Top 10 Gadget Line Participants!

Even though I can usually wait for a gadget's hype to die down, I had to stand in line for the iPhone 3G - I have a reputation to uphold!

Standing in line for a gadget teaches you something about yourself. Mainly that I hate everyone. Just kidding! I'm not some misanthrope, it just inevitably happens that the people I stand near in lines end up being people I can't wait to never see again. But most likely, pretty much anyone you stand within close proximity for seven hours is going to start wearing on your nerves.

The Space Invader (also known as the Encroacher): The people who can't quite accept that they're in line behind you and spend the multiple line hours stealthily trying to stand next to you, and eventually in front of you, stepping on your feet, until a withering look sends them back to their place.

The Media Whore: There for the rare fleeting publicity of a blog post or two (sorry, Dale).
The Visitor: People not actually in line, but who are vicariously experiencing the line with you, either by participating as a "counter" (who just continually count people in line), asking "What is this line for?" or the "You're a sucker" drive-by.
The "I'm Not in a Line" Line Guy: Completely oblivious that they're in a line, these people will forget where they are and how close to others they are; often evidenced by smoking, talking very loudly, and rarely moving up.
The Early Adopter Who Is Continuing to Adopt and Needs You to Know About It: Exhibits compulsive 1st generation iPhone-whipping-out, so that everyone knows that he already has an iPhone, he knows what's up, and he is continuing to be this awesome.
The Know It All: Knows everything about the old iPhone and the new iPhone, despite a) not having owned one yet and b) being incorrect; repeatedly utters how glad he is that he did not get suckered into buying one last year.
The "IPHONE! WOOO!" Guy: Self-explanatory.
The Alternator: Like relay racers, the couple in front of you keeps switching from one person to the other, as one leaves and gets coffee, and then the other leaves and gets sandwiches; one leaves to get waters, then the other leaves to use the bathroom. And so on.
The Debater: Might take off at any minute. Can be seen muttering under their breath things like "not worth it" and calculating the time lost standing in said line. Generally always sticks it out (but they are not happy about it).
The Polite One: Very rare.

Taking It All In: iPhone 3G Day

Some of you thought I was crazy for waiting in line six hours for a cell phone, but when you get that rush, that feeling of pure satisfaction and joy when a shiny and new gadget is in your hands, it's well worth the wait and then some. The long-awaited iPhone 3G launch in SF has come and gone and here are a few of my memorable moments from that lonnng day which will go down in history with last year's exhilarating iPhone launch day.

iWhat? iGot an iPhone 3G!

Well it was worth the wait, because I finally have the iPhone 3G in my hands - and yes, it is much smoother and sleeker thanks to the new durable plastic encasing! This second generation "Jesus phone" is back in action, and holy moly am I excited to load it up with some amazing apps. Aside from the new apps that will keep me entertained, I cannot wait to test out the phone's built-in GPS. So far so good on browser speed (Apple claims it's three to five times faster than the first gen iPhone) and the audio quality has greatly improved. Stay tuned for a full rundown of its specs after I test out its goodies! Christmas in July rocks!

iPhone 3G Activation Problems Are Nationwide

After waiting in SF's iPhone 3G line for over an hour and barely moving at all, I couldn't help but ask one of the guys (who was near the front of the line), what the hold up was when he came out of the store with his chic white bag and new iPhone 3G (sadly, it wasn't Dale).

He said it was a painful process and took over half an hour for Apple staffers to complete the paperwork and activate his phone - although he said his phone still wasn't up and running yet when he left the store.

Word on the street is that Apple stores are having difficulty accessing accounts on the iTunes system, most likely because of the overload of customers on the iTunes store. Some customers are even being sent home to unbrick their phones themselves using iTunes. Looks like it's gonna be a lonnngg day!

Dale Was Third in Line Last Year, First in Line This Year

"I'm not a fan of Apple in particular. I'm a fan of anyone who understands the power of good design (understood in the broad sense) and delivers a fantastic end-to-end experience," says Dale Larson, who landed himself the prime real estate spot in front San Francisco's Apple store. Yes, Dale was first in line when Apple employees opened their doors this morning for the iPhone 3G launch, unlike last year when Dale had two other eager shoppers ahead of him. At least he was dressed to impress for the second year in a row!

Since last year's launch of the iPhone was so crazy, I didn't want to miss my chances of becoming a proud 3G owner. So I cruised by the Apple store in downtown San Francisco last night to check out the line, and assess my chances of getting my hands on the must have device of the Summer. Although you've heard people have already been lined up for days outside the New York Apple store, and others are offering to wait in line for you (for a nominal fee, of course), the scene outside the Apple store in SF wasn't as frenzied as I would have thought. iPhone 3G S Launch: Mild Compared to Last Year

If any of you were around for the iPhone launch in 2007 and the iPhone 3G launch last year, you're probably noticing that the hoopla surrounding this year's launch isn't as crazy as previous years. Before AT&T opened its doors this morning, there were a few people lingering about, but nothing to the effect of lawn chairs, a beverage cooler, and blankets. Here are some pics of what the scene looked like outside San Francisco's Apple store this morning - a decent, civilized line - without any hardcore overnighters. I know most of you are pretty excited about the iPhone 3G S, so taking into consideration the state of the economy and the fact that you could pre-order the device online, do you think this is why the lineups are smaller than the past two years?

What Will You Do With Your Old iPhone?

If you're one of the many who has already picked up an iPhone 3G (or will be getting one pretty soon), are you also one of the many who already had an iPhone? Old man iPhone 1.0, 2G, whatever you want to call it?

I am among these ranks too and have been debating forever now on what to do with my old phone, now that I am sporting a hot new fingerprint-free iPhone 3G.

Should you get cash for it with Flipswap? Sell it on Craigslist to a tech-needy soul, or will you give it to a deserving and envious younger sibling? Or maybe you will recycle it way, way before its time?

More Verizon Commercials Bash AT&T Service

Fresh off the heels of the Droid launch last week, Verizon just released its new holiday ads, featuring the same 3G coverage maps that appeared in previous ads.

The latest anti-Apple commercial features an iPhone banished to the "land of misfit toys." While Verizon did add a disclaimer at the bottom of the screen explaining the illustration (highlighted in the image), I'm wondering if AT&T will have similar issues with these ads. Not only are they showing the map in question from previous commercials, they're also taking a direct hit at the iPhone - and ending the commercial by showcasing their brand new phones.
