It's a well known fact that the iPhone and the iPod Touch are becoming full-on competitors to the traditional gaming platform. With thousands of games available to download and play at the touch of the screen, it's easier than ever to keep yourself entertained wherever you are. But the one thing I can't see myself doing is playing Nintendo DS games on my iPhone.

Unlike Super Mario Bros. for the iPhone, here's a classic game that you can play without having to perform several software hacks to get it to work. Developed by Deron Dantzler, this Safari-compatible Duck Hunt game lets you shoot down ducks with your fingertips (so you can put those giant red guns away).

Remember last year's announcement that the Robin Hood/serial killer show Dexter would be coming out as a video game? There were no console announcements then, but here comes a game for one of the most portable: The Dexter will have an iPhone game, being released this Summer to the App Store.
You'll use the accelerometer to control Dexter, assuming controlling means killing the bad guys.

With all the fabulous features on the iPhone, you'd think there would be a section filled with games, but weren't not that lucky.
Thankfully a company called Knibble has come to the rescue by creating games specifically for the iPhone, which don't require several software hacks to work like Mario.
Just navigate your iPhone to iphone.knibble.com and choose from games like Sudoku, Bejeweled, and Tic Tac Toe to play for free.

Yesterday, I got an early look at the newest games slated to hit the iPod Touch and iPhone this Fall and Winter. I was pretty impressed with the graphics and low learning curve it took just to pick up and play these newest games, but to be honest, they're going to have to compete with Spore Origins for my coveted iPhone play time! New titles include an awesome mobile version of Need for Speed, which looked like a blast to play, as well as a cute platformer called Rolando that has your character rolling along a course, which was totally reminiscent of the super-cute PSP game I loved called LocoRoco.

Although Steve announced its release yesterday at the Let's Rock presentation, I got a chance to play with the newest game to hit the App Store at the Spore Release party last week. Spore Origins officially launched for the iPod Touch and iPhone on Monday and comes in at a cool $10 for your gaming pleasure.
Although the full version of Spore on your Mac or PC will take you all the way through Cell to Space stages, Spore Origins is condensed down into 30 levels in the Cell stage only (which was one of my faves anyway).

As a child of the eighties, my life revolved around things like Rainbow Brite, New Kids On the Block, crimped hair, She-Ra and a game called Simon. If you weren't a part of the Simon generation, it was this giant plastic round memory that consisted of four large colored buttons — red, blue, green and yellow. The game would start by lighting up one color, and you'd repeat it back, and then a longer, more difficult color sequence would ensue.

I am not going to deny the fact that there are a lot of exciting tools on the iPhone, but I must admit, it's announcements like this that make me thank my lucky stars that I have a shiny and new iPhone. Brace yourselves: word on the net is that there is a new Nintendo Entertainment System emulator application on Google Code that comes with games like Super Mario Bros and The Legend of Zelda. The emulator has a few glitches and requires several software hacks to work so use it at your own risk.

Wish you could play some of your favorite iPhone games with friends on Facebook? Well this past weekend at the South by Southwest (SXSW) conference in Austin, TX, Facebook announced Facebook Connect for the iPhone. There are already nine Facebook-friendly apps in iTunes store, with more to come.
