Surf's Up: The Ocean Is Now in Google Earth

Splish splash - Google Earth added the world's bath! The latest version of Google Earth, 5.0, now has a 3D version of the ocean floor.

The "new" ocean features reefs, underwater animal homes, and even surf spot recommendations. Just check out the Ocean layer in Google Earth and start exploring the mysterious sea. Before downloading it, you can check out the video below to see the new ocean layer, along with Google Earth's other new features, including the time-shifting Historical Imagery layer.

And no, Sponge Bob's house is not on Street View. I checked.

How to Track Santa With Google Earth

Want to watch Santa's flight around the world tonight? Google Earth and Norad (AKA the North American Aerospace Defense Command) are your official Santa trackers, so you don't have to rely on your dad just pointing at some blinking light in the sky (that you're pretty sure is a helicopter, anyway).

All you need is to download Google Earth if you haven't already, and then go to Norad's Santa page.

Click the red button to download the Santa tracking file (available at 6 a.m. EST today), and you should be good to go.

If you're not sitting at a computer tonight, you can also use Norad to track Santa on your cell phone!

Where's Waldo on Google Earth? Genius!

Mixing art with technology is exactly what Media Arts student Melanie Coles did for her graduating project. . . and it is bigger (literally) and better than most grad art assignments I've encountered (yes she deserves an A!). Melanie's project, entitled Where On Earth Is Waldo creates a Google Earth Where's Waldo inspired game. With the help of volunteers, Melanie and her team were able to create a gigantic Waldo painting to be placed on rooftops throughout Vancouver, Canada. The best part? Waldo will only be seen via Google Earth, so the entire world can play "Where's Waldo: Google Earth Edition" as well!

The project will be exhibited at the Emily Carr Graduation Exhibit 08 opening May 3, 2008.

Geek Tip: Use Google Earth to Track the Weather

If you're a Google Earth nut like I am you may have noticed a new weather folder in the layers panel, which allows you to keep up on weather patterns in your area and across the world.

The Google Earth blog reports that the weather folder contains three sublayers (clouds, radar, and conditions, and forecasts) and one information link that gives you some background information on the data being displayed.

The clouds layer depicts a global satellite mosaic of clouds created on an hourly basis so you can log on any time to check out cloud movement in your area. Getting dressed in the morning just got easier.

Following the success of Google Earth, which allows you to get a bird's eye view of most corners of the world and even watch the sun come up, Google has launched a new Sky feature, that will allow you to play astronaut from the ground.

The feature allows you to zoom in to distant galaxies and nebulae, view constellations and the movements of the planets and learn about the lifecycle of a star and different kinds of galaxies. You can also create and share your own imagery, placemarks and more. With a hundred million stars and two hundred million galaxies your searching seems infinite.

Google Earth adds another neat dimension to its already cool user experience. Now you can check out some of the most beautiful sunrises across the globe with a new Google Earth layer which allows you to watch the sunrise right on your laptop. Taken from Discovery HD Theater’s “Sunrise Earth” program, you can now select the Sunrise Earth layer by clicking Sunrise Earth Program, scrolling down the left side and clicking the "watch the sunrise (on Google Earth)" link. Time to inhale, take a tea break and enjoy the scenery!
