Have You Ever Had Your Information or Identity Stolen?

I couldn't believe it when I read on SFGate that it is very common for major websites like MySpace and MSNBC to be attacked and hacked, and how there's no way for users to know. Just this month, Israeli security firm Finjan uncovered a server full of consumer information, including social security numbers, bank account info, recorded keystrokes from online shopping in Malaysia.

Even though I'm tech-savvy and think I'm being careful online, I'm also totally paranoid sometimes that one false click or download will lead to a drained bank account or worse. In fact, I have several friends and family members who've experienced this - have you?

Cybercrime and drug trade are arguably two of the most talked about and elusive types of crime because both are incredibly hard to catch and measure. While drug trade has been glamorized in the media for being a quick and dramatic way to make money (think Showtime's Weeds), identity theft and cybercrime in general have become increasingly common and lucrative. Has cybercrime surpassed drug trade in terms of profitability, or is drug trade still the top illegal money maker?

YouTube Ordered to Shell Out Viewer Info

If you've ever checked out YouTube clips from The Daily Show and The Colbert Report (among many others), your information may soon be released to Viacom - they've been granted access to private user data to find out how many people are watching!

Part of a copyright infringement lawsuit, Google was ordered to release the deets about how many times copyrighted clips are played, and who's watching to determine if damages are owed to Viacom.

Viacom claims that Google knew about the infringements and could do more to stop it. Although the Goog was opposed to handing over the 12 terabytes of data (that's a lot), saying that info should be kept private, Viacom assures us that they will proceed with caution. Here's more:

Any data provided will be used exclusively for the purpose of proving our case against YouTube and Google (and) will be handled subject to a court protective order and in a highly confidential manner.

Thoughts of anonymity and identity theft come to my paranoid mind when companies are forced to hand over user information, but does this case make you think twice before using YouTube if your info and viewing history (no matter how delicately handled) are available for others to see? Absent Minded? Decorate Your Cell With A Cuff

If you've lost your cell phone before you're not alone. In fact, an estimated 600,000 cell phones will be reported lost or stolen this year. If that phone ends up in someone else's hands, you open yourself up to identity theft, a massive bill and if you happen to be Lindsay Lohan, some serious gossip.

The Strap Ya won't exactly restrict you from losing your cell because it's too small to actually cuff on to you, but it might serve as a reminder. Or a warning to your fellow cell phone bling fans that you're, well, kinda gansta. As with the best gadgets, this one isn't available in the US, unless you can translate the website.

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

First of all, join the Cell Phone Bling Group
Click "Create and Share!" on the left hand side
Choose "Blog"
Give your photo a Title
Leave the category as "general"
Change the channel to "technology and gadgets"
Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Cell Phone Bling")
Click on the "Add Image" link below the "body" box
A popup window will happen - click on "Browse" to find your image on your computer
Once you have the image chosen, click "Submit"
The popup will show you your image, choose size: "normal" - if you want, you can give it a title (which will show up as a caption)
Click "Insert" and the popup will go away
Your "body" box will now have some text in it. Leave it as is. If you want to add some text before the picture, do it before the code that has appeared.
Click Submit

So join the Cell Phone Bling Group and start posting your great photos! Yours just might end up on the geeksugar homepage!
