Google Goes All Out For its Tenth Birthday!

I can never seem to get enough Google goodness, so when I discovered that it was Google's tenth birthday this month and that they set up a fun educational website for this special occasion, I was all over it! Learn trivia tidbits about the company - like what the most popular Google.com search query was in 1999, or when Klingon became one of Google's supported languages - you can find all of these fun facts on their site. You can also check out a really neat time line that showcases all of the Google milestones from the past ten years!

Website of the Day: TownMe

Just moved to a new city or town? Or perhaps you're taking a business trip to a place you've never visited and you're trying to locate some decent restaurants and shopping areas. A recently launched site called TownMe will help you get acquainted with your new surroundings by showing you the best restaurants, bars, and businesses thanks to the "What's Near Me" search tool. I met with the founders yesterday (who food for thought, are two former Google employees) and learned all about this site and its useful features.

Umm hello?! It even has a section under tools where you can check out birthday deals in your city (free food and more!). Aside from discovering where the sugar daddies are located in your city, checking out what other people are tweeting about in your community, or where the best yoga studio is in your neighborhood, TownMe allows you to create your own info page or edit someone else's so you can list out all of your local faves to share with the community as well.

Click "New Post" under the website of the day tab at the top of the page.
Give your story a "Title."
Fill in the "Body" with a link to your favorite website and the reasons why you love it.

Add keyword(s) in the tag field with relevant tags (for example mine for this story was "Website of the Day").
Choose whether you want the post to be private or public.
Click "Create Post" to submit content.

Do You Like Google's Themed Logos?

I sometimes forget that when I use iGoogle, I don't get to see Google's beautifully designed holiday logos. And after attending the spectacular Doodle 4 Google Competition last year down at the Googleplex, I have a greater appreciation for these colorful creations that spruce up our search experience.

Some of my faves include the Dr. Seuss-inspired logo to honor Dr. Seuss's birthday and the Morse code message that went up yesterday for Samuel Morse's -the inventor of Morse code - birthday. And what about the first day of Spring design by Eric Carle? Love them all. Do Google themed-logos brighten your day, or do you even notice them? And if so, what are some of your faves?

Kids: Is Your Doodle Good Enough For Google's Homepage?

It's time to sharpen your kids' pencils for the Doodle 4 Google competition. You've probably noticed Google gives its logo (a.k.a. Google Doodle) makeovers to celebrate special holidays, birthdays and events. Usually, a man named Dennis Hwang draws these Google Doodles (you can see him work his magic in the video below), but Google is giving US students in grades K-12 the opportunity to design a doodle for the Google homepage. The rules are:

Students will be asked to draw a doodle that best represents the theme "What if...?" We ask ourselves this question every day when we build our products, so we thought we would ask the same of the future doodlers.
A panel of expert judges and Googlers will select 40 regional winners, who will be invited to the Googleplex in Mountain View, California, in May. Four national finalists will be announced as the result of a public vote. From there, Dennis will select one lucky student whose doodle will be on the Google homepage for a day in the U.S. This winner will also receive a $10,000 college scholarship and a technology grant for his or her school.

How To Sync Your Google Calendar With iCal

I literally have four calendars that list all my future to-do's, events, holidays, birthdays, activities and social outings. Most people use Google calendar, a convenient and free way to access your personal agenda from any computer, or Apple's iCal, a desktop based Mac OS X calendar application which I personally think isn't as feature-filled as the handy Google calendar. Fortunately, Google Calendar allows you to sync up with external applications, by virtue of SyncML, and through one-way syncing via XML. And iCal can be used to subscribe to your Google Calendar, and will automatically check Google calendar every few minutes to check for new items. Best Online Calendars For the New Year

If you hope to be more organized this year I suggest you spend some time selecting an online calendar that can easily sync with your gadgetry and life.

Though relatively unknown Famundo has received a lot of attention lately for being a great option for families. They call themselves a "family hub" and hope to replace your wall calendar, address book, filing cabinet, fridge magnets and yellow sticky notes. Famundo offers Outlook synchronization, a list maker and even a family library for storing your documents, photos, bookmarks and other personal information.
You all know I am a die hard fan of the free shareable Google calendar, which makes it easy to keep track of birthdays, schedules, dates and appointments. I couldn't live without its invitations feature, which allows you to send invites to friends and family.
Real Simple recently sang the praises of Which Time so I checked it out and am pretty impressed with its set up. It seems like a simpler version of Google Cal or Famundo and takes style points from iCal. The calendars can be downloaded or accessed from the web.
