gaming, entertainment and movie trailers to guests.

Listen-up geeks, uWink has just opened its doors at a new location in Mountain View, CA. Here you'll find customers ordering American comfort food via touchscreen terminals that double as multiplayer game consoles, 20 projectors that show everything from eye candy to football games, while wood walls attempt to provide a natural counterpoint to all that tech.

What a perfect combination: Geek capital of the US mixed with geeky restaurant, equals - perfect geek date!

Website of the Day: GoMobo

Skip the line at busy restaurants by ordering ahead and paying for meals via SMS with GoMobo.com- a site which recently launched in New York City. Now spanning most of the nation, GoMobo is an easy to use service where you create a free online account and then send a GoCode to 466626 (GOMOBO) on your phone keypad to order by text. You'll then get a confirmation message letting you know when your order will be ready. Once you get to the restaurant just go to the GoMobo Express sign and tell the cashier the last 4 digits of your mobile phone number to pick up your order. There are no hidden service fees for using the GoMobo service, you just pay your normal text messaging rate from your network provider. Something I still need to try out, but sounds like a great new service nonetheless! To learn how to post your favorite sites to the Website of the Day group, just read more

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

Click "Insert" and the popup will go away

Your "body" box will now have some text in it. Leave it as is. If you want to add some text before the picture telling me why you love the website, do it before the code that has appeared.

Website of the Day: Menuism

Well now you can take a peek at restaurant dishes online with a site called menuism, which is essentially a social network for all foodies like YumSugar. With menuism you get full restaurant reviews with ratings from cities across the country. Share dining experiences with others and submit your best and worst meals. I'd have to say my favorite part of the site is all the food photos...they almost top Yum's food photography...almost.To learn how to post your favorite sites to the Website of the Day group, just read more

Totally Geeky or Geek Chic? Dark Restaurant

The first "dark restaurant" in China opened in December and reactions to the idea of the unusual dining experience are varied. The restaurant, which is located in Beijing, has its interior painted completely in black. Customers are greeted by a lit entrance hall and are escorted by waiters wearing night vision goggles into the pitch dark dining room to help them find their seats. Flashlights, mobile phones, and even lit watches are prohibited while in this area.

The concept originated in Europe, but has quickly found a huge international techie-following because of the night-vision tie in and unusual lighting concept. So, is it geek chic, totally geeky, or just a great way to experience something different.

Totally Geeky or Geek Chic? Dark Restaurant

Website of the Day: Duffel

There are a ton of travel planning sites, but I just found my new favorite. Duffel (find the site at duffelup) calls itself "a trip-planning tool for people who are not planning any trips," but it's pretty handy for actual trip planning, too.

Sign into the site to create trips - real or imagined - to any place in the world. Then add the Duffel bookmarking tool to your browser's bookmarks. When you visit sites of interest for your trip - hotels, tours, restaurant listings, or even just a random sentence or two about something cool to do in the area - click the bookmark to save it to your Duffel. You can set saved trip information to public or private, or opt to share them with just a few people, like family or travel partners.

There are more great features on the site, too, from the easy to use drag and drop interface to the incorporation of Google maps to a printable itinerary view condensing all of your saved information into a printable list. Duffel also offers suggestions to popular destinations like New York City or Las Vegas.

I've been having a blast creating and adding to a few "dream" trips I'd like to take . . . now the only problem is figuring out where to go first.

Do you have an interesting website you want to share? Join the Website of the Day group where you can post your favorite website! And you never know, it could be featured on GeekSugar! Here's a detailed guide to posting questions or posts to groups if you are new to the PopSugar Community.

Has Google Latitude Gone Too Far?

I have mixed feelings about location-based services like Google Latitude, which pinpoints and shares your location in real time, or Foursquare, the application allowing you to "check in" and share your location with friends. Granted, there are privacy settings, but the whole tracking-in-real-time thing creeps me out a bit.

Now it seems Latitude got a little bit creepier. According to a Google blog post, your location history will now be saved to access it later. Useful for remembering where you were last weekend, or for finding that cool restaurant whose name you forgot to jot down; scary for anyone worried about potential stalkers.

I'm not a big user of these services, so I can't decide how I feel about the new feature. What do you think? Is Latitude saving too much information, or is it just another enhancement to their service?

Has Google Latitude Gone Too Far?

Yes, the new feature is a little freaky.

No, it's a logical enhancement to Latitude.

I'm torn on this one. I'll explain in the comments.
