Website of the Day: Button Hero

Guitar Hero and Rock Band are fun party games when you are surrounded by friends and a kit, but what's a geek to do when you're at your computer and supposed to be working, but feel the need to rock out? Put on your headphones and test your Button Hero skills and you'll have the answer.

The online game (I use the term game lightly) features a Last FM player and a single button you are supposed to rhythmically click along to the music. You just start up the tunes and then tap along with the space bar. As you click you'll be treated to encouraging messages. It's silly and pointless, but it's supposed to be.

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

First of all, join the Website of the Day group.
Click the pink "Share" menu on the top left side of the page.
Choose "Blog" and “Regular Post.”
Give your story a “Title.”
Fill in the “Body” with a link to your favorite website and the reasons why you love it.
Click “Next."
Choose the audience for your story to “Website of the Day” in the drop-down menu
Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Website of the Day").
Change channel to “Technology and Gadgets.”
Fill in tag field with relevant tags.
Click “I’m done” to submit content.

So join the Website of the Day group and share information about all your favorite sites! Yours just might end up on the geeksugar homepage!

Website of the Day: Kongregate

Time totally stole my Website of the Day when they listed Kongregate as one of the top 50 websites of the year. On a side note, did you happen to see a little site called PopSugar on that list? Maybe you've heard of it?

Anyway, I was going to tell you to add Kongregate to your bookmarks toolbar right now for those times that you just can't bear to sit there and analyze one more excel spreadsheet, or crunch one more number. With over five thousand flash based games submitted by indie developers, there's something for everyone to dive into: from typing games to shooters and more. My favorite game today? Super Crazy Guitar Maniac Deluxe 2 - it's like Guitar Hero for my keyboard! And if that's not enough, there are ways to earn cash and prizes. To see how, read more.

If you're a developer, you can earn cash if your game is the highest rated by months end, plus there are points to be earned by players to customize your profile pages, and up your status within the community. And of course, that's the best prize of all.

It seems all geeks love Indiana Jones. Maybe it's his fly hat, maybe it's his guy-next-door yet heroic persona, and maybe it's just because he's a professor of archeology and an adventurer (read: Geek God). Combine that collective love for Jones with Legos and you get an awesome Lego Indiana Jones Adventure, a free (and fun!) flash game I can't get enough of this week. The game takes you on a journey from America to a Peruvian temple. You "play" a Lego Indiana figure and search for treasure and avoid the perils of the jungle.

More Seniors Are Taking the Plunge Into Tech

I may have a game-loving gramps, but he doesn't really venture into the Internet without a little assistance. I'll cut him a break since he's in his eighties, but a recent study shows that more and more seniors are taking the plunge into Facebook, blogs, and tech in general than ever before. Stats show that the senior population (age 65 and over) that uses the Internet has tripled since 2005.

Back in the day, it used to be nearly impossible for the older set to get a handle on tech, but it seems that as times progress and technology is a little easier to grasp, senior citizens aren't afraid to jump in and get their feet wet online. Even if your dad still needs help with his WiFi, you can give him props for at least having an email address. Do the seniors in your life use technology? Hello Kitty Online Launches!

Do you love Hello Kitty still? Or are you maybe looking for a less violent online role-playing multiplayer game? Get both with the newly launched Hello Kitty Online (currently in private beta, but they are apparently reviewing my application, so cross your fingers for me). It's definitely a psychedelic candy-colored overload, so proceed with caution. From Joi Ito, you can roam Hello Kitty Online's adorable world of the Flower Kingdom and the Sanrio version of the world's cities, build a dream house, and earn and spend kitty dollars.

Monsters are supposed to be involved in some way, though I have a hard time imagining how - the Cookie Monster, maybe? Sign up, get sucked in, and see if you can't live with all those pastels. Overly cute screencaps are below.

Microsoft To Offer Online Gaming For Windows Users

Microsoft has announced it will extend its online gaming service for its Xbox consoles to all those gamers who use Windows PCs to play games over the Internet. News that is sure to please gamers like singer Natasha Bedingfield (seen here) and fabulous geeky gamer girls like Ingrid Diaz of Play Girlz.

Xbox Live, Microsoft’s online gaming network that serves some six million Xbox users, is scheduled on May 8 to open its basic and premium features to online PC gamers. Live gamers will be able to easily find and play supported titles online with their friends across a Windows computer or an Xbox 360. Debuting on May 8, 2007, with the launch of the Windows Vista version of the Xbox blockbuster “Halo 2,” Games for Windows - LIVE will connect Windows gamers to over six million gamers already in the Xbox LIVE community. Then, launching in June, “Shadowrun” will for the first time connect Windows gamers with Xbox 360 players in cross-platform matches using a single service. “UNO,” releasing later in 2007, will also support cross-platform play between Windows and Xbox 360.
