GarageBand and iMovie Coming to iPad 2

Now that the iPad 2 is coming with more power, you're able to take advantage of advanced apps. Announced today, both GarageBand and iMovie will be available for the iPad and will come with all the features you know and love from the desktop software, including some updates like smart instruments, which are like musical training wheels to help you compose a song.

Both of these apps will hit the iTunes store on March 11 for $4.99.

Apple Introduces iLife '11, Coming Packed With New Features

The first new product to be introduced at the Back to the Mac event is iLife. Coming with a bunch of new features, iLife is better than ever. Check out what's new in each application below.

iPhoto
New features include new full screen modes, Facebook enhancements, new slideshows, and new ways to email photos and print cards, including new custom letterpress cards (!) and postcards. Cool new maps let you see geo-tagged pics, and enhancements to the Faces feature recognizes faces even better. Additionally, you can customize books even further, add text, and move pics around with ease, then see all of your custom books in a bookshelf (just like in the iBookstore).

Up Close With Garageband's Learn to Play Feature

San Francisco is alive with the sounds of Macworld, and the new learn to play feature for Garageband wants to add even more beautiful music. Check out my quick video of it, with the lovely Sara Bareilles giving a piano lesson.

I for one, cannot wait to get my hands on this; I've got a 10-year-old guitar sitting unplayed in my closet. I just need a little Apple prodding, and I'll be giving it my all!

Live From Macworld: The New iLife and iWork

Apple's Macworld announcements keep rollin' in! Continuing with my earlier coverage, I'm picking up with Phil Schiller's keynote, centering around iLife; so far he's mentioned that new features of iPhoto and iMovie, and now he's moving on to Garageband.

Garageband can now teach you to play an instrument! With the "Learn to play" feature, you can get lessons from artists like Sting and Fall Out Boy on the piano or guitar.

The new iLife is supposed to be available later this month, and ships free on all Macs, but for upgrades will be $79, or $99 for a family pack that can be used on five computers.

read more. iWork '09 is also boasting some new impressive features, if you use your Mac for presentations at work. iWork's Keynote feature will provide themes and organize your slides for you, and you can use your iPhone as a remote to change your slides with the Keynote Remote app for the iPhone (just 99 cents). Next, Pages and Numbers - the Mac equivalent to Excel and Word, respectively, have an amazing amount of new and beautiful templates, and work together so you can link tables you make in Numbers with docs you make in Pages. iWork, ready to ship today, is $79 or $99 for a family pack, or $49 if you're buying a new Mac and want to add it in. Since iWork and iLife must use Leopard, Apple is providing a bundle of iWork, iLife, and Leopard called Mac Box Set for $169, available later this month. Schiller also says that Apple is working on iWork.com (still in beta), which will allow you to share documents online, but edit them offline. iWork.com will be fee based when it launches, but free to sign up for the beta. How To: Create Custom Ringtones with Garageband

Although I've showed you several ways to make your own ringtones previously using some pretty cool applications, and you can make almost any song a ringtone in iTunes for a fee, why not use some of the music you already have and create custom ringtones on the fly? This is especially for you Mac users, since it uses the apps you already have stocked in your machine.

All you need is the latest version of Garageband (4.1.1), iTunes (7.5 or later), and some music, and you're good to go!

The Week in Geek

This week was dominated by news of the iPad 2, but other headlines managed to make it onto our radar amid the Apple news. Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga, and exciting 3DS all made headlines, too. Check out these stories and more of what you might have missed in this week's recap.

The week kicked off with a Sunday night showing of the Oscars, which were an especially big hit on Twitter. Here's why.
Also over the weekend, Gmail lost email messages of .02 percent of users. The emails have since been restored and Gmail is back to normal.
Then, Lady Gaga's new video debuted, and while it wasn't full of the geeky tech references of Gaga videos past, it is fabulously sci-fi.
Of course, the star of this week is most certainly the iPad 2, which was unveiled by Steve Jobs himself at an event in San Francisco. We took plenty of photos and even got up close and personal with the new device.
And since the new iPad is much more powerful than the original, it can handle more complicated programs. Look for both iMove and GarageBand in the App Store once the iPad 2 hits stores on March 11.
Also available March 11: iOS 4.3 with improved features like PhotoBooth, iTunes home sharing, and more.
Of course, if you were on the Internet this week, you probably saw more than you ever thought possible about Charlie Sheen. Is he even bigger than the iPad 2?
Exciting news for anyone waiting for the Nintendo 3DS to hit shelves later this month; it comes with a free WiFi connection and Netflix app.
And to round out the week, we chose our March must haves: a few of our favorite gadgets and products that will get you to the start of Spring in style.

What a Savings! First-Gen iPad's Now Just $399

In case you missed it, the price of an iPhone 3GS has diminished to just $50, and now that the iPad 2 has been officially unveiled, Apple is taking the price on the first-generation 16GB WiFi-only iPad down to $399 ($350 if you snatch up a refurbished model).

While you won't get the option to choose white or black and won't have any cameras to FaceTime your friends, you can load it up with some celeb-worthy apps, including the new Garageband app ($5), which drops on March 11.

So tell me - will you be picking up a first generation iPad now that it's $100 cheaper?
