Moment of Geek: Apple Computer Mailbox

I should have turned this into a guess the gadget because I never would have guessed in a million years that someone would actually take their old G4 case and turn it into a mailbox-but then again if it's just wasting space and not being used, you might as well get creative! Featured on Geekologie, this pretty sleek Apple mailbox puts traditional red mailboxes to shame. How long do you think it will last before someone tries to a) beat it with a hockey stick or b) steal it cause they think it's valuable? When I was growing up, any mailboxes that were shiny and new got destroyed as soon as they were put up. Let's just hope this one is in a safe neighborhood free of bats, sticks, stones and PC lovers! As chief designer for Bling My Thing, Kellie created this design for the iPhone called "Rainbow Boogie," which does in fact come in a rainbow of colors! Moment of Geek: Giant DS

If it weren't for KadBunny I might have missed this Jumbotron DS, which is quite honestly the largest Nintendo DS I've ever seen.

It's essentially a Nintendo DS hooked up to two Tablet PC screens, using an FPGA in between to do some translation magic. Pen input from the Tablet PC screens is sent back to the DS. It can also dump screenshots to a PC via serial port. The device cost its maker about $600 to make and includes two Gateway M275 screens, LVDS modules (Advantech PCM-205), Digilent S3BOARD a Nintendo DS and a Wacom pen. Yeah, that's a lot of geek talk, but check out how cool it is.

Today's Moment of Geek comes to us courtesy of FitSugar's friend, who has a custom cake business, Cakes By 2 Moms, in the Bay Area. What I like about these edible geek treats in comparison to the oodles of video game cakes we've seen, is the fact that they look like something I'd like to eat. They aren't covered in inches of fondant, but they still tout some serious geek cred and creative designs. Can you name all the Mac navigation controls and functions keys on the cupcakes?

Moment of Geek: Vintage Typewriter Softie

Last week's moment of geek champion the Computer Monster might look at this cute and creative typewriter softie and see lunch, but I see a fun geeky craft project that deserves kudos and a permanent place on a desktop. Its creator, a crafter that goes by the name of blueblythe, says it is modeled after her boyfriend's great-great-grandfather's typewriter. "It took me several weeks of non stop sewing to finish," says blueblythe. "The felt is hand dyed and the details are embroidered. I added some real screws that I tarnished in vinegar. The roller rotates so that a piece of paper can be added with some typed words on it."

Moment of Geek: The Real Computer Monster

Every couple of days we run across items so geeky we can't even begin to explain them. We politely refer to them as "Moments of Geek," as in a short fact, tidbit, video or picture that's not worthy of a whole feature story, but is worthy of a moment of your time.

Today's example comes to you courtesy of Muppet creator Jim Henson, who created the "computer monster" sketch in the early 1960s. The skit was allegedly developed for IBM and was such a hit that Henson redid it later. Word is the computer-eating-monster is a predecessor of the infamous Cookie Monster, who you might remember is more blue than green.

Moment of Geek: CPU Desk

Talk about a geeky DIY project! A guy named Matt spent the last couple of months collecting scrap CPUs and creating an elaborate CPU desk. The project began this spring when Matt and his co-workers started upgrading a customer's computer and realized several hundred Itanium CPUs, in perfect working order, were going to be scrapped. Inspired by a computer chip trivet article, he decided to improve his desktop by tiling it with the old CPUs.

"I’m well pleased with the result – this is probably one of the better-looking things that I’ve ever made," Matt says on his blog. "The chips glow nicely in the light of the monitor, when working in a dark room at night (shows dirt badly - I had to take the glass out again to clean those chips in front of the screen one more time). I had thought about putting some sort of lighting under the glass (LEDs or cold-cathodes), but I’m glad I didn’t. I think it works just fine as it is."

Moment of Geek: Lego Gibson Fit For Guitar Heroes

Knowing how much geeks love LEGOs and how much everyone loves the Guitar Hero game, it seems natural that a combination of the two is destined for greatness.

Enter this homemade model of a Gibson Explorer that is made up entirely of LEGO blocks. Best part about it, is the device works as a controller for the Guitar Hero game. It features an added extra large scratch-plate for style and some serious geek cred.

Moment of Geek: Students Create Giant Tetris Game

In need of an early weekend lift? A pack of Russian students created a life sized Tetris game by running through a huge building and playing with the lights. I kind of hope this video involves an editing trick or two. If not, that means someone spent a long time planning it out. It's almost as fun as the time Homer used his supreme Tetris skills to pack his car. Almost.
