Motherboard Dish Towel: Love It or Leave It?

My geek crafts have been put to shame, people: Check out this embroidered motherboard dish towel a crafty blogger created. Even though there are many photos and details of how it's done, I can't even look at it without my jaw dropping open.

The only thing I don't love about this dish towel is that it's not yet being produced. Open up an Etsy shop, please! Of course, do you think if you hung this dish towel in your kitchen, people would get what it was? Would it matter to you? Discuss.

Love It Or Leave It: Motherboard PCB Bracelet

I'm a sucker for geek jewelry so I can't help but love this Motherboard PCB Bracelet. It was handmade by llama13 from the Instructables community. She used drill bits, a hacksaw, a hand saw file, pliers and a dust mask to cut up the motherboard, file the pieces into small, jewel-sized chunks, and string them together into this bracelet. Would you wear it?

The Martha Stewart Geek Health Tip I Can't Get Behind

Martha Stewart may be one of my idols, but a health tip she included in the January issue of her namesake magazine, Martha Stewart Living, has me disagreeing with her pretty profusely.

Here's what she says:
"Alongside every one of my computers, I have a pitcher of mineral water infused with lemon, lime, orange, or cucumber and mint. I find that I drink more if the pitcher is there as a reminder and I can freely pour a glass, rather than opening bottle after bottle of water during the day."

Martha, really, open pitchers of water right alongside your computers? Sure, you should drink plenty of water, but putting a large, open vessel of liquid right next to your computer is just inviting damage (don't those pitchers look foreboding rather than refreshing?). Careful as you may be, it only takes a little nudge to fry a keyboard or worse, a motherboard.

Unless you can afford to replace expensive tech easily, do as I do, and drink lots of water - just put a lid on it.

On we go with the Best of 2008 series! Being a geek and being crafty seem to go hand in hand; both take ingenuity. Even if you're a big-time techie but can't sew, glue, or cook to save your life, everyone still appreciates a rad geeky DIY project.

I've narrowed it down to my fave projects: the Mario Star Nano Case, my Halloween Rick-Roll costume, the papercraft phenomena of Cubeecrafts, frosted Tetris brownies, the embroidered motherboard dish towel, and lastly, the embroidered text message.

Getting the Scoop From Steve - Q&A Session

We got a chance to talk directly to Steve and his crew during a Q&A session at the end of the presentation. Here are some insights to the new MacBooks as well as some other burning questions the group had for him:

Q: What is the status of 17-inch MacBook Pro?
A: The 17-inch MacBook Pro is still available, and is in the process of being refreshed.

Q: Will there be an option for matte screens or are you going with glass screens all the way?
A: Glass all the way. We ran into hesitation with iMacs, but it's just so much better. It's like night and day.

Q: What about Blu-ray compatibility?
A: "Blu-ray is a bag of hurt," Steve said. Unfortunately, licensing of Blu-ray technology is complex, and Apple is just waiting for Blu-ray to take off in the marketplace and lower cost of drives. Solution is iTunes HD.

Q: Is the new Nvidia graphics card exclusively yours?
A: Apple is the first to take it to market.

Q: Weight differences in the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros?
A: The new MacBook is 4.5lbs, and the MacBook Pro is 5.5lbs.

Q: Will there be any Netbooks on the market soon?
A: We'll see how it goes.

Q: Did Apple design the motherboard for these products in-house?
A: All in-house. It's pretty high-tech stuff.

Q: In regards to the new touchpad: Do touchscreens not make sense on laptops?
A: We've experimented with it, but so far it hasn't made a whole lot of sense for us to have a touchscreen on a laptop.

Carrie Bradshaw Learns to Email and IM . . . Slowly

My heart beats a little faster every day as we near May 30, the day the Sex and the City movie comes out. To that end, I've been posting the geekiest SATC clips to prepare, including everything from the motherboard failure to Carrie's Googling misadventures!

Our fearless and fiercely intelligent women proved they can tackle anything in the show, especially technology - but even a Mac girl like Carrie Bradshaw was mystified from time to time when she dove into a new geeky task. It's crazy to see now, but Carrie was pretty freaked out by email and IM when she first got it (even though this was in 2001!). Watch her ridiculous reaction to Aidan coming online. . .

Binary Birthday Cards: Totally Geeky or Geek Chic?

When you're a geek you're a geek all the way from your first motherboard to your last coding day. But does that mean you should celebrate your birthday geek style? I'd be happy to receive one of these handmade Binary Birthday Cards, $2.50, but I'm not sure my friends would feel the same way. What do you think?
