Use Firefox's Page Info to Recover Forgotten Passwords

Do you chronically blank on your passwords? If so, I have a little tip that can make things much easier on you: you can recover saved passwords from any site in Firefox in five easy steps! Ready? Here we go:

Right click anywhere on the web page you need to sign in to.
Select "View Page Info"
Click on the "Security" tab in the menu.
Click on "View Saved Passwords"
Click on "Show Passwords"

You can then view all user names and saved passwords that have been stored by your Firefox cookies.

Is this tip helpful? Yes - I have forgotten many a password in my day and this would have saved me time and frustration. Is this tip dangerous? Possibly - if your computer isn't password protected and it just so happens to fall into the wrong hands, you could be setting yourself up for a problem. My solution would be to use this little tip when you need it, but remember to password protect your computer so it's safely locked when you aren't around!

Firefox 3 Makes It Into the Guinness Book of World Records

Hoorah! It looks like with your ample help, Firefox 3 made it into the prestigious pages of The Guinness Book of World Records, as was their goal. Mozilla's achievement is in the most downloads on a 24-hour period: 8,002,530!

I know some fraction of those were geeksugar readers so pat yourselves on the back for helping make history!

I'm already getting used to Firefox 3 and experimenting with tricks for anything I don't like, but I couldn't be happier with it now, and I hope you'll join me in congratulating Mozilla and Firefox 3: High fives all around!

If You're Finding Firefox 3's Awesome Bar Not So Awesome. . .

I can't say enough good things about Firefox 3 - it's extremely fast, has an intuitive interface and uses much less memory than Firefox 2 (hence, fewer Firefox crashes). But, you knew it was coming, I cannot adjust to the "Smart Location Bar," or as others have been calling it, the "Awesome Bar." I don't want my location bar to suggest 12 bookmarks and URLs that resemble what I've previously visited when I type in a search - auto search is definitely not for me.

If you are feeling the same way as me, get your Firefox 3 location bar to look like Firefox 2 with a download called oldbar. Now when I type in geeksugar, it will take me to geeksugar.com and show me other geeksugar sites I've visited - the good old way - and not to some random other site!

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

First of all, join the Download of the Day group
Click "Create and Share!" on the left hand side
Choose "Blog"
Give your photo a Title
Leave the category as "general"
Change the channel to "technology and gadgets"
Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Download of the Day")
Click on the "Add Image" link below the "body" box
A popup window will happen - click on "Browse" to find your image on your computer
Once you have the image chosen, click "Submit"
The popup will show you your image, choose size: "normal" - if you want, you can give it a title (which will show up as a caption)
Click "Insert" and the popup will go away
Your "body" box will now have some text in it. Leave it as is. If you want to add some text before the picture telling me why you love the download, do it before the code that has appeared.
Click Submit

So join the Download of the Day group and share information about all your favorite downloads! Yours just might end up on the geeksugar homepage!

Did You Download Firefox 3 Yesterday?

The newest version of Firefox was released yesterday, and Mozilla pushed to hit their Guinness World Record goal - so hard that they overloaded their servers in the morning, as some of you experienced when you tried to download it.

I'd been using the beta version of 3 for a while, and now that my essential add-ons work (trust me, once you get used to them, Colorful Tabs and FoxyTunes are necessities), I'm loving how quick it is.

So did you download it yesterday and contribute to the big, geeky goal?

Geek Tip: You Might Lose Add-Ons With Firefox 3

This geek tip is coming to you from the school of hard knocks - after downloading the new version of Firefox 3 (currently in Beta) on one of my computers, I was dismayed to find all my add-ons were gone. I know, you're shaking your head and saying "duh!," but I thought I'd let my mistake be a warning to you. A warning will pop up that some add-ons are incompatible and it can check if there are newer compatible versions.

However, this geek got a tip from another geek: If you want to use the new, speedier Firefox 3, you can always download this in addition to your current version, that is, download it to your desktop instead of replacing your current Firefox. And a forewarning: The aesthetics of the new Firefox aren't exactly gorgeous, if you care about that sort of thing.

What to Expect With Firefox 3.1

On Tuesday, Firefox will be releasing its 3.0 "browser that has it all" which is said to include one-click bookmarking, the smart location bar and fast performance. The only major thumbs down rumblings I've heard is that it won't support Google Browser Sync like previous versions of Firefox. If you are a regular user of Browser Sync, there are said to be other sync products that work just as well.

And as for Firefox 3.1 alpha, yes it's almost finished and is set to be available mid-July, there are even more fun features to look forward to. For instance, your download history will be added to places, there will be support for bulk bookmark tagging and tag auto completion and - the lifesaving feature I'm most excited about - a new visual tab switching and tab searching/filtering feature (displayed in the image above).
