I was a little irritated when Apple didn't include a dock for the iPhone 3G. That, the $30 price tag, and general laziness are the reasons I still haven't bought one. I've been able to improvise when I need one, but these DIY instructions on how to make your own cardboard iPhone dock have made my day.

Log iPhone Dock: Love It or Leave It?

My affinity for wood gadget accessories has come to this: an iPhone dock that looks like a log.

Though it's not as sleek as most iPhone docks usually are, I think it's kinda hot. The log dock ($68) is pretty organic, and not just in looks - made from real cedar, it must smell pretty lovely - but watch out for splinters! And besides, it's loads less creepy than the last wooden iPhone dock I posted.

OK group, it's time to rumble with your opinions on this chunk o' wood. Would you plug your iPhone into this? (P.S. - It's compatible with all other iPods too, except for the shuffle.)

Woven Polycarbonate iPhone Case: Love It or Leave It?

Another Cute Stocking-Worthy iPod Dock

I know, I know, it still might seem a bit early to be thinking about Christmas gifts, but after posting one cute iPod dock that would make a good stocking stuffer, I had to add this funky option to the list.

The Boombox Dock Speaker ($18) is compatible with most iPods and the iPhone, and is less than three inches long. It's totally retro and inexpensive - I love it!

United Airlines Charges For Bags, But Will Charge Your iPod

This makes me a little less bitter at United for charging $15 per checked bag: the airline is installing iPod and iPhone docks on its airplanes. Not only will you be able to charge your battery at your seat, you'll be able to scroll through your music and videos from the seat back's screen! Don't watch from that silly little screen, watch from behind somebody's head!

The first few flights to boast the Apple connectivity will be transatlantic, and will sadly be for first-and business-class passengers. That had better not last, or my forgiveness for the checked-bag fee will quickly depart.

Will the New Droid Give the iPhone a Run For Its Money?

The new Motorola Droid from Verizon has been all over the headlines lately. From its iPhone-bashing commercial to the announcement that the new device will be released on Nov. 6 - and now the latest news: Droid is available for pre-order - Droid is everywhere!

I predict soon we'll see a wave of accessories to rival those for the iPhone; Motorola's site already features a multimedia docking station and dashboard holder.

Got $100? TomTom GPS For iPhone Launches in App Store

Finding your way with your iPhone just got better: TomTom has launched its GPS navigation app for the iPhone today.

The app costs $100, so it's not a capricious download, but it is from a respected name in GPS devices, TomTom, and features turn-by-turn directions.

It's probably a boon for those in the market for a dashboard GPS device for their car, since the price is pretty comparable to a separate device (sans a dock or charger, of course).

Geek Tip: Add the Date to Your Top Nav Bar

Do you ever ask people around you what the date is, even though you have like, five applications available that will tell you? Not only do I have iCal in my dock, but iGoogle (which I have open all day), and my iPhone can all tell me the date at the click or push of a button. Call me lazy, but sometimes when I'm feverishly typing along, I don't want to stop and check to make sure my dates are right. So here's a shortcut for you Mac users: add the date to your top nav bar. Trust me, it's pretty handy.

Open up your System Preferences
Click on "International"
Click Formats
Under the dates section, click "Customize"
Under "Show," use the drop-down menu to select "Medium"
Copy the month and date from the field, then hit "Cancel"
Under the "Times" section, click "Customize"
Under "Show," use the drop-down menu to select "Medium"
Paste the month and date at the end of the time format
Click "OK"

You're all set! You'll now see the date as well as the time at the top of your Finder's nav bar.

Skullcandy Brings It With the Pipe iPod Dock

I usually associate Skullcandy with badass-looking headphones, but they also make equally cool-looking iPod accessories, like this Pipe iPod Dock ($90).

It may be less eco than the Vers iPod Dock I posted last week, but it has a similar look with its wood grain. And even if you've given up your iPod Classic in favor of an iPhone, Skullcandy's model is also iPhone compatible!
