HP Unveils the Web-Friendly Photosmart Premium Printer

This morning here in San Francisco, HP announced their first web-enabled printer called the TouchSmart. With a touchscreen control panel that has the look and feel of an iPhone, the TouchSmart will offer apps that make it easy for one-touch printing. HP has already teamed up with companies like Fandango (movie-ticket printing), Google (maps, calendar printing, etc.), USA Today (news article printing), and Nickelodeon (kids activities) to offer useful applications. The printer's API is completely open, so you can expect hundreds of more free apps - like RSS reader apps and airline apps - to become available by its Fall launch date.

The eco-friendly person that I am, at first I was perturbed by the fact that this printer will only promote more printing and unnecessary paper usage - when you can already buy your movie tickets online and pick them up at the theater without having to print them. But then there are those instances when you need your boarding pass printed up in an instant, or you don't want look at your laptop while following a recipe, so this printer is perfect for a variety of scenarios where you don't want to be computer dependent.

Seeing the printer in person, it sure isn't something you're going to be able to sit on the end of your kitchen counter (it's rather large), but it is wireless, so if you've got the room for it, even better . . . and keep in mind, it won't need to be connected to a laptop or computer. The Photosmart Premium printer will retail for $399.

On Tuesday, a fire broke out in actor Nick Nolte's Malibu home, forcing him to make a quick exit and escape through a window. The fire was said to have been caused by an electrical malfunction, which Nolte believes originated from his faulty printer. The damage was estimated at three million dollars.

We've heard about fires from bad batteries in cell phones, and laptops over-heating, but I'm wondering if any of you have actually had any "real life" serious experiences with gadgets malfunctioning and causing damage to your home? Let me know in the comments below!

I know I boasted about being out of the printer game, freeing up the desk space for more efficient things a few months ago, but it appears I'm back in - my boyfriend and I decided that we really needed a scanner, and Ta-Da! Our scanner came with a printer (bonus: it makes my Fandango outings a lot easier).

So now it looks like I will be back to shopping for one of the most annoying things to shop for ever: printer ink refills. However, Lifehacker tipped me off to the best place to find refills: Amazon's Ink and Toner Finder. Simply select your printer manufacturer and the model, and Amazon will return results for everything that will work in your printer, even generic brands, so you get the best savings!

Canon's Selphy Compact Photo Printer: Love or Leave?

I've never considered printers to be a "fun" gadget, but that's certainly the name of the game with Canon's compact SELPHY CP770.

The Selphy, which resembles a rubber bucket, is definitely a family friendly printer. Just insert your memory card, check out your pics on the 2.5-inch display and start printing - no computer required! You can also print via Bluetooth with other devices. With a typical 4 x 6-inch photo only taking three minutes to print, this may be a useful on-the-go printer after all. And as for quality? They say it is lab-quality, but we'll have to see about that. It's priced at $150. What do you think? Do you love? Or feel like leaving it?

Here's a reason to keep a home printer around! Inkjet Tattoo Paper lets you design custom temporary tattoos, which is great when those 50-cent jobs from the gumball machine won't cut it. Think of how great these would be for theme parties and costumes (these are way better than just whipping out a Sharpie for that Jeffrey Sebelia neck tattoo or your Kat Von D impression).

You only need soap and water to remove these, unlike regular temp tats - which I'll gamely sport for a pirate party, but come Monday, I don't want a speckled mess of colors encircling my arm at work. I don't know what kind of theme party this necessitates, but I would so print out and slap on an Apple tattoo or a Gameboy tramp stamp!

Do You Still Have a Printer at Home?

I recently decided to take the plunge and get rid of our household's printer. . . and NOT replace it. That's right, I am going to be printer free in 2008! This decision has been a long time coming. We haven't used the printer that sits on the desk for what feels like ages, choosing instead to hit up Kinko's or Office Max with a thumb drive (and I know some of you rapscallions do it at work).

This convenience (and cheapness) is exactly what I need right now. What I don't need is a big hunk of plastic taking up room on my desk and costing me half my paycheck when I need to replace the ink cartridge - which, of course, I can never identify in the store unless I bring in the exact cartridge I pulled out of the printer. Phew. I'm getting this off my chest and my printer off my desk!

Good riddance, printer! We had a good run. What about you?

Although Polaroid cameras may now be considered retro gadgets, there's just something about instant still-image cameras that I find totally fascinating. By the end of this year, Zink will be coming out with a camera that resembles a modernized Polaroid camera that will print quality photos-instantly. Featured on Engadget, the Integrated Digital Camera and Printer works as a digital cam with 7-megapixels, a 2-inch screen and a 3x optical zoom. All you have to do is pop in a SD memory card, flash away, and choose which images you want to print on Zink's 2-inch by 3-inch borderless paper. No word on pricing just yet.
