Polaroid's Triumphant Battle Back From Extinction

I couldn't be happier to know that there will be another chance to pick up a Polaroid One Step and a packet of instant film next year. After Polaroid announced that the instant film camera would be put out to pasture back in 2008, there was an uprising of epic proportions - fans did not want to let go of the beloved medium. In a digital world, there's something comforting about capturing the moment with such a low tech and vintage device. Check out the death and subsequent revival of the Polaroid instant camera in this slideshow, then join our Vintage Geek group to share your favorite retro gadgets!

Victory Is Ours: Polaroid Announces Relaunch of Camera, Film

I once asked you if you would jump on board if Polaroid were revived - an overwhelming amount of you said yes. Well hold on to your hats, photo geeks, cause it's on its way! At a press conference today in Hong Kong, Polaroid announced that they will be re-launching the One Step camera and allowing The Impossible Project (a group of former Polaroid employees who have been working to revive the medium and who also released the last of the instant film to Urban Outfitters earlier this year) to produce a limited amount of instant black and white and color film in 2010. No more tears on those Polaroid notepads my friends, you'll get the real thing soon enough.

In addition to the exciting launch, Polaroid is releasing a limited edition Celebration Kit ($450) on Friday, October 16 for the ultimate instant camera connoisseur. The kit includes an original SX-70 camera, two collectible film packs, and a few other commemorative items. So - are you as excited about this news as I am?

Polaroid cameras may have gone the way of the dinosaur, but 89 percent of GeekSugar readers claim they'd buy a Polaroid camera if it hit the assembly line again. Seeking immediate gratification? There are a handful of simple ways to turn your digital photos into Polaroid-inspired pics instantly while the company's former employees champion the "Impossible Project" to bring instant film back. Check them out and start turning your regular prints into Polaroids immediately.

Urban Outfitters to Sell Last of Polaroid Film Starting Today

Have you been following the Impossible Project as closely as I have? The project, which consists of former Polaroid employees, is attempting to invent new instant film in the vein of the beloved camera.

Their latest coup is an amazing one: the Impossible Project acquired the last of Polaroid's instant film and camera kits and is going to sell them via Urban Outfitters, starting today. Of course, it's deadstock and very limited edition, and you'll have to go to one of the physical stores to get the film or kits.

To see the stores and dates that will have the Polaroid camera kits, just read more.

On Aug. 21, the stores in Vancouver, Los Angeles, and San Francisco will have it at 10 a.m. and at 1 p.m., Cambridge, MA, and the Broadway and 2nd Ave. NYC stores will have it. What's promising is that the graphic says these stores will have it "first," so maybe other locations will eventually get the film and kits, too.

Make Notes With Memories: The Polaroid Notepad

I have an unending well of sentimentality for Polaroids, whether they're really coming back or not.

Cue the Polaroid Notes ($15), a set of 20 notecards and envelopes. The images are sweet and dreamy, which is how I think we tend to remember Polaroids (rather than washed out and abrupt).

And if you still want to make your own Polaroids via modern technology, try the website Rollip or download Poladroid.

Create Polaroid Photos With the Website Rollip

I just love being able to transform a new photo into something that looks like it's from my grandmother's old photo box. I've already told you about Poladroid - the downloadable app that makes it quick and easy to make a photo look like a retro-chic Polaroid pic.

Well now there's a site called Rollip that is similar to Poladroid, but offers a few more customization options. There may be some extra steps involved, but it's free, and it allows you to choose from a variety of photo effects and select an artsy border design (with or without text).

Once your photo "develops," you can then download it, share it via email, Facebook, or MySpace and even purchase it as a real pic!

Found a cool website you want to tell people about? To learn how to post your favorite websites to our Website of the Day group, read more.

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

First of all, join the Website of the Day group.

Click the pink "Share" menu on the top left side of the page.

Choose "Blog" and "Regular Post."

Give your story a "Title."

Fill in the "Body" with a link to your favorite website and the reasons why you love it.

Click "Next."

Choose the audience for your story to "Website of the Day" in the dropdown menu.

Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Website of the Day").

Change channel to "Technology and Gadgets."

Fill in tag field with relevant tags.

Click "I’m done" to submit content.

So join the Website of the Day group and share information about all your favorite sites! Yours just might end up on the geeksugar homepage!

If Polaroid Is Revived, Will You Adopt It?

It was sad news when we first heard that Polaroid was halting production of its instant film, but as photography buffs who mourned, wasn't it partly our fault? I'm sure there are some shutterbugs who stayed loyal to film, but I would guess the majority of us have gone digital - an adoption that precipitated Polaroid's demise.

This January, hope returned when the company's former employees announced they were taking on the "Impossible Project" to bring instant film back into production. The New York Times caught up with the group, whose efforts are underway in Holland.

Lucky for those of us eager to get back to shaking our Polaroid pictures, the group is very eager to get going, and more importantly - confident that there will be buyers for Polaroid: "If everyone runs in one direction, it creates a niche market in the other,” one of the backers says.

So is he right? Will a generation used to skyrocketing megapixels embrace the retro film and actually buy and revitalize Polaroid, or do we just like the vintage memories, content to recreate it with services like Poladroid?

Will you?

Source

If Polaroid Is Revived, Will You Adopt It?

Polaroid Tea Towel Keeps Things Geeky in the Kitchen

Do you miss your gadgets when you're not in the kitchen (the gadgets other than your mixer and blender, that is)? Bring a piece of technology - vintage technology, no less - into the kitchen with the Polaroid Tea Towel ($18) by Red Velvet Art.

I have sort of thing for adorable tea towels (I'm looking into it), and these towels, with the Polaroid camera lovingly embroidered on and the blue rickrack around the border . . . oh yeah, these do it for me.

It also makes the wait for new Polaroid technology a little less agonizing, don't you think?
