Summery Laptop Bags: It's Time To Brighten Up

Tis the season of carry-on bags, quick weekend road trips and summery totes, so lugging a heavy computer bag can be a real pain. I've found the easiest way to travel with my laptop, or even transport it with me to and from the office, is to carry it in a slim sleeve, which I sneak into my larger purse. Simple, black sleeves are so boring so after I read about the fun new laptop bags from Puma, I went on a hunt for colorful, bright sleeves that will give my sweet little lappy a fun makeover. Right now I have my heart set on this orange Work Out Laptop Bag by Tucano because it's small enough to fit inside my purse, but also has a handle in case I want to carry it alone.

For the most part, laptop sleeves and thin cases are made of incredibly stretchy and thin nylon, which can fit most laptop sizes, but if you have an extremely small notebook or a larger computer I suggest you bring it with you when you're shopping or measure it before you leave the house. Also, if you start using a sleeve make sure you put your computer to sleep or turn it off before you slip it in your bag for a long ride or flight. Laptops can get pretty hot and grumpy if they are stored in a bag for too long because the fan can't let air out. Sleeves and thin laptop case prices range from $20 to 100.

Fancy That: A Neoprene Laptop Bag That Doesn't Say Wetsuit

As a lady, and worse, a lady who cares about the design of her computer as much as the design of her clothing, you know how hard it can be to find a nice-looking laptop bag. Sometimes I'll be on a roll, posting a pretty laptop bag almost every day, but I hunt for those suckers! For every gorgeous, slouchy leather laptop bag, like this one by Hayden Harnett, there's scads of ugly, ugly bags.

Generally, it's the fabric that brings the tone down; for some reason, some manufacturers think that our laptops will be the target of bullets, battering rams, and other things the army - and not a girl going to work - needs to worry about.

Neoprene used to be on my list of offensive fabrics, but I have to reconsider this material because of this Rose on Red Laptop Bag ($45). The fabric loses its industrial-ish, masculine edge with a rose stamped into its side, but on the same token, the near-imperceptibility of the image prevents it from screaming "I'm a chick!" Well played, bag people.

Fly the Coop With an Aviary Laptop Bag

Riddle me this, is the bird trend over or is it a new classic? Well, whatever, because these Aviary Laptop Bags, with their birdcage print, are too good to pass up over fear that the trend is done for.

The laptop case (the squarish one on the left) is $50, while the laptop bag is $55, and each is made of PVC-coated cotton, so your bird-loving self can wipe it clean.

Love It or Leave It? Prada Laptop Bag

I must be suffering from Spring fever or something because I can't seem to pull myself away from these wild and colorful prints! Last week, I showed you the exotic leopard laptop case by Betsey Johnson which a majority of you loved and a few of you hated. Nonetheless, I am carrying on my leopard streak with this Prada laptop/messenger bag which was featured on Purse Page. First things first, let's ignore the ginormous $1512 price tag (and the fact it's made from real pony hair) and try to focus on its positive. It is in fact Prada, which translates to leather, luxury, style and quality. And it has an adjustable shoulder strap which measures up to 52" which is kinda nice. I guess since it's the real deal it's somewhat appealing to me. What are your thoughts?

Long And Lean Saturn Laptop Bags

These Saturn bags may not be as cute as the summery laptop totes and sleeves but if you're already starting to think about fall, then they may make the perfect laptop accessory.

The Saturn vinyl laptop bag features a horizontal tube structure on both sides and has a magnetic snap to keep the top closed. Each bag is ideal for most 12"-17" laptops and comes in both black and red. Depending on the size of your laptop, I'm not sure how many other gadgets you'd be able to fit in this bag. I guess if you have a 12" laptop, you may be able to squeeze your wallet and cell phone in it as well. These bags are somewhat funky, but for $98, I'd rather hold out for a leather one.

Hayden-Harnett's Ibiza Laptop Bag: Exciting As Its Namesake!

I'm all worked up over a laptop bag again, and there's not even a politically incorrect amount of leather involved! Hayden-Harnett's beautiful Ibiza laptop bag is a tote after my traveling heart.

Crafted of red nylon and with leather trim, the Ibiza has enough room for your laptop and other travel things, and I love that there's regular handles, plus a long strap to wear it around your body, messenger style.

It also purportedly converts into a smaller silhouette, which to me means a bag to take out with you once you reach your final destination and shake that computer out of your bag and out of your hair. And maybe I'm just jaded by the $2,000 price tags I've seen on some luxurious laptop bags lately, but $200 for a great bag is sounding temptingly reasonable right about now.

GoGo Voyage Leather Laptop Rolling Bag: Love It or Leave It?

So we've got to revisit the whole rolling laptop bag debate (which was a pretty much even split) because as much as I try to dismiss them, this GoGo Voyage rolling laptop bag is stuck in my head.

With Balenciaga-like details, beautiful leather in pink or black, the rolling part of it might not be an issue because it actually retracts to become a tote. It also has a cellphone pocket and leather makeup bag, but the fact that it's $550 might also make my thinking about buying this a nonissue.

If I carried it around like a regular bag all day, and then pulled out the trolley handle when I descend into the airport, I think I could actually take rolling bags from dorky to jet set. Am I alone in this?

Hayden-Harnett: Giving Me a Heart Attack With the Catalina Laptop Bag

At the risk of sounding predictable: I need this. Hayden-Harnett is obviously slowly trying to drive me nuts, because first it was the Ibiza bag, and now this, the leather Catalina laptop bag.

It costs a painful $437, but look at it. Sumptuous leather, a crossbody strap (which makes it look chic, not messenger bag-ish), and a slouchy style that announces to the world, "World! I have fabulous laptop bags!"

Is Your Laptop Killing Your Back? Get Some Relief

Last week I read a post on FabSugar about how you shouldn't carry a bag that's more than 10 percent of your body weight and I knew I was in trouble.

Geek girls can't help it - it's the laptops! Since the average weight of a laptop is about 5 pounds, we're usually around halfway to that 10 percent mark - and as women, we've got all our purse essentials in there as well. Add on some luxurious fabric like leather, and BAM! Back-break city.

That's why sometimes it's not even a question of laptop sleeve vs. laptop bag; if you're using a sleeve in a bigger bag, that's going to be heavy. If you're using a laptop bag that holds other things, that's going to be heavy, too. We can't win!

Except, of course, we can. Here are a few tips for your next laptop bag, if you're starting to feel the weight of your world on your shoulders! To see the tips, just read more.

As Fab says, you can look for a bag that's not in leather (bummer, but at least leather trim is OK), and the straps make all the difference. If you're going to wear something over your shoulder or messenger style, look for a wide, padded strap.
Sadly, as much as it defies efficiency, the problem may lie in having one bag to hold everything. One of my co-workers carries her handbag separately and her laptop in a laptop backback, which she says solved her back problems. Holding your regular (lightweight, of course) handbag in one hand and your laptop in a slim, lightweight bag in the other is an alternative, too.
And there is also the dreaded bag on wheels. Thankfully, there are few that aren't too terrible to look at, and they offer the ultimate break for your back. I like this leather, studded GoGo Voyage one.
