Yigal Azrouël designed his Fall '12 collection for a woman who is "fearless in her outlook and quiet in her confidence." Drawing from the spirit of Françoise Hardy, Yigal sent sophisticated, ladylike looks with an exotic twist down the runway. To put it simply, it was a luxurious mélange of plush raccoon-fur cossacks, long cashmere coats with leather-trimmed pockets, pebble-printed silk jumpsuits, snakeskin gloves, and one jaw-dropping laser-cut crepe leather gown. Add to the mix lambskin pants and structured leather jackets in a covetable palette of autumnal henna, bordeaux, and evergreen hues, and you've got a cold-weather wardrobe worth lusting after. As Yigal put it, this collection is all about "the unintentional beauty in mystery."

Trends: Ultra-luxe outwear, contoured hoods, reinvented wool silhouettes, and exotic textures.
Colors: Henna red, bordeaux purple, muted navy, pale forest green, and slick black-and-brown combos.
Key Piece: We love the juxtaposition of this floor-length black gown - precise laser-cut detail and daring proportions all in one go.
Accessories: Plush add-ons; two-tone fur and leather booties, leather-trimmed pockets, snakeskin gloves, and raccoon-fur hats.

Laura Werlin on the Pebble Beach Food and Wine Festival

Last weekend was the Pebble Beach Food and Wine Festival. Since we couldn't make it, we asked cheese expert Laura Werlin to give us a behind-the-scenes look! Here she discusses her seminars and provides some pointers on how to pair wine with her specialty, grilled cheese.
When you think of Pebble Beach, you probably think of golf. But not me. All I can think of is that it’s the home of the utterly, completely, amazing over-the-top Pebble Beach Food & Wine event. The fourth annual extravaganza, which featured chefs like Tom Colicchio, Anne Burrell, Tim Love, Daniel Boulud, Stephen Pyles, Christopher Kostow, Chris Cosentino, Michael Chiarello, Gary Danko, Ming Tsai, and approximately 85 others, took place over a sunny weekend in April. I was lucky enough to be one of the presenters to do what I do - say cheese, of course. I gave two seminars, each with a different theme. One was grilled cheese and wine pairing (yep, you read that right) and the other was cheese paired with the über impressive wines of Oregon winery Domaine Serene.

For the cheese and Domaine Serene presentation, I paired six American cheeses with five wines that included Chardonnay, Pinot, Rosé and Syrah.

Thoroughly Modern, Perfectly Patterned Pottery

Does the word pottery conjure up images in your head of sandy-toned, roughly glazed pots lined up on a folding table at a crafts fair? Modern day pottery is largely exempt from such humdrum clay manifestations. Thanks to companies like Heath Ceramics, which has been creating clean, beautiful pottery designs for over half a century, and modern-day potters like Jonathan Adler, pottery's significance in the 21st century cannot be questioned.

Speaking of Adler, his Relief Drip Ceramic Pendant Lamp ($300, top row, left) is a wonderful way to introduce the beauty of pottery in an unexpected place in your home - the ceiling. Unglazed translucent porcelain that emits a warm (and surprisingly bright) glow. Inspired by seeds, barnacles, pebbles, and other natural wonders, each prototype pot is thrown by Jonathan Adler. The Relief Drip Ceramic Pendant emits a soft, warm glow.

I also can't forget the lovely Spun Vase ($175, bottom row, middle left) from Heath Ceramics. Made in a limited quantity of 150, the stripes on the single stem vase are created with an etching tool, which strips away the top layer of glaze. Hurry - this vase is only available until the first of October!

Karim Rashid, World-Renowned Tape Dispenser

World-renowned designer Karim Rashid knows no boundaries. The man has designed everything from bathtubs for couples to an Athenian hotel to a dustbuster. Come across any product with his name on it and you can expect it to be curvy, sensual, contemporary, and very likely pink - one of only two colors that he wears. His latest pièce de résistance doesn't have as much sex appeal as a Greek getaway or an erotic spa tub, but it is unique nonetheless: 3M has commissioned Rashid to reimagine two of its hallmark products, the Post-It note and Scotch tape.

The Pebble Collection by Karim includes a pop-up Post-It note dispenser ($10.50) and a Scotch tape dispenser ($8) with river rock shapes, made of contemporary, glossy plastic. The designs are weighted - very much so, in fact - to make for facile, one-handed tape- and adhesive-note-retrieval. Most might not want to "splurge" on such basic office supplies, but if you're the type who tapes away and jots down notes all day, or the type who likes to show off to co-workers, it might make your day more pleasurable. Plus, they're much cheaper than Karim's Veuve Clicquot Love Seat, which would cost you $10,000.
