What Is Your Favorite Gadget?

It's been awhile since we discussed our favorite gadgets in the My Favorite Gadgets group, so I'm really excited and curious to know: since the release of the Nintendo DSi, iPhone 3GS, Kindle DX, and HP Mini (some of the best gadgets out there in my book) has a new gadget taken top rank in your life?

Personally, I'm pretty convinced that the iPhone will be my favorite gadget for quite a while, but what about you? Ask a Geek Girl: Which Battery Should I Buy?

A common problem with consumer cameras that use alkaline batteries is that they drain really quickly. Geek reader valova82 is tired of spending her hard-earned dollars on batteries, and wants some help picking a brand that will stand the test of time:

I have a Polaroid i533 digital camera. It eats my battery power (uses two AA batteries), and I'm so tired of constantly purchasing batteries. Do you have any suggestions on what brand of batteries I should try?

I am not a fan of use-'em-and-toss-'em alkaline batteries, and neither is Mother Earth! You should invest a small amount of cash and get yourself a set of rechargeable batteries! Since not all rechargeables are created equal, it takes a bit of investigating to find out which ones are best, and I like to rely on customer product reviews. Although you might end up charging your batteries more often with rechargeables, you're going to save a ton of money on batteries, and prevent pollution.

First, you'll want to look for batteries labeled Ni-MH, since you can't charge just any battery. I would try the Sony Quick Battery Charger ($22.00) that charges up to four batteries in about four hours, which is comparable to most battery chargers on the market. Bonuses include power adapter for travel out of the country, four included batteries, and it can charge each battery individually, which is not the case for most chargers.

If you're looking for something a little more speedy, I would recommend the Duracell CEF90NC 30 Minute Charger ($20), which also comes with a set of its own batteries. This one is great if you forget to charge your batteries overnight, since the reviews are indicating that it really does charge in 30 short minutes! Plus, the Duracell comes with an auto-shutoff feature when the cells are fully charged, and your batteries can be recharged up to 1,000 times. Very cost effective, no?

Ask a Geek Girl: I Need a Good iPhone 3G Case

Although I've listed tons of new case options, there are still some of you that want something specific. Take Geek reader millarci, for example, when she wrote in to ask about which iPhone 3G case she should invest in:

I'm in the market for an iPhone 3G case. I prefer something clear, but want something that will protect my iPhone 3G from scratches, smudges, etc. So far, I'm leaning towards the Contour Flick, which seems to be a best-seller on the apple website. Any ideas?

Although the Contour Flick is a top seller on the Apple website, its reviews have been less than stellar. I personally picked up the Griffin Nu Form in white (pictured above), and it has been awesome. Not only does the Nu Form have a protective yet streamlined hard shell, it also comes stocked with a clear face cover so you can keep scratches off your screen. It never fails that I'll toss my keys into the designated "gadget compartment" of my bag and scratch up my goodies, but not with this bad boy.

An alternative to a case is a clear skin. Be warned that applying them can be a bit time consuming (getting all the corners and ends to match up), but I can attest that The Best Skin Ever (yup, that's the name) totally rocks! I've had one on my iPod for a while and recently slapped one on my iPhone to test it out. They've felt completely protected ever since. But of course, I think dropping my phone with just the skin to protect it would still cause my heart to skip a beat!

Outrageous Family Tech Stories

I try to be as patient as I can with my family concerning computer help and setting up gadgets - after all, my parents graduated from college when they didn't have to use computers. To be honest, neither one of them is terrible, and aside from a few networking issues, their office runs pretty smooth. Such was not the case for the first boss I had out of college. He would call me up in the middle of the day while traveling and literally ask me to log in to his e-mail because he "couldn't get it when he was away from his computer." Aye, gosh!

I love the repetition of the lamp posts in this picture. I just wish that I had backed up more so the top of the lamp hadn't been cut off. This was taken at the University of Georgia. I used to live in Athens and my friends and I would wander around campus even though we weren't in college and just hang out. This was taken with a Vivitar v3800n.
