Shakira's mantra doesn't always hold true with technology (who hasn't battled WiFi, a cell signal or less than logical download?), but most toolbar plugins offer sweet simplicity and easy access to the tools you need no matter where your surfing habits lead you.

The Google Toolbar 5 for Internet Explorer or Firefox puts a custom button to Gmail at your fingertips. You won't have to keep a window open and refresh it obsessively because you can get new message alerts, see previews of your mail and use Toolbar's search box to find any message no matter what page you're on.

PayPal Is Now Your Personal Online Shopping Assistant

Don't you love it when you're about to make an online purchase, and instead of wasting ten more minutes of your life pulling your credit card out and typing in numbers for payment and shipping, you see the little PayPal icon? Sweet relief! I'm so stoked when I can just log into PayPal and complete my transaction. In a move that's way too convenient for my online shopping problem, PayPal has introduced a plug-in so you can use PayPal every time and anywhere you shop online.

All you need is a PayPal account and to download the plug-in - with sites that do accept PayPal, it will automatically populate all your shipping and payment info when you click it in your browser. For sites that don't normally use PayPal, the plug-in generates Secure Cards, one-time use numbers that deduct from your debit card. Unfortunately for Mac users, the plug-in is not available yet, but Secure Cards are. Like I need to more reasons to shop.

OK, so I know aesthetics aren't everything, but even though I bought myself a nice-looking external hard drive to back up all my data, sometimes I just want to find a safe place to keep it out of the way and off my clean desk. Geek Tip: Adding Video and Audio to Adium

If you prefer using Adium as your all-in-one messaging application, you'll be happy to hear that there is now a plug-in that integrates video and audio chat into this IM client. The freeware MeBeam plug-in lets you start chatting with you contacts immediately by video when you click "Initiate MeBeam Videochat." According to lifehacker, Adium will create a web-based chatroom and send the URL to your contacts, who don't need the plug-in themselves. Not the greatest quality since it's still fairly new, but you can have up to fifteen people in a multiuser videochat, which is really neat.

Should AOL Allow People To See Your Location?

Gone are the days you can blow off anyone on your buddy list because you are "going out of town" because they just might be able to spy on your where-a-bouts. This weekend AOL unveiled it has launched a new plug-in that allows instant message users to see where people on their buddy lists are physically located. The plug-in will work by monitoring continuous wireless pulses emitted by all Wi-Fi transmitters and Wi-Fi-enabled computers, rather than more common satellite-based approach and will be available for free download, said the AP. The plug-in will be added to AIM's buddy list window called "Near Me" and will feature the names of any buddies who opt to share their locations and who are within a set distance from the AIM user. While I am pleased there is an opt-out option here I am still unsure if I think this is a necessary or responsible idea. How will we ever get out of anything if everyone knows where we are all the time?
