The Flip Ultra SD Video Cam vs. the New Nano

Now that the new iPod Nano is here, we're all elated at the fact that it features a larger, 2.2-inch LCD display and a built-in FM radio tuner, but the best part has got to be the included video camera. Being the owner of a Flip Video Camera - which is pocket-sized and very user friendly - I was tempted to see if the video quality on the new Nano is comparable to the Flip. The NewTeeVee crew decided to put both to the test in a side-by-side comparison.

As you'll see, the Flip quality is much better than the Nano, but if you were to compare the Nano to some cell phone video cameras, the Nano would win. Considering the fact that the 8GB Nano (which records up to eight hours of footage) only costs $149, it's not too shabby for a camera that you can easily put in your purse or back pocket - and hey, it even plays music!

Oh Apple, how can I ever quit you? As much as I love my Apple, I can get a little frustrated when it releases a great product, then comes out with an even better one just a few months later. How can I ever keep up?! This fact is especially true when it comes to iPods. We've seen so many iterations of the famous MP3 player hit the shelves, that you may have forgotten where it all started. Which Apple Announcement Are You the Most Excited About?

It was a busy day in SF yesterday with all eyes on the "It's Only Rock and Roll" event. Not only did Steve Jobs made his triumphant, black turtlenecked return to the keynote stage after taking time off for his health, but iTunes 9 was introduced, and then there were the iPods. Oh, the video and FM tuner enabled iPods. Plus, who could forget the monster capacity bump to 160GB on the iPod Classic and new candy-colored iPod Shuffles? My head is spinning.

Personally, I'm pretty excited about the iPod Nano's video function (which shoots at VGA quality 640x480), as well as the integrated Nike + pedometer. I mean, hello - a geek's gotta stay in shape! Now share your favorites - which Apple announcement are you most excited about?

Steve Jobs, a New Nano, and Cheaper, More Colorful Shuffles!

Where do I begin?! This morning at Apple's "It's Only Rock and Roll" Event here in San Francisco, it was all about the music (a new and improved iTunes) and the iPod (new shuffles, a better iPod Classic, and a new Nano with a builtin video camera to compete with the Flip). Sites like Gizmodo and Engadget were there to catch all of the live coverage, so here's a quick recap . . . And yes, Steve Jobs opened the keynote to receive a standing ovation from the audience.

The new iPod Nano is here! Boasting a camera that will capture video (with sound) and still images, the new Nano will replace that clunky video cam you used to lug around. Available today in a variety of bright colors, the fifth generation Nano will cost $149 for the 8GB and $179 for the 16GB.

The iPod classic is still going strong. Apple has just bumped its capacity to 160GB for the same price as the previous 120GB version, $249. That's a whole lotta tunes.

The teeny iPod shuffle is now available in fun colors like green, blue, or pink, with the original black and silver devices still available as well. They will be priced at $59 for the 2GB model, and $79 for the 4GB model.

New Nanos to Be Announced Next Week

As the third-gen iPhone specs and features rumors continue to swirl, I can at least pass on some Apple product news that may come to fruition.

I ran into a tipster during the fun E3 festivities today who told me that Apple will not only be announcing a new iPhone during their WWDC keynote on Monday but a new iPod Nano as well. Unfortunately I couldn't get any more details beyond that, but considering the latest iPod Shuffle is extremely tiny, I don't think it's a far cry to say the new Nano will be smaller as well (well at least slimmer).

iHandstand: Making iPod Movie Watching Easier Since 2008

I caught the iHandstand ($25) on Holycool yesterday and had to wonder: does it really make watching movies on your Nano easier?

I suppose it could. One problem with watching movies on your Nano is that you need to hold it sideways to view, and after a few minutes your hands get sweaty, or you just get sick of holding it.

The iHandstand takes care of that business for you. Just prop this bad boy up, and your precious Nano is cupped in its acrylic hands so you can watch in comfort. Now I just need some magnifying glasses to see the screen. . .
