Have You Used Someone Else's Computer to View Sites You Shouldn't?

A New Jersey man was arrested this week for regularly sneaking into a church to access porn on a nun's computer, SFGate reports. He was finally caught by a custodian and chased out to a police officer, but I have to wonder what this guy was on. Maybe he didn't have his own computer, but a NUN'S computer?! I mean, I freak out when I'm at the library and think someone next to me is using the computers there to access porn, but a CHURCH? Really?! That's a form of desperation (or fetishism?) I just cannot wrap my head around.

I did a poll a few months ago asking you guys if you used your work computer to view NSFW content, and a lot of you did. So now I want to know, have you ever used someone else's computer (work computers only count if it was your coworker's computer) to access porn, NSFW content, or any stuff you basically thought you shouldn't be looking at?

Do You View "Not Safe For Work" Content at the Office?

Earlier this week USA Today featured an article about how "Technology makes porn easier to access at work" and while that seems like a no-brainer, I was struck by how many companies have gone so far as to install devices to block porn and risqué websites on their office supplied computers and portable devices. According to the article, 65 percent of US companies used software to block workers' access to inappropriate websites in 2005. Why have companies set it up? According to USA Today:

About 16% of men who have access to the Internet at work acknowledged having seen porn while on the job, according to a survey for Websense by Harris Interactive in 2006. Eight percent of women said they had. But of those who acknowledged viewing porn sites at work, only 6% of men and 5% of women acknowledged that they had done so intentionally.

The issue of blocking access is especially relevant when it comes to portable wireless devices like laptops and smartphones like the iPhone, which offer easy and seemingly private web access. While I fully understand many of the sites people cruise during the workday could fall into the "Not Safe For Work" (or NSFW) category, I can't imagine accessing porn on my work computer. Am I alone here? Do you intentionally view content you know is NSFW in the office?

iPhone vs. BB Survey Draws Some Interesting Conclusions

A recent survey released by Retrevo (an electronics shopping site) comparing iPhone and Blackberry users paints an interesting picture. The respondents are 445 iPhone and BlackBerry owners distributed across gender, age, income, and location in the US. Highlights include:

35 percent of iPhone users would be turned off by a date with outdated gadgets.
iPhone owners use their phones more - they claim to consume more adult content, videos, news, and sports scores.
iPhone owners text more often than BlackBerry users.
iPhone owners claim to be more extroverted, bigger jocks, and more intellectual.

I use both a BlackBerry and an iPhone, so I'm not sure how I feel about the results of the survey. Do you agree with any of them? Are iPhone owners seriously more into porn that BlackBerry owners? Hmm . . .

WWDC Highlights: No (Wo)Man's Land

Although I feel right at home surrounded by gadgets and technology, attending the WWDC made me realize that I was walking into a man's world. Making my way to the West Hall of the Moscone Center, I could see that the line outside was 99 percent XY chromosome, and only a spattering of ladies braved the gaggle of geeks alone.

Even though I was outnumbered, I could still find joy in the little things that happen when you get this many geeks together in one place. For example, one of my favorite moments of the day took place after all the big announcements in the keynote had come and gone, and I made my way to the restrooms. Yes, just like at MacWorld, there was a big line for the men's room, and crickets coming from the women's restroom. These are the times we cherish, am I right ladies?

But among all the fun, there were some blatantly obvious signs that this event was more male-focused than not. To find out what they were, just read more.

As I made my way to registration before the keynote, I saw these girls. Not exactly "Booth Babes," not quite swimsuit models, but they did serve a purpose. They were pimping a new app called iPorn. I guess you could call them iPorn Girls?

After the keynote, as I was trying to find a place to plug in my Macbook Pro, I heard an extremely loud belch coming from a group of classy males to my right. After attempting to give the 'ole stinkeye, not one of the dudes posting it up along the wall would make eye contact. That's right guys, not in public.

Tech Dating 101: He Has Nude Photos on His Laptop

Dear geeksugar:

I just started dating this guy. He's really sweet, caring, and I feel like he could be "the one." Although something happened the other day that I feel really uncomfortable about. He was showing me some photos on his computer, most of them were of family and friends, but I could see mini previews to ones that were, shall I say, very x-rated. When he went to the restroom, I quickly looked at them to find photos of him and naked girls. I want to confront him about them, but don't want him to think I was snooping. And if they happened in the past, should I even be concerned?

First things first, don't panic. Guys are, well, "visual learners," so I wouldn't automatically go and dump the guy. But I'm sure you're still stunned at what you saw, and can't get over the fact that he may not be as prim and proper as you previously thought.

Now I'm not going to scold you for looking on his laptop and getting all up in his virtual business, because you did see the racy photo previews. The thing is, if this guy has been amazing to you, hasn't betrayed your trust, and has been a saint in every other way, then these photos could just be from a drunken night back in college. If you can't seem to get them off your mind, and it's affecting your relationship, then I would definitely ask him about them. Just seem curious rather than confrontational to see what he says. If he says they were taken years ago and he'll delete them if they bother you - great. If he says they were taken a few weeks ago and he likes taking photos of three-ways with girls - not so great.

Camera porn? Yes please. We're so used to checking out the gorgeous photographs that cameras take, that sometimes you don't stop to appreciate that the cameras themselves can be quite beautiful.

Those sleek little laptop sleeves I love so much? Great for going to an office or a coffee shop and back home again, but what about when you're traveling and need your power cord and accessories? I always take care to put my laptop in a bag, tucked away all secure, but when it comes to my cord and other peripherals I need to take with me, I unceremoniously toss them wherever they'll fit. This does nothing for my organizational needs! But this does: it turns out that Redmaloo, the makers of that really cool felt folding laptop case, make a companion piece: a cord and accessories clutch!

The case fits a mouse and your power block and cable snugly, and comes in pink, lime, orange, and gray, so you can mix or match with their laptop cases (not that you need it to buy this, obviously). Massachusetts Bill Karate Chops Minors' Access to Violent Games

Whether you know it or not, there is a storm-a-brewin in the video game industry. Recently, there has been new interest surrounding violence in video games. Does violence + video game = violent peeps in real life? Boston Mayor Thomas Menino seems to think so and is backing bill HB1423, aimed to block the purchase of violent video games to minors-as it would with pornography.

Although there has been no evidence or studies to prove a connection between violence in games and actual violence, Massachusetts officials met yesterday to discuss the bill. If it passes, it would make it illegal for persons under the age of 18 to purchase games with violent content. To see the details, just read more

Massachusetts House Bill 1423 would deem video games illegal for minors to purchase if the content matter:

"Is harmful to minors, if it is obscene or, if taken as a whole, it depicts violence in a manner patently offensive to prevailing standards in the adult community, so as to appeal predominantly to the morbid interest in violence of minors; is patently contrary to prevailing standards of adults in the county where the offense was committed. . . and lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value for minors."

Other states, including Utah and Louisiana attempted to pass similar laws, but were stopped cold as District Courts deemed the laws unconstitutional. As someone who loves video games, I think the responsibility lies with the family to regulate what games can or cannot be purchased, as they would music and movies. But what's your opinion? Should video games depicting violence be illegal for people under 18 to purchase?

Zambos and Siega's Mini Monster Tote is a laptop bag I'm making sad goo-goo eyes over on the Internet - I don't want to see what shameful thing I'd be reduced to if I actually saw it in real life.

The turquoise leather is what's doing it for me - it has that pop-becomes-a-neutral quality that's important for bags in general.

But look, if I got the tan one, I wouldn't exactly be complaining. Price? Way too scandalous to list here.
