Cars Of Famous Computer Geeks

I don't know if it's my fascination with famous techie tycoons or if I have an inner fetish for things that make me go vroom, but when Automotoportal compiled a list of famous geeks and their rides, I needed to know more. When money isn't an issue for these well-known gazillionaires, it's interesting to see what make and model of cars they take to the streets.
Bill Gates of Microsoft cruises around in a 1988 Porsche 959 Coupe, while Apple mogul Steve Jobs drives a Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG. Larry Ellison of Oracle uses his Bentley Continental Flying Spur for joyrides and Michael Dell of Dell computers speeds around in a 2008 Porsche Boxster. Sweet rides all around, but I kinda figured Jobs to be a vintage car guy too. Now if only they'd take some advice from New York Times technology columnist and CBS news correspondent David Pogue and drive a Toyota Prius - being earthy is just as hot. Just ask Leo.

Totally Geeky or Geek Chic? Key Covered Car

I spotted this car on TechEBlog and couldn't help but think that this must be the ultimate ride for die-hard computer geeks, as it comes plastered with thousands of colorful keyboard keys. Gotta love how the front bumper has been outfitted with pink keys, which leads me to believe that these wheels belong to a sweet sixteen-year-old techie gal...or to a guy that has a lot of pink keyboards! Thankfully a car like the one Bill Gates owns wasn't harmed in the making. I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a chocolate beetle than a car like this. Geeky or somewhat chic? Totally Geeky or Geek Chic? Mitsubishi Hello Kitty Car

It's not a pink Cadillac cruisin' down the street, it's a pink “Princess Kitty” Mitsubishi drivin' down the freeway. This limited edition Hello Kitty car - limited meaning one and only one was made in Tokyo last year - is entirely pink with matching wheels, making it prime geeksugar talk. The Hello Kitty trademark ribbon logo is splattered on the front doors and roof, while the rear doors get a “Princess Kitty” graphic with the lovable cartoon character’s face. Both back window and side view mirrors also get a Hello Kitty face decal as well. According to autoblog.com, one lucky buyer got to purchase the car for ¥2,100,000 ($18,200), with most of the proceeds going to Japan's UNICEF. Seems like a good price for a unique Hello Kitty car? Would you have to be a total geek to drive one of these?

Mini Electric Cars: Totally Geeky or Geek Chic?

This week Nissan announced that it will unveil the Pivo 2, an advanced electric concept car, at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show. The car is powered by Compact Lithium-ion Batteries and features a unique rotating cabin, meaning no reverse gear is required. According to the company's press release, the Pivo 2 takes the idea of an environmentally friendly electric urban commuter vehicle and delivers fun, functionality and a unique relationship between the car and driver. I've seen a handful of mini electric cars on the road recently in San Francisco and while I fully support their function I'm a little shocked by their designs, which still look like geeky cars of the future. When it comes to electrical transportation does the function of the machine outweigh its design? Would you drive one?

Nissan Cube: Totally Geeky or Geek Chic?

I'm not exactly a gear-head, but I can appreciate nice cars. Especially those that are gas friendly and geeked out, which could describe the Nissan Cube to a T. Emphasis on the could. I mean, I love the fact that the Nissan Cube offers full iPod integration, a sweet six-speaker sound system (two of which are called tweeters - how awesome is that?), satellite radio, and Bluetooth, all packed in a boxy exterior, but with a surprisingly curvaceous and roomy interior.

My only complaint is that most of these features come standard on the most expensive model, and aren't offered at all on the lower tiered ones. Shouldn't all of these great tech integrations come standard on all cars these days? Especially one whose ads are branding it as a Mobile Device? But at the end of the day, I gotta face the fact that what really endeared me to this car is the gadget grass on the dashboard that keeps your gear in its place. I admit it - I'm easily pleased.

Toyota Makes Its Own Font With a Car

I've already talked about the ultra compact iQ car, the tiny hybrid from Toyota, which has already been released in Europe and Japan. Unfortunately, a similar model won't be available in the US until 2012.

But, thanks to my font-geek friends, I made this discovery: Toyota took an interactive artist, font designers, and a stunt driver, put them together, and came up with a new font, called the iQfont.

Visit Toyota's Belgian site to watch a video detailing how they came up with the font. In a nutshell, it involves cameras positioned over an open space, a Toyota iQ with four colored dots, and software that tracks the car's movement as it draws out each letter. The result is a totally unique font.

I'm not sure that this beats a font created out of my own handwriting, but it's pretty impressive.

Top 6 Tech Moments From the Melrose Place Premiere

The series premiere of Melrose Place delivered an abounding dose of drama and some flashy tech toys and references. I was thrilled to see the show upgrade from the giant car phones of the original series (naturally - it's been a while), and make some legitimately geeky references. Could this be the new trendy tech show of the season?

Textual tension: The premiere opened with David's phone ringing during a hot and heavy makeout scene. "Don't even think about it!" whispers the gal. "Oh course not, baby!" And then he looks down his iPhone and sees the message "In serious trouble. Come now!" Doesn't David know it is rude to text while on a date?
Geeky proposal: Jonah pretends to forget his fifth anniversary with Riley, casually pours himself a bowl of cereal and sits down at the TV. When he turns the flat screen on, it plays a video montage of cute couple moments, which ends in Jonah kneeling at Riley's side to propose to her. Of course, true to Melrose drama, they quickly hear a scream outside....
Twitter chatter: After he is questioned by police, David sneaks up on Ella at the police department, who admits she gave an alibi to cover his story. "5:30 in the morning?," asks David. "Everyone is going to think we hooked up!" Ella quips back, "So it gives them something to tweet about!"
Gadget love: Mr. Swarley recognizes Jonah's camera is a $10,000 EX3, which makes Jonah geek out. "Yeah! This thing is sick! You can choose 60 frames per second...swap this out for the film lenses...it's my dream camera! I love it!"
Geek dreamboat: Riley considers whether she should say "yes" to Jonah: "I love him more than anything...the guy has a box of Legos in the closet he still plays with...he watches Saturday morning cartoons before going off to play laser tag." If that's not a geeky guy, I don't know what is!
The camera doesn't lie: Jonah mistakenly catches Mr. Swarley locking lips with a much younger girl on his fancy camera, which makes Swarley spaz out. Jonah's reassurance? He says as soon as he is done editing the recording will be deleted and sent into the "digital ether." Oh, if only such a place existed. The camera never lies and files never die.
