Vintage Geeks: Young Steve vs. Young Bill

Get a load of these vintage magazine covers of a young Bill Gates (LOLZ-worthy title: "Computer Software: The Magic Inside the Machine") and an equally young Steve Jobs (LOLZ-worthy title: "The Fall of Steve Jobs")!

Although the stylistic choices vary for both (Steve has a passion for fashion, whereas inside Bill beats the heart of a bang stylist), I have a soft spot for both, especially in their more youthful and arguably handsomer days. Seeing them like this reminds me of the idealistic young whippersnappers they must have been and how exciting things were at that time.

Now that our Bill has retired and Steve keeps landing on unflattering lists, it's refreshing to reflect on the halcyon days of young tech and young them. So, based on these covers, whom do you prefer?

Chuck's Zachary Levi: Aggressively Geeky

I thought I knew how geeky Zachary Levi was, what with stories of Wii injuries and video game devotion, but it turns out that there is so much more tech dorkiness under the surface. Get ready to drool, geek lovers.

BuzzSugar was at the TCAs for deets on the new season of Chuck and got a little more geekery than she bargained for.

Exhibit A: Zachary whipped out his spankin' new iPhone and pulled up the Light Saber app to show his admirers the whoosh sound.
Exhibit B: He then showed everyone his iPhone wallpaper: the Nerd Herd logo from Chuck.
Exhibit C: He confirmed that he is, in fact, still a Mac.

Who Is Your Favorite Tech Spokesguy?

Before he was Apple's hipster Mac representative, I had a little thing for Justin Long (I hear Drew Barrymore does too). Before him, I thought the Dell dude, Ben Curtis - remember him? "Dude, you're gettin' a Dell" - was pretty cute (subsequent marijuana-related arrests notwithstanding). And even though I'm a Mac gal, I totally have a thing for sweet little PC, John Hodgman.

Add to them the bespectacled Verizon guy, Paul Marcarelli, who dutifully asks whether you can hear him now and Alltel Wireless' blond cutie Chad Brokaw, and we've got a nice little collection of geeky crushes, courtesy of the tech advertising industry. Who's your fave?

Geeky Movie Crush: Speed Racer Emile Hirsch

I knew the Speed Racer trailer was the perfect opportunity to post a picture of the adorable Emile Hirsch. As the title character in Speed Racer, Emile makes my geek girl dreams come true by embodying one of my favorite cartoon characters from my childhood in the film version. Helmed by the Wachowskis - themselves geek heroes as the filmmakers of The Matrix films - Speed Racer looks like high tech action fun.

Emile's been on my radar since The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, and while I love his work in dramatic fare like Into the Wild, I'm excited that he's tackling an action movie that won't be a typical popcorn blockbuster. Also, Emile in that helmet? Too cute.

My Geeky TV Crush: Jim Halpert

I've celebrated my boyfriend, the geeky guys I love, and now I've got to give it up for my imaginary boyfriends on Valentine's Day too! And my big, ultimate (for right now anyway), TV crush is Jim Halpert. Not John Krasinski, but Jim Halpert.

Is obsessed too strong a word? I've loved Jim since The Office started airing, because he represents my kind of guy - the geeky but adorable guy who was too shy to talk to girls in high school, but who eventually comes into their own based on smarts and a killer personality. I think Jim's a fox, but his attraction, for me, is definitely rooted in his geekiness. I've never swooned harder than when I saw Jim playing Second Life and Call of Duty (the real John's no slouch in the tech department either - he's narrated Ask.com and Apple TV commercials!). Sigh. Happy Valentine's Day, Fake TV Boyfriend!

But if all women knew that dating a technology lover comes with so many perks, they wouldn't need to be convinced. And in reality, Mark and Priscilla have been together since before he released "The Facebook." Here are five reasons to seek out a geeky guy.

They're genuine: There's a good chance a geek has spent more time playing video games than practicing his game. And if he's used to being the dating underdog, he'll likely appreciate having you in his life.
They set up your electronics: Can't get your WiFi to work? Dream of an awesome entertainment setup but frightened by cords? Find a guy that looks at setting up electronics as a form of entertainment itself.

Night classes - Whether it's a dance lesson, coding class, or novel-writing seminar, classes are a great place to meet a future brainy mate. Pounce on the opportunity to partner up with the cute geek in the room, whether it's to complete a project, study, or edit each other's work.

New Amazing Spider-Man Trailer: 3 Reasons to Watch

I know we've already seen a couple of trailers for The Amazing Spider-Man, but the latest one is still definitely worth watching. In the midst of footage we've seen before, like Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield)'s romance with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), there's also a lot of fresh stuff. More specifically, there's more action, more villainy, and a little more humor. Here are three reasons you should check it out:

More Spidey sass. We already knew that Garfield's Peter Parker loves a good wisecrack, and here his sarcasm is on display again, as he reveals a fear of small knives. I have to give credit to Marc Webb for remembering that even geeky teens can be obnoxious.
A better look at the Lizard. The flashes of Dr. Connors, aka The Lizard, are still brief, but this preview provides a better idea of what we're in for. Specifically, just how big (and kind of scary) this guy is.
More intrigue. I've always been curious about Peter's parents, since the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies don't really touch on the topic at all, and I'm looking forward to getting some answers in The Amazing Spider-Man. Not only does this new trailer tease that secrets will be revealed, but it suggests that Peter was destined to be Spidey all along.

How I Convinced My Hubby Not to Hate Running

My husband loves his bike and he loves his skis, but he's never been much of a slip-on-your-sneaks-and-go-for-a-run kind of guy. That is until now.

Wooed him with gear: To replace his cotton tube socks, sweatpants, and high school t-shirts, I got him some wicking socks, real running pants, and merino wool shirts. He was amazed that after a run there were no blisters or chafing from his loose pants, and he stayed relatively dry thanks to the wicking shirt.
Added a little friendly competition: It's human nature to be a little competitive, and my hubby is no exception. For a couple bucks, I downloaded the Nike+ GPS app to his iPhone. He loves that it keeps track of his time, distance, pace, and calories burned, and the GPS charts his route. The latest version of the app has the Nike+ Tag feature, which allows you to compete with friends. The object of the game is not to be "It," and in our case, whoever runs the shortest distance becomes "It." The competition has actually motivated both of us to run.

Wedding season is moving right along here on the Sugar Network, but it's always fun to take a look back and see how everything started. Marriage proposals are getting more creative with the addition of smartphones, video games, and movie magic, and I can't help but tear up after seeing these sweetly geeky proposals from geeks all across the country. Check out six of my favorites here.

Making the movies jealous - The latest in a string of viral marriage proposals, Matt asked Ginny to marry him in an elaborate (Mac made?) movie trailer in a theater full of onlookers. Unbeknownst to her, there's a camera on her the entire time, and her reactions are totally adorable. Movie geeks, unite!
Widgets proposal - A Mac nerd made up a custom widget to propose to his girlfriend back in 2007. Mac dashboard widgets were the hot ticket item back then, and this one was the first (and only?) of its kind.
HP7 Android app - Disguising a Harry Potter trivia quiz as a marriage proposal isn't easy, but this determined geek learned how to develop one on his own in order to surprise the Muggle of his dreams.
