Tech Dating 101: Do You Save Messages From Your Date?

One of the benefits of of digital technology is that every email, text, and voicemail is easily saved, stored, and relived. It's helpful when you're dating someone - I think it's both fun and cute to reread old messages. (Though I suppose this can get dicey when trying to cut your ex out of your digital life, but that's a topic for another day). When it's good - it's great!

I hadn't thought too much about it until a recently engaged friend unearthed a years-long log of emails and text messages, starting with the first email her now-fiance sent the morning after they met. My other friends and I teased her at first, but then realized that reading through her saved emails was almost like reading a book of the history of their relationship. Plus, it's fun to look back one month, six months, or even a year into the past to see what was going on, even if they're mundane messages about what movie to catch or what to make for dinner that night.

Besides its historical significance, saving messages from someone you're dating is also helpful when you're starting a new relationship. Who hasn't sat with their girlfriends and gadgets and analyzed a string of text messages from a new guy or potential date? (See also my advice on decoding postdate texts and instant messages).

Do you save these bits of communication when you're starting a new relationship? What about when you're in an established one? And do you ever go back to reread them? I've started doing it, and I must admit, looking back on emails or text messages from a few months before is both nostalgic and sweet.

Tech Dating 101: Is It Shady That He Won't Do Loopt?

Today's Tech Dating 101 centers around location-based services like Loopt and Google Latitude. As cool as these services are, some people are a little creeped out by having people know where they are at all times - even though, of course, you choose to share your location and can choose who you're friends with.

It seems like it would be a great idea for couples - you'd always know where the other one is. It sounds convenient and safe.

However, not everyone is comfortable sending his or her location out and feeling "tracked" - not even when the only person who'd be updated is your significant other.

But if one person in the relationship wants to use Loopt, but the other person doesn't - is there reason to be suspicious?

If your boyfriend or girlfriend doesn't want to do Loopt, it's probably not a red flag. Even if you're comfortable with technology - as I am - you may just not want to participate. I feel this way, personally; my boyfriend loves Loopt and Latitude, but I can't bring myself to do it.

Of course, I reject everyone's Loopt invitations because I do like people finding out where I am the old-fashioned way. When I tell them directly. I'm not untrustworthy, and I wouldn't think that anyone who didn't want to do Loopt was, either.

Geek Out: Would You Use GPS to Keep Tabs on Your Partner?

Well here's a bummer use for GPS: NFL Player Michael Strahan installed a GPS device in girlfriend Nicole Murphy's car, which then text-messaged him her location. Seem a little controlling? Apparently he had reason to be suspicious, because she was cheating on him.

With all the GPS-based devices and cell phones available to us now, along with the willingness of people to participate in up-to-the-minute personal status updates, it's not hard to know what your significant other is doing at all times. In fact, if you have a well-connected partner, an error or lack of updates could tip you off that something's amiss without you even trying to keep track of them. However, I've asked before if you've spied on your S.O. and shown you new tech to spy with - but have you or would you use GPS in any way to find where your partner was?

Maybe Chris Noth was right - maybe technology is hurting our chances of finding true love. It's definitely hurting a girl's reputation, as Curbed SF found with this San Francisco-based telephone-pole plasterer. She felt the need to tell her potential dates a new don't:

"Don't blog about me!"

With everyone and her mother starting her own blog these days, I've got to back a girlfriend up and warn others that in the art of personal blogging, please, keep the date-blasting to a minimum. It'll come back and haunt somebody. Maybe even on a telephone pole in your town.

I have to borrow a heading from sister site FabSugar to bring you a very special tribute to the man behind the Macs, the iPod idol, the eminence of Apple: Steve Jobs. From his iPhone SDK press conference yesterday, the man held court in a style we've come to expect - Jobs' consistency asserts itself in his flair for quiet drama, his dynamic intros and outros, and of course: His mock turtleneck.The mock turtleneck is Steve's unwavering companion: Black, tucked-in, and the sleeves pushed up by a man who needs to get down to business either onstage or behind his newest gadget baby. It's basic, like the design of Apple products - black, like the chicness of Apple products - and utilitarian, like Apple products (how many hickies must that sly fox be covering up with the mock neck? Which is, incidentally, the one thing I haven't seen an Apple product do, but it is only 2008). Facebook Users Outed!

Facebook's news feed feature can be quite revealing to say the least. Where else can you find your ex boyfriend, his new girlfriend and her friends and find out exactly where they've been vacationing and who they have been talking to? There's MySpace, but that opens a whole other creepy can of worms. When our friends over at Switched listed some fun facts about Facebook users, I decided I had to share them with you. And by the way, I am totally not surprised by these stats, as I'm guilty of having a few Facebook laugh sessions myself.

Over sixty percent of guys and girls use Facebook to check up on their ex.
Fifteen percent of guys have used Facebook as a means to "pleasure themselves," whereas only one percent of women admitted to this act. (Use your imagination.)
A large percentage of both girls and guys said that they've sat around with friends making fun of people on Facebook.
Almost half of all users revealed that they've been boozin' a few times while using Facebook.
